JUNIOR CO-ORDINATORS REPORT

What a great year the Monbulk Juniors had in season 2014/15. In many ways it was one of our most successful. We fielded 7 junior teams and had over 100 kids participate in our Milo in2Cricket program. But the highlight for me wasn’t the amount of kids we have playing cricket it’s the amount of quality kids, with great parents, who play cricket with exceptional sportsmanship and effort. This is the culture of the MCC that has been built up over many years. The following email is one I received from an umpire from one of our U15 games. I was really proud of Tom and the U15’s, but this email also sums up our whole club I believe: ……………….Hi Steven, In today's society people are sometimes quick to criticise and complain, especially when it involves our youth. I want to do the opposite. Last night I umpired a game involving your u15(2)'s in a 20/20 game. These are my reflections. While batting every batsman offered support and encouragement to the striker virtually every ball. Every defensive shot was met with a "Well played" etc and every scoring shot was met with "Great shot", "Well done" etc. Even near misses brought about a "Don't worry, you're still here." This was maintained throughout the batting innings. When it came to bowl/field the same pattern of encouragement and support occurred. All good balls were acknowledged and even after a not so good delivery/fielding error your players still shouted words of encouragement. This was in contrast to their opposition while they were bowling. A point I highlighted to their coach. After an opposition player was hit by a full toss players from MCC continued to ask about his welfare showing a genuine concern. To see the MCC u15 players play so enthusiastically and visibly and audibly enjoy the game of cricket and each other was wonderful. As a teacher and having being involved in sport a long time I have witnessed some inappropriate behaviour, etc when sport is involved. The MCC players last night exemplified sportsmanship at many levels. Although I spoke to Tom about this last night, I felt you, as Junior Co-Ordinator should be aware. It is apparent he has led this team well and instilled in them a sense of fairness and enjoyment. Credit must also go to the parents of these boys who reinforce these positive values. MCC has a wonderful culture and if the efforts and behaviour of these boys are any indication I'm confident it will remain so. Well done…………….. Our U17’s just missed the finals this year, but nearly all of the boys played in our senior teams throughout the season. With the junior age groups changing next season, this was the last season of juniors for most of these boys. Congratulations to these boys on their junior careers and we look forward to them continuing to play seniors next season and for years to come. Our seven junior teams were once again very lucky to be coached by seven senior payers from our club, four of which have no kids themselves. A massive thanks in particular to these four: Brian Martin, Tom Watson, Duncan Maher and Clayton Spooner. Whilst this coaching set up worked well this season, I don’t think it’s sustainable and we definitely need more dads to take on a coaching role next season or in the future. Please consider this and contact me to discuss. Many thanks to the Team Managers and scorers of all the teams: Carolyn, Bronwyn, David, Kerryn, Al, Bernadette, Fiona, Jo & Max - Your efforts are much appreciated by myself and all of your team I’m sure. Thank You to: Chris Defina and the senior club for their ongoing support of our juniors, Damian Howard for his amazing work with our Milo program this season, and to Bronwyn Badgery for all of her work including organising the successful junior xmas raffle. Finally, thanks again to all families for being apart of the MCC this season, a season when we became the Melbourne Stars ‘Stars Club’ 2014/15 season, further recognition of a very successful season. The $10,000 prize money will also be very handy. Congratulations also to the U13’s for reaching the Grand Final and finishing Runners Up. Have a great winter everyone and hopefully see you all next season. Go Hawks, Steve Utting

