katherineperezSOUTHERN APPEALED TO ME because of
the many research opportunities in
the Physics Department, specifically
the Industry Academic Fellowship
Program. This program allows
students to conduct summer-long
research with industry professionals,
including exposure to the business-
related aspects of technology.
Being involved in this program has
been amazing. I have learned so
much about electron microscopy
studies. My research will continue
into the fall semester and will be
presented at several conferences.
Through the Industry Academic
Fellowship I am gaining the
necessary research skills to work
professionally. Southern offers many
opportunities for students to prepare
themselves for the real world.

SOUTHERN HAS A EXCELLENT REPUTATION
for my major, Communication
Disorder: Speech Pathology.
I also loved the vibe of Southern’s
campus when I toured here.
Everyone was friendly and made
me feel welcome. Having lived on
campus for the past two years,
I can tell you that feeling is
genuine and ever-present!
I have had many leadership roles
already in my two years at
Southern. I have been an
orientation ambassador, am
active in student government as a
representative-at-large and board
chair, and am an officer for the
Best Buddies organization.
One of my life goals is to open
my own speech pathology practice.
The many leadership and
interpersonal skills that I have
gained here at Southern will
obviously benefit my future career.
I have learned how to manage
difficult tasks and work with large
groups of people. I am grateful for
the many doors that Southern has
opened for me as I begin to picture
my life after graduation.

I KNEW THAT SOUTHERN’S DEDICATION TO
SOCIAL JUSTICE AND COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT made it the perfect
place to learn how to give back to
the city that raised me. The diversity
of backgrounds and programs on
campus makes Southern the ideal
place for learning about the needs
of different communities.
The Day of Service, The Big Event,
and The Charter for Compassion
are just a few of the remarkable
community service activities that
I have had the honor of
participating in at Southern.
All three of these service-oriented
events focus on engaging the
campus with the community
through aiding its schools,
shelters, and the environment.
Community service has introduced
me to a variety of fields, from
education to community organizing.
These experiences have helped me
immensely in figuring out where
I can best utilize my skills after
graduation.

I CHOSE TO STUDY ABROAD BECAUSE
I wanted to learn another language,
finish my degree, and play soccer.
Universities in America offer a great
opportunity for athletes to compete
and get an education, something
really difficult to find in Europe.
Southern offers a great Human
Performance program in the
exercise science field. After talking
to the women’s soccer head coach,
I realized that Southern was the
school I was looking for. There are
a lot of activities on campus to help
the students feel at home.
Studying in a different country offers
new ways to face the world and
provides you with contacts in many
fields that you can use once you
graduate. Also, once you go back
home you feel ready for new
challenges in your life because of
the experience of living abroad. It
feels like nothing can stop you from
being the person you want to be
and living the life you want to live!

I PARTICIPATED IN AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG
with two other Southern
undergrads. We worked on the
Gona Paleoanthropological
Research Project in Afar, Ethiopia.
We learned about all aspects of
archaeology, from working in the
Ethiopian National Museum to
collecting fossils and artifacts from
sites we had read about. It is not
just any internship where one gets
to find and hold stone tools over
two million years old!
My internship took me to a place
I would never have seen, and it
taught me a lot about the world.
I learned how to dig without
destroying what I was trying to
excavate. I learned the most
efficient way to catalogue in the
field. I learned that archaeology is
a physically demanding profession.
And I learned from living among
the local Afar people that it is
possible to communicate when you
don’t speak the same language.
If I untimately decide on a career
in archaeology I now know what
to expect. I have to thank Southern
for that.
