Bianca Cole outlines two special resources to look out for this issue

In this issue we are asking you to help us find out what young people think

about the programme.

This is the first time we have attempted a project of this kind since the launch

of this programme and we are grateful to anyone who is able to help. Please use

the four-page pull-outs to perform the activities, record the results

and send it back to us.

The results of this will take some time to collate and will be published

next year.

Sporting and ScoutingYou will also notice a special supplement of exciting activity ideas to support

Our Sporting Adventure. This is a Scouting competition designed to get young

people across the UK inspired by values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The competition runs from January to September next year so there is plenty

of time for everyone to get involved. Even if you don’t want to compete, you

may find some fun and exciting programme ideas that you would like to try out.

Scouts storiesOf course, that is not all that is going on in the Scouts world. We are, as always,

eager to hear your ideas, experiences and stories. Send them to us at

News and updatesThe golden girlA Birmingham Sea Scout has

made history by becoming the

first girl in the history of her

Scout Troop to achieve the

Chief Scout’s Gold Award.

The feats of 12-year-old

Jennifer are even more

impressive as she has

dyslexia and dyspraxia.

‘To me, winning this

award is no big deal and I don`t

know what the fuss is about because I

was just having fun with my friends,’ said

the heroic achiever.

Jennifer received her award alongside

other recipients from the All Saints Sea

Scouts Group; Oliver, Rohan, Tom and

William. Do you have a Scout in your

Troop who has achieved something

special? If so, we’d like to hear

all about it and

Spreading the fire safety message

Adventure Challenge

Since its launch in 2004, more than 84,000 Scouts have been awarded the Fire Safety Activity Badge sponsored by Chubb

Take your Scouts on extreme adventures with the best-loved action brands in young person’s literature

As part of its badge sponsorship, Chubb offers live fire

demonstrations across the UK. This gives Scouts the

opportunity to use fire extinguishers and fire blankets

on a live fire in a controlled environment and spread

the important message of fire safety.

Earlier this year, Shoreham Fire & Rescue Service and Chubb

played host to over 60 Scouts completing their Fire Safety Activity

Badge. Meanwhile, over 80 Scouts participated in a live fire

demonstration from Chubb Fire Training Officer Andy

Hicks at Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Station in order

to complete their Fire Safety badge. The final live

demonstration day is due to be held in Leeds

on 27 October. For further details visit

www.chubb.co.uk and go to the

News & Resources page.

For all the best of the Adventure Challenge

sponsored by Puffin, visit www.scouts.org.uk/

puffin and download your activity cards and wall

chart, share the adrenaline-pumping

introductory video from Chris Bradford with your Troop

and discuss what epic adventures they are planning.

The new Wimpy Kid is comingGet ready for the biggest children’s

book of the year. Cabin Fever, the sixth

book in Jeff Kinney’s bestselling Diary

of Wimpy Kid series, sees the Heffley

family stuck indoors during a blizzard.

But will they weather the storm? Find out on November

16. In the meantime, visit www.wimpykidclub.co.uk to

download a pack stuffed with activities for you to share

with your Scouts.

Percy Jackson is backThe wait for the next Rick Riordan

blockbuster is over with The Son of Neptune available from 4 October . And

the excitement doesn’t stop there; this is

the long-awaited book in which Percy

Jackson returns. Visit www.

rickriordanmythmaster.co.uk for all the

latest news and fun for Scouts of all ages.

CompetitionThe annual fire safety competition is inviting Scouts to produce a Home Escape plan poster that details the priority actions in the event of a fire. A Home Escape plan is a vital part of every household’s fire safety. Both the Fire Service and Chubb recommend that all homes have two exit routes as part of their Home Escape plan. This competition reinforces that crucial safety message.

For further details, visit www.chubb.co.uk and go to the News & Resources page.

Make sense of moneyThe Scout Association and NatWest have launched a brand new series of activity packs to teach Scouts all about money management

F ive different activity

packs have been

produced for Scouts,

with detailed

accompanying resources for

leaders. Each pack covers a

specific area of looking after

money and is full of exciting ideas

to help your Scouts learn about

managing their own finances both

now and in the future.

There are also lots of Scouting-

specific activities to give young

people a taste of what it’s like to

organise a camp, run a fundraising

campaign or be a treasurer.

THE PACKS ARE:• Money and your life• Staying on budget• Bringing the fun into fundraising• Running your own event• Running your own business

Fun and financeAs well as teaching your Scouts important life skills, some of the things you’ll cover in the packs can also count towards badges and challenges. Some of the fun activities can be done in your meeting place, while others will give you the opportunity to get out and about.

In addition to the activity packs, NatWest has also produced various online tools to help Scouts and leaders alike with their finances, including a budgeting tool that you could use for planning camps and events.

Visit www.scouts.org.uk/natwest to download your pack today.

With your help this year, Sainsbury’s Active Kids has donated thousands of pieces of sport, cooking and outdoor equipment to over 4,000 Scout Groups.

And as long as you keep collecting the vouchers, we’ll keep supporting your Group.

For more information, and to keep up to date with all things Active Kids, please visit sainsburys.co.uk/activekids