Monbulk U17 – 2014 / 2015 – Coach’s Report

It was a challenging year for the Monbulk U17's team this season. After last season making the finals but being bundled out the boys were determined to push themselves this year and go further. This proved too difficult a task this season though with our lack of experience showing with a whole team of first year U17's players. Even the second year players weren't able to play last year as it is the first time we had an U17's team in quite a while which is a great achievement for the club and shows the improvement and positive direction we are taking the club in for the future. The boys were in most games and probably lacked 10% in most games to get the wins. This was probably highlighted with only one score above 50 for the season with a few of the boys making some 30's not out and more. We were a very competitive side led with the ball by Daniel Cleary, Josh Rak and Travis Wills who were able to get early wickets in most games. All of the boys have a big future at the club with some great batting performances this year in the morning and also in the seniors where everyone in the team played a game this season. The boys just missed out on finals this year with a last round loss in the last over sealing their fate. Overall the boys should be very proud of themselves this season. They demonstrated great sportsmanship on the field and showed a high dedication to their training. They at times carried the seniors with their training habits and were always there and ready to go every Tuesday and Thursday. Hopefully next year is a successful year for everyone at Monbulk cricket Club. Brian Martin

U15 2014 / 2015 – Coach’s Report

What a year for the under 15’s of the Monbulk Junior Cricket Club! Moving up to the under 15’s competition with only 1 top age player was always going to result in a challenging year. Coming off a grand final the year before, we boys certainly had the talent but just needed to continue to do the right things at training. We also needed to find a few more players, which we were able to do by welcoming the Buckley boys, Scott and Luke, to the club. We were also lucky to have a steady stream of under 13’s, not only topping up our numbers, but excelling in the age group above theirs. This was particularly vital when we were beset by injuries to several of our players, meaning at times we had 4 under 13’s filling in at one time. The year itself was a mixed bag as we found ourselves in winnable positions many times but lacked the ability to take control of games with a vital wicket or a big batting partnership. The end results show that we finished the season with 2 wins and 8 losses, with the main area for improvement to be found in our attitude on the training track. Too many times in games were we unable to keep the good balls out, or apply dot ball pressure to batting teams. This all comes back to discipline during training to continually practice a solid defence and bowling on the off stump, rather than trying to hit boundaries every ball and bowl off spin, leg spin and medium pace. There were many highlights throughout the season. The steady development of Austin’s technique in both wicket keeping and batting was excellent to see. The all-round abilities of Scott Buckley and Daniel Rak was consistent, with Daniel retiring several times throughout the season, and Scott striking in the 40s twice. Luke Buckley proved to be our most economical bowler, bowling an excellent line and length and picking up consistent wickets. Michael Hill, Tam Noonan and Flynn Trewavis were all hampered by injury throughout the season, but managed to make valuable contributions to the team when they played. Bowling Award: Brendan te Boekhorst – Coming back from a year off, Brendan wasted no time in collecting wickets, picking up a bag of 3 in his 3rd game back. Throughout the season he worked hard in the nets, tweaking his action and working on a consistent line and length. With his height and high release point, he is able to get plenty of bounce and movement with the ball. He finished the season with 10 wickets at an average of 11.6. Great job Brendan Bowling Award: Josh Spencer – The bowling award was shared this year between Brendan and Josh! Josh played in most of the matches this season, often showing up his older teammates with tight lines and a full length with the ball. Josh was never bothered about who he was bowling to or at what stage of the innings he bowled at, he just focussed on dot balls. Josh also finished with 10 wickets with an average of 9.8. Batting Award: Scott Buckley – A new addition to the team, Scott demonstrated the ability to work on his batting, especially his defence. He was able to construct many important innings, often when the game seemed done and dusted. He twice scored in the mid 40’s, easily the highest scores for the team this year. Scott finished with 130 runs at an average of 14.44 with a top score of 46. Coaches Award: Daniel Rak – Mr Reliable of the team, Daniel was able to show that he is clearly committed to improving his skills all the time. One of the team’s best trainers, Daniel was happy to take feedback on board and work on improving consistent batting and bowling skills. He ended up retiring 3 times throughout the season with the bat and was a tight new ball bowler. Coaches Award: Thomas Badgery – As captain, opening batsman and leg spinner Thomas had his cricketing plate full this season! Throughout the season his batting increased immensely, which is a testament to not missing a training and doing extra work away from the main sessions. Thomas shouldered the responsibility of captaincy well, leading the team with confidence and innovation while giving everyone a chance to shine. A final big thank you to the parent helpers we had throughout the year. Simply driving our cricketers to their trainings and games is a great thing and to be there to cheer them on from the sidelines means plenty to them. Thanks to David Richardson who continued to hone his scoring skills in an impeccable manner and to Steve Utting who does an amazing job as not only junior co-ordinator, but as my fellow training manager. Thanks also to Bronwyn Badgery, who without a doubt made my job throughout the season much easier by organising…everything and everyone! Lastly, I would just like to say a word about the role senior cricket has played this year with the boys from the under 15’s. By playing in teams that set high standards and by playing with and against players with vast experience, several of our boys were able challenge their skills. A special mention to Daniel Rak (10 senior games), Thomas Badgery (11 senior games) and Austin Richardson (7 senior games, including 3 as 2’s keeper). Tom Watson

