From the Pastor’s Desk

September has been a busy month here at Grace Good Shepherd Church! After Labor Day, we had our annual Corn Feed, showing off our community garden, honoring Stan Schmidt and other volunteers for their hard work, and celebrating the fact that our building loan from the Presbytery was finally paid off.

On September 20th & 21st our church hosted 17 riders from the Presbytery of the Redwoods, organized by the Hunger Task Force of the Presbyterian Church, USA. The riders were traveling from Crescent City to Sausalito, 420 miles over 7 days. Called “Pedal 4 Protein”, the event raised $30,000 for North Coast regional food banks and local food pantries, including those impacted by the recent Valley Fire. Our own Deacons challenged the congregation with matching funds up to $500, and true to the generous nature of our church, we were able to present the group with a check for $1,072!

Not only did the riders stay overnight at various members’ homes, we also provided them with a potluck fish fry Sunday evening—complete with beer, wine and a bit of guitar music! Many thanks to Chris and Gene Callahan for coordinating this event, Al & Shirley Bird, John & Barbara Brimlow and others who provided food for both our evening meal and the continental breakfast before the riders took off Monday morning! What was especially meaningful for me when the riders were here, was the morning devotion led by Executive Presbyter, Bob Conover when he reminded us that the Hebrew word for breath: ruah is the same word for spirit; so is the Greek word pneuma and the Latin, spiritus—the same word signifying both spirit and breath. This is why in many Eastern religious traditions how we breathe is so essential in meditation. We are literally breathing in the spirit of God!

This past weekend I participated in an interfaith panel on the “Role of Religion in Systemic Change in our Society – Particularly Regarding Economic Injustice”. The panel was part of the Tiny House Expo held at the Humboldt UU Fellowship, and we discussed the ways in which our various faith traditions have responded and continue to respond to issues surrounding homelessness.

People are struggling all over: whether homeless due to poverty or fires, refugees from war torn Syria or immigrants from Mexico—everyone desires shelter, a living wage and a better life for their families. As people of faith, we share our abundance in so many ways-- Lynn and I continue to be amazed by this congregation’s hospitality and generosity.

More events for October: our own Geoff Werronen will be drawing for the Pastels on the Plaza event this Saturday, October 3rd. Our congregation will be hosting McKinleyville Arts Night on October 16th, featuring senior Hannia Sánchez-Madriz, and other high school artists, please join us in celebrating their work!

Session Update

A special congregational meeting of Grace Good Shepherd church was held on September 27, 2015 to present new terms for the 2015 Pastoral Call. At the time of the initial call of our Pastors the Reverend Dr. Lynn Hubbard and Reverend Deborah Hubbard in November of 2016, the Congregation and the Session both indicated that when the financial position of the church improved we would revisit the terms of the call. The financial position of the church has changed and the session passed a resolution to restructure the call to one full time position that would provide a 1/2 time call for each of our Pastors. This 28% increase in the call was to be retroactive to January 1, 2015. The meeting was called to order by Session Moderator Pastor Hubbard with prayer and she then left the meeting to allow discussion of the matter at hand. This restructured call was presented to the congregation by Elder David Kitchen, chair of the PNC, during the special meeting and it was moved and seconded to accept the terms as presented at the meeting. The motion was passed unanimously with a joyful acclimation by the Session!

Deacons Corner

The GGS Deacons have begun applying for grants and collecting donations in support of the 2015 Christmas Food Gift Card project. For the past two years, the Deacons distributed gift cards valued at over $6,000. We hope to sustain this record this year. GGS members and

friends are welcomed to make donations to the project. If a check is written to GGS for this purpose, please write Deacons' Christmas Gift Cards on the memo line.

Exploring the New Testament New Testament 101

Whether people consider it a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings that the world has ever known. Yet the New Testament is also

among the most widely disputed and least understood books in history. This seminar will be a challenging and fascinating reflection on the world of the early Judaism and the emerging

Christian community.

Each of the Gospels will be explored along with the writings of Paul. The course will end with an exploration of the book of Revelations. It will require watching two 30 minute videos each week

in preparation for the sessions. The sessions will last approximately one hour and the cost for the materials will be $50.00, including 24 videos and a guide book for discussion.

This will open to the community and will require at least ten participants. So, encourage your

friends to join us.

We will begin our study in Epiphany and conclude by Holy Week. Please speak to Lynn of your interest, ASAP.

“Inside Islam- A sweeping story of one of the world’s great faiths”

“It is the second largest of the world’s great religions, and the fastest growing. Its name comes from the word for peace, yet to many Westerners, it is synonymous with terror. This is an illuminating, important, and objective documentary on Islam, which exposes the heart of a faith mired in controversy.”

Please join us on Saturday, October 31, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. for the first in a series of discussions on topics of religion and contemporary culture.

Followed by an adult Halloween wine and cheese party.

The discussion will be led by Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard

Lindquist Memorial Bench Rick Botzler discovered that there now is a memorial bench with a lovely inscription dedicated to Dean and Pauline Lindquist by their children. The bench is at a place along the curve of the trail up toward Widow White Creek. Attached are a few photos Rick took of the bench and inscription. Rev. Lindquist was the pastor who joined Grace Lutheran Church and Good Shepherd Presbyterian to create one congregation--Grace Good Shepherd Church!
