The final year incorporates an experiential learningelement. This allows you to spend a period of time in employment within an external organisationallied to forensic science, providing you withvaluable work experience. The course culminates in a project/dissertation, which brings togetherprevious study modules into a major piece ofevidence-based, academic work. During the courseyou will visit external agencies, including forensiclaboratories, courts of law and mortuaries.

Entry requirements 220-240 UCAS points or equivalent qualifications,which would normally include at least one sciencesubject (biology, chemistry, physics or humanbiology) plus GCSE grade A*–C in English languageand Mathematics subjects or equivalent.

Without a science subject at Level 3 you will beexpected to hold GCSE Double Science at grade C or above or Access to HE Diploma with a minimumof 60 credits, 45 at Level 3 and 15 at Level 2.Access to HE must contain Level 2 Numeracy andLiteracy or the applicants must hold GCSE grade A*–C in English language and Mathematics.

Course overviewThe technological advances in crime detectionrequire the creation of highly trained forensicscientists and this course has been designed tomeet this need. The course is highly multidisciplinaryin nature, encompassing aspects of science,psychology and the law. Consequently, the courseincorporates a wide range of topics, including:anatomy, physiology, scientific analytical methods,criminal psychology, law processes, chemistry,pathology, molecular biology and genetics.

The course initially provides a thorough grounding in forensic science, incorporatingbiological sciences, chemical sciences, the process of criminal investigation, as well as a consideration of the judicial system within the UK. The course builds upon this introductionthrough the study of a range of modules including:pathology, research methods, psychology, scientificanalytical methods, pharmacology, the psychologyof crime, and a detailed investigation of forensicexamination techniques.

All of the science modules within our forensic science courses containa large proportion of practical laboratory work. The laboratory workcomplements the lecture material, so that you are able to relatetheoretical scientific principles to practice.