Monbulk U13 – 2014 / 2015 – Coach’s Report I had the privilege of again coaching this terrific group of kids. With the addition of Zac Teese we had a full team of 11 each week. The season started slowly, actually really slowly – we lost our first five games. All loses were against quality teams and we didn’t actually play that bad. The boys continued to train hard, support each other on and off the ground and guess what we didn’t lose another game for the season…..…….until the Grand Final. Over the xmas break, the boys lived in the nets, watched a lot of cricket on TV and came back a different side. These boys love their cricket and their time in the nets no doubt turned them into a much better team. Like anything in life, the more you do something, the more you practise, the more effort you put in, the better you will become and the more rewards you get. Going into the last game we were in 5th position, needing a win against the 3rd team (Upwey) and needing the 4th team to lose to make the finals. Chasing Upwey’s 111 off 20 overs, Ryan DeHaan hit the winning 4 down the ground in the 2nd last over to win a very exciting game. The 4th team lost and we were into the finals. We played top side Johnson Park in the Semi Final, and the boys showed how much they had all improved putting on an amazing team performance winning 131 to 94. In the Grand Final we played a strong Rowville team and after the first night we were behind in the game 5/59 to 2/80. To the boys credit and another sign the teams overall improvement, we managed to bat out our overs making 9/121 thanks largely to Ben Grimes 38*. We then got two early wickets and really made Rowville earn their win passing our score in the 36th over. It was a great experience to play in a Grand Final and the boys put on a great show. Congratulations to all the boys this season and thanks for your efforts. Well done to Campbell Dennison (Bowling Award), Josh Spencer (Batting Award) and Ryan DeHaan and Tyren Utting (Coaches awards) Many thanks to Kerryn Turney for doing a great job Team Managing, scoring and entering the scores onto Mycricket every week. You do a great job and is much appreciated. Thanks to all the parents for your wonderful support (and food) at every game and assistance at trainings. Every Friday night was fun and a great end to the week, especially our home games at Silvan. Thanks also to Tom Watson and the U15’s for sharing our Monday night trainings. I look forward to watching these boys further develop as cricketers next season. Have a great winter everyone. Cheers, Steve Utting

Monbulk U11 Maroon – 2014 / 2015 – Coach’s Report What a fantastic season the under 11 Maroons had! There were up’s and downs, friendships formed and new understandings of the game. The start of the season was all about understanding field positions, bowling accurately and putting value on each and every wicket. The boys rose to the challenge and tried really hard, showing everyone just how much they listened, practiced and improved both in the nets and on the field. Everyone was given the opportunity to bowl, change fielding positons, bat and wicket keep. Our main focus in the early stages, and throughout the season was to concentrate, respect the effort of all teammates and have a positive attitude – regardless of the outcome of their personal and team contributions. The middle of the season saw a shift in these attitudes with the boys starting to understand how to work as part of a team. The improvement in their attitude towards their team mates lead to higher team morale and performance both in the field and with the bat. This was an encouraging sign, and to see how happy they were working together made coaching them highly enjoyable and rewarding. The end of the season showed a vast and continued improvement in their performances, skill level, and understanding of the game. The boys not only understood the game, but also learnt how to have fun! Whether this was cheering each other on for a wicket or two or three…. to really having a good hit and trying to get that elusive “four” or “six”. The boys can feel extremely proud of what they have achieved this season and their commitment to their training has shown that they can accomplish anything they set their mind to. I would like to thank Bernadette Mackay for taking on the thankless role as team manager, making sure everyone knew where they were going for the day and those lovely “mum” reminders of hat and water bottles! Thank you to Philip Roe and Matt Rickard for their dedication to the score book. To Roger Langrish and Paul Stack for helping out with the umpiring, giving me the opportunity to watch and coach from the boundary. Thanks to all the boys for their hard work and dedication, you can feel proud of your achievements, and hope that you all continue on for the next season. Steve Bohun

