SEAS - Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis
About the SeAS ApproAch:The principles of SEAS are based on a specific form of auto-correction (termed active self-correction), that is taught individually
to each single patient, and then associated with stabilising exercises that include neuromotor control, proprioceptive training
and balance. The exercises are also incorporated into daily living activities. SEAS approach is also characterised by a cognitive-
behavioural approach towards the patient and his family to maximise compliance to treatment. The aim with SEAS exercises is
to avoid or at least postpone bracing, and to arrive at the end of growth with a presumably stable curvature. When a brace has
already been prescribed, exercises are mandatory in order to avoid all side effects of bracing, to increase its function, and to
allow the spine to be stable during the weaning period and when the brace is discontinued.

ABOUT THE FACULTY
WHY SHOULD YOU ADOPT THE SEAS APPROACH?
• Evidence of efficacy in literature (see https://en.isico.it/research/scientific-papers).
• No specific expensive devices are needed.
• Free Software Access via internet (ScoliosisManager http://www.scoliosismanager.it/). In this course you’ll learn how to
use the software and, most importantly, how to choose and adapt exercises basing on individual needs of the patient.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
• Understand background of SEAS approach and the underlying scientific principles.
• How to perform the clinical and postural evaluation of the scoliosis patient.
• Understand what three-dimensional self-correction is, and the step-by-step approach to teach individualised self-
correction to the patient.
• Learn how self-correction is performed for different types of deformities: thoracic, thoracolumbar, lumbar, double curve,
hyperkyphosis; correlation with the radiographic and postural evaluation, as well as on observed asymmetries.
• Learn how to manage the cognitive-behavioural approach to patient and family.
• Understand the role of exercises within the SEAS approach, and the criteria used to choose them for an individualised
treatment plan.
• Goals of exercises in the different treatment phases: no brace, brace, adult.
