As a matter of fact, throughout our history God had often chosen the greatest misfits and rogues to lead his people. King David, Moses, St. Paul, Martin Luther, were all flawed characters, filled with the many excesses which often go hand in hand with a passionate love. Perhaps the lesson to be learned is that those who love God passionately are often those who have most deeply experienced God’s unconditional love. Or as Jesus taught us, those who love God the most are those to whom God has cancelled the greater debt. During Lent, we realize once again, that Jesus was not just a sweet, loving and kind m an. He was filled with th e passion of one who loved God without condition. He called it like he saw it. He insulted people, o ffended them, and to ok a whip to those who desecrated the house of his father. And all this to teach us how to love God with passion, and to risk the conflicts which will inevitably occur when the unconditional love of God meets the passionate longings of God’s people. These are the teachings of Jesus: that we love God with all our heart soul, and mind. Following these teachings cost Jesus his life, so may we ever honor these teachings with the reverence and deep passion of those who follow in his “Way.” May our future together be lived in the humility of Christ, and in acceptance of the gre at adventure given to those who follow in the compassion and mindfulness of his cross. A Passionate Love

We Christians often speak of the unconditional love of God, and

by that we mean that there is nothing that can separate us

from Gods love. As a matter of fact, throughout our history

God had often chosen the greatest misfits and rogues to lead

his people. King David, Moses, St. Paul, Martin Luther, were all

flawed characters, filled with the many excesses which often go

hand in hand with a passionate love.

Perhaps the lesson to be learned is that those who love God

passionately are often those who have most deeply

experienced Gods unconditional love. Or as Jesus taught us,

those who love God the most are those to whom God has

    cancelled the greater debt.

During Lent, we realize once again, that Jesus was not just a

sweet, loving and kind man. He was filled with the passion of

one who loved God without condition. He called it like he saw

it. He insulted people, offended them, and took a whip to

those who desecrated the house of his father. And all this to

teach us how to love God with passion, and to risk the conflicts

which will inevitably occur when the unconditional love of God

meets the passionate longings of Gods people.

These are the teachings of Jesus: that we love God with all our heart

soul, and mind. Following these teachings cost Jesus his life, so may

we ever honor these teachings with the reverence and deep passion

of those who follow in his Way.

May our future together be lived in the humility of Christ, and in

acceptance of the great adventure given to those who follow in the

compassion and mindfulness of his cross. Pastor Lynn Hubbard

    Quotes for Reflection

The Artists Creed I believe that I am worth the time it takes to create, and that my work is worthy of its own space which is worthy of the name sacred. I believe that the time I spend creating art is as precious as the time I spend giving to others. Jan Phillips

On Worship The worship of God is not a rule of safety it is an adventure of the spirit, a flight after the unattainable. The death of religion comes with the repression of the high hope of adventure. Alfred North Whitehead

On Other Religions The fact is, Christians must permit the right for other people that they have claimed for themselves. God was as present among the tribes of Africa as god was present among the tribes of America, as God was present among the tribes of Israel. Consequently, we must be cautious about saying that God was unique to any one people; God was in a special relationship to different tribes or in a particular relationship with them, but never in an exclusive relationship that shut out the rest of humanity. Bishop Steve Charleston

Metaphors and Facts half the people in the world think that the metaphors of their religious traditions are facts. And the other half contends that they are not facts at all. As a result we have people who consider themselves believers because they accept metaphors as facts, and we have others who classify themselves as atheists because they think religious metaphors are lies. Joseph Campbell

Luther on Temptation Whenever the devil harasses you, seek the company of men or drink more, or joke and talk nonsense, or do some other merry thing. Sometimes we must drink more, sport, recreate ourselves, and even sin a little to spite the devil, so that we leave him no place for troubling our consciences with trifles. We are conquered if we try too conscientiously not to sin at all. So when the devil says to you: do not drink, answer him: I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to. Martin Luther