Monbulk U11 Gold – 2014 / 2015 – Coach’s Report

Once again, September rolled around and brought the some warmer weather and the start of cricket for the Under 11’s. Such was the success of the program last year that we grew from 19 kids to 24 and saw the junior committee decide to create two Under 11 teams with myself and Steve Bohun taking on the responsibility. The boys were as keen as ever to start their training and show off all their new gear that they had received. This year saw the first use of a real leather ball (albeit slightly smaller) and the first few training sessions were dedicated to learning to throw, catch and bowl a much heavier ball. Trainings proved to be a great resource for the kids with several dads and even some older brothers providing much needed guidance and extra eyes. Many of the kids throughout the year started to provide advice to their teammates, showing their love and knowledge of the game. The boys were as confident as ever coming into the start of the season. Some very strong games with the bat, ball and in the field followed and saw us playing very positive cricket with plenty of encouragement. The hard work put in at training was paying dividends as many new personal bests were set for most and technical aspects improved on a weekly basis such as backing up, bat sliding and throwing accuracy. The season ended with us playing Upwey and putting our best team effort together. The kids were trying their all for the other kids out on the field and it was an absolute joy to be a part of. Needing 7 runs off the last 3 overs it was up to Declan and Ben Willoughby to finish the chase that all the boys contributed to. All the parents and kids were as a group on the sidelines cheering on the two batsmen and as we passed Upwey’s score in the last over the celebrations from parents and children alike was wonderful to witness. Hopefully, as next season nears, they take the attitude and teamwork from the last game into next season. I would like to give a big thanks to my Assistant Coach and Team Manager Al Hylton-Stewart for all of his hard work throughout the season. He managed to coordinate all of us, organise new awards and help with umpiring all year and I cannot imagine how much harder the season would have been without his assistance. I’d also like to give a mention to the parents who either watched and encouraged every week or helped with training. Your efforts with driving, feeding and braving the weather allowed the kids and I to have some great times this year and as someone who has come through junior cricket I appreciate the commitments that you have to forego to provide such an experience. To my boys from Under 11 Gold – you have been a pleasure to coach this year and I am glad that you are willing to learn, encourage each other and give it your all at training and on game day. I look forward to coaching many of you in the years to come and I hope that we can continue to improve and have fun doing so. Lastly, to Josh Spencer, Sage Farmer and TJ Utting – thank you very much for your assistance throughout the year boys with all areas of the game. You all really went above and beyond what anyone would expect kids of your age and I’m glad that Monbulk Cricket Club has exceptionally talented and considerate juniors coming through that I’ll get the opportunity to play with in years to come. Until next season – Go Hawks! Duncan Maher

Monbulk U10 Maroon – 2014 / 2015 – Coach’s Report

It’s been a great season in the Under 10’s Maroon team, with each and every player significantly improving not only from ‘season’s start’ to ‘season’s end’, but on a week to week basis. I believe that this was shown towards the end of the year and especially in the last round with the boys getting five run outs and keeping a team to well under 50 runs. As for the batting, the boys showed real skill and patience in not trying to hit every ball to the boundary but instead trying to play the ball on its merits. I am proud to have coached this team and I hope they have lots of success and enjoyment with the Monbulk CC for years to come. Thanks to Jo and Max McIntosh for doing a great job Team Managing and to all of the other parents for their help during the season. Clayton Spooner

