The Andrew J. Savage Scholarship was created in 1997 by Mr. Savage to provide financial assistance to deserving students. Mr. Savage is a 1975 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is to be awarded on the basis of financial need.



Annabell B. Brown Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 1991 by Timothy L. Brown in honor of his mother, Annabell B. Brown. Mr. Brown is a 1976 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a student whose parent has been killed in the line of duty in a war zone or in a combat situation, and who demonstrates academic merit and financial need. Preference is given to residents of South Carolina.

Anne D. and James B. Morrison Law Scholarship Fund

The Morrison Scholarship created in 1982 by Anne D. and James B. Morrison. Mr. Morrison was a 1932 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student who demonstrates financial need, and who has resided in the 15th Judicial Circuit (Georgetown County) for at least two years. In the event there is no applicant who meets these criteria, the Scholarship Committee may use its discretion in awarding the scholarship.



Billy C. Coleman Scholarship Endowment

The Billy C. Coleman Scholarship was created in September 2009 by Richard J. Breibart, to honor his mentor, Billy C. Coleman, a 1938 graduate of the School of Law, who practiced law in Saluda and Lexington County for 69 years, until his retirement in 2007. The Scholarship is awarded to a South Carolina resident, with preference given to someone intending to practice in the State of South Carolina and who has financial need, with special interest in students who are first generation college graduates.



Brailsford-Rosen Scholarship in Law

The Brailsford-Rosen Scholarship was created in 1984 by the Orangeburg County Bar Association, represented by Robert R. Horger, Esq. Louis Rosen received his law degree in 1934. He practiced law for a number of years, then in 1962 was elected to the Circuit Court, where he served until his retirement in 1979. He died in 1989. James Brailsford, Jr. received his law degree in 1964 and retired in 1974 as an Associate Justice of the SC Supreme Court. He died in 1993. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit and financial need to a South Carolina resident.



Caplin-Hubbard Endowed Scholarship Fund

The scholarship was created in September 2012 by Mortimer M. Caplin, a highly-respected lawyer and educator, and founder of Caplin & Drysdale.

The scholarship(s) will be awarded by the School of Law Scholarship Committee to entering law students who have shown a capacity for and interest in public leadership.

Carl W. Littlejohn Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 2000 by the Gregg-Graniteville Foundation in honor of Carl W. Littlejohn, a 1953 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student with demonstrated financial need.



Carolina Legal Scholars

The School of Law established the Carolina Legal Scholars Program in the Fall of 1987. This merit scholarship program was created to encourage academically gifted students to matriculate to the University of South Carolina School of Law, to enhance academic achievement in the School of Law, and to assist law firms in the state in their effort to recruit and hire our most highly qualified students and graduates.



Charles Bell Elliott Scholarship

The Charles Bell Elliott Scholarship was created in 1975 by Mrs. Charles B. Elliott, wife of Mr. Charles Bell Elliott, in memory of her husband. The Scholarship is awarded to a worthy law student on the basis of financial need.



Charles E. Simons, Jr. Law Scholarship

The Simons Scholarship created in 1983 by The Honorable Charles E. Simons, Jr., of Aiken, South Carolina. Mr. Simons was a 1939 graduate of the School of Law. Judge Simons, who served thirty-five years as judge of the United States District Court, died in 1999. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit.



Charles Lee Allen, II Scholarship Fund

The scholarship(s) will be awarded by the University of South Carolina School of Law Selection Committee to deserving law student(s). Recipients must be certified as disabled byt the University's Office of Disability Services.






Charlton Horger Fund

The Charlton Horger Fund was created in 1999 to provide a scholarship in honor of Charlton B. Horger of Orangeburg, South Carolina, a 1938 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded with preference to students from the First Judicial Circuit of Orangeburg, Calhoun, or Dorchester counties, who exhibit academic merit and a noble work ethic.



Class of 1973 Scholarship

The Class of 1973 Scholarship was created by the Law Class of 1973 in honor of their 25th class reunion. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit.



Class of 1975 Moot Court Team Endowment

The purpose of this Fund is to provide support for The University of South Carolina School of Law Moot Court Team Endowment established by the School of Law Class of 1975. The Moot Court Program (1) aids students in achieving excellence in legal research and writing as well as appellate advocacy; (2) administers intramural apellate advocacy competitions including the annual J. Woodrow Lewis Competition; and (3) selects, promotes, and prepares student teams to represent the USC School of Law in extramural appellate advocacy competitions.

Class of 1978 Scholarship

The Class of 1978 Scholarship was created in September 2003 by members of the Class of 1978 in honor of their 25th class reunion. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit.






Coleman Karesh Fund

The Coleman Karesh Scholarship was created in 1977 by a group of University of South Carolina alumni and friends of Coleman Karesh, in order to preserve Mr. Karesh's research notes. Coleman Karesh was a graduate of the School of Law and served as Professor of Law from 1937-1972.



Daniel R. McLeod Law Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 1982 by the Deputy Attorney General, Karen L. Henderson, John B. “Jack” Bryan, III and other committee members to honor retired Senior Attorney General, Daniel R. McLeod. Mr. McLeod was a 1948 law graduate of the School of Law. Mr. McLeod was elected Attorney General of South Carolina in 1958; re-elected five times and served for 24 years from 1959 until his retirement in 1983 as the Senior Attorney General in the United States. He was presented the Wyman Award in 1968 at the Nation’s most outstanding Attorney General by the National Association of Attorneys General.