U10 Gold – 2014 / 2015 – Coach’s Report

G’day everyone, Well it’s hard to believe that we have just marched through a full season of cricket. For me the season has flown by so quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching a team of great boys who each brought something different to the team. For me it was fantastic that I knew a lot of the boys from last year’s Milo – Bushrangers team and we had a few new faces join the club. Each of the boys made me laugh in lots of different ways, their innocence when it came to cricket was in some ways infectious, just hit the ball as hard as you can and run. The start of the season was very exciting with everyone receiving their new Monbulk Cricket Club Caps and brand new playing shirts. Those club caps drove me nuts at the start, when the boys decided it was easier to catch the ball with them instead of their hands, but we managed to overcome that pretty quickly. Before we knew it, our first game came around pretty quickly, the boys were excited and so were Azza and I. Funny enough I did not know what to expect and it was a real eye opener for me and totally changed my approach when it came to training. Why would they know after you bowl a ball you run back to the stumps to help the run out, why would they know that you walk in when the bowler is running in to bowl, why would they know you run behind another fielder to back up their fielding, there were just so many little things I took for granted that the boys needed to learn which meant for fun times ahead. The first half of the season we just concentrated on playing cricket without pads and helmets, the second half we introduced, pads, helmets and of course boxes. I told the boys to wear two pairs of jocks to games and training to hold their boxes in place, well the giggles and subsequent questions were hilarious and one of my funniest memories of the season. Well I can say by our last game at our MCG, all of our boys were running to the stumps, they encouraged one another superbly, bowling was awesome, we were hitting fours, straight and cover drives, loud calls, backing up and grounding our bats when we were batting. This was all confirmed when a parent from the opposition came to me, shook my hand and congratulated me on how good our boys were, their sportsmanship and behaviour………one of my proudest moments. Well done to Clayton and the Maroon team, we got to train as a total group each week and it was always great to see both teams working out how to go about it together. Thanks for everything Clayton, you’re a good lad. On that note of course you always need help and I was so lucky to have a huge amount of support this year. To my little mate Azza Gillard, you are a champion in my eyes. Azza, is still a junior himself at our club and he gave up every Wednesday and Friday night to coach our team. Azza plays in our Senior second XI as well as well as our juniors and has a bright future at our club. I couldn’t have managed Friday nights without him and can’t thank this young man enough. Fiona our team manager – thank you so much, you always put your hand up to help our community and your efforts this year were greatly appreciated, your communication was awesome, I am crap at it, you worked that out pretty quickly and your organisation was spot on. Matt Ryan………… Matt Ryan…………..Matt Ryan, thanks for everything and stepping up to score and pack up, really appreciate it and thanks for everything. Max, thanks for your help behind the stumps on training nights, we had lots of laughs and those boys did give you a hard time with their throwing, it was good fun though. To all of the other parents and helpers, thank you so much, we always need help and it’s much appreciated. Last but not least, thank you to my wife and my two girls who put up with a lot of last minute calls when I had forgotten something, picking up Azza and just making sure we had everything. It’s time for footy, have fun over the winter and I can’t wait to see everyone back at the club next season. Take care Chris ‘Funky’ Defina

Milo in2Cricket 2014 / 2015

Monbulk Milo has had another very successful season with 106 registered participants but also a bunch of pre Kinder kids joining in the program. The program not only underpins the MCC juniors but the Friday night program is a community event providing the opportunity for parents to socialize and wind down after a long week. With 5 groups and the U10, s in the middle of the ground, Friday night showcases the MCC as a vibrant, welcoming club. The program only runs with the selfless support of our volunteers. In particularly our coaches: John Hughes, Rachelle Roberts, Renae Aron-Dawson, Liam Kelly and Dave Daly. But also to all the parents who helped the coaches with groups. Also to all our parents who helped with the BBQ. Again it adds to our program to provide a meal on a Friday night. Thanks to Cliff Cleary and Al Smith for running the bar. It’s a huge commitment. The feedback from parents, other teams has been extremely positive and I think as a club we can be proud of our standing within our community. Moving forward this can only be positive for our club. Thanks Damian Howard Milo in2cricket co-ordinator