This scholarship is awarded to deserving law students enrolled in the School of Law.



David Anthony Kusa Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship created in December 2006 by Joseph and Marie Kusa, parents of David A. Kusa, and by Kristina Kusa, widow of David A. Kusa. David Kusa, a member of the Law Class of 2005, died tragically in May 2005. The Scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and financial need.



David H. Means Scholarship Fund

The David H. Means Scholarship created in October of 1987 by Mrs. Frances K.B. Means in memory of her husband, David H. Means, Professor of Law at the USC School of Law from 1949 to 1977. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit to a student in the top 50% of the class.






Dennis R. Nolan Scholarship Endowment

This scholarship was created in July 2006 to honor Dennis R. Nolan, Professor of Law at the University of South Carolina School of Law from 1974-2008. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit.



Dewitt Pate Jacobs Scholarship Fund

The annual distribution from the Donor shall be awarded in its entirety. Decisions shall be based on merit and financial need by the School of Law Selection Committee. As part of their scholarship awards, recipients are required to write appreciation letters to the Donor. These letters must be submitted to the attention of the W. Rudolph and Helen Carter Foundation, BB&T Vice President for Wealth Management, P. O. Box 1465, Wilson, NC 27894-1465.



Edward P. Perrin Scholarship

The Edward P. Perrin Scholarship was created in February 2007 by Anne Porcher Z. Perrin in honor of her husband, Edward P. Perrin, a 1950 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student with outstanding academic credentials who exhibits the personal traits of honesty, integrity, leadership and civic-mindedness. Preference will be given to a South Carolina resident who will be likely to practice law in this state, to give back to the community and for whom the scholarship will make a significant contribution to the ability to attend law school.



Ella Reese Page Scholarship Fund

The Ella Reese Page Scholarship was created in August 2007 by her mother, Mrs. O. Faye Page and her sister, Mrs. Ouida Page Valdez, andby friends and family of Ella Reese Page, who died in 2000. Ms. Page was a 1986 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who is certified as disabled by the University of South Carolina Office of Disability Services






Emil W. Wald Endowed Scholarship Fund

Emory M. Sneeden Scholarship Fund

The Emory M. Sneeden Scholarship was created in January 1989 by friends of Emory M. Sneeden, represented by the late Governor Robert E. McNair. Mr. Sneeden worked for many years with Gov. McNair at the McNair Law Firm, and was also an associate dean and lecturer at the University of South Carolina School of Law. From 1984-1986, Mr. Sneeden served as Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Mr. Sneeden died in 1987. The Scholarship is awarded to a South Carolina resident who demonstrates academic excellence.



Ford-Coleman Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Ford-Coleman Scholarship was created in June 2005 to honor the donor's mother, Mamie Ford Coleman, and in memory of her father, Curtis Everett Coleman. Mamie Ford Coleman worked at the South Carolina Tax Commission for more than twenty-seven years. The late Mr. Coleman received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1947, and his law degree from the University in 1948. Mr. Coleman worked at the Internal Revenue Service for more than 24 years and was the recipient of the Albert Gallatin Award, the highest award presented to an employee of the U.S. Treasury Department for outstanding career service. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a student with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, on the basis of academic merit.






FORFEITED SEAT DEPOSIT SCHOLARSHIP

Funds from forfeited seat deposits and an annual contribution from receipts of the Law School Bookstore support scholarships for law students.



Frank Eppes Scholarship Fund

The School of Law Class of 1986 created this scholarship in December 2007 in memory of The Honorable Frank Eppes, who died in August 2002. Judge Eppes was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives while an undergraduate student at USC, and he served in the House from 1949 until 1962, when he was elected judge of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. He served as judge until his retirement in 1985, but he continued to sit by special designation until 2000. Mr. Eppes died in 2002. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student.



Fred Collins Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was created in January 1990 by the late Fred J. Collins, Jr., who died in January of 2006. Mr. Collins wished to establish a scholarship to be awarded based on need and merit. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit and financial need to a first-year student who demonstrates leadership and academic potential..



George D. Haimbaugh, Jr. Endowed Scholarship

This George D. Haimbaugh, Jr. Scholarship was created in November 2009 in his honor and memory by his wife, Katharine D. Haimbaugh. Professor Haimbaugh taught at the University of South Carolina School of Law from 1963 until his retirement in 1987. The Scholarship is awarded to a student, who may hold the scholarship for the three years of law school.






George Savage King Memorial Fund

This scholarship was created in February 1994 by Mr. King’s widow, Harriet W. King, and his daughter, Harriet King Wasserman, and by family and friends in memory of George Savage King. The fund may be used for student scholarships or emergency loans.



Glenn Fund for Trial Advocacy

This scholarship was created in April 1993 by family and friends in memory of United States District Judge J. Lyles Glenn, Jr., and his son, Attorney Terrell L. Glenn Sr. The fund may be used to award student scholarships on the basis of merit, to provide student awards in Trial Advocacy, or to support a lectureship in Trial Advocacy.



H. Dave Whitener, Jr. Scholarship Fund

The scholarship(s) will be awarded by the School of Law's Scholarship Committee to deserving law students.



Harriet McBryde Johnson Scholarship

The Harriet McBryde Johnson Scholarship was created in November 2008 by family and friends in honor and memory of Harriet McBryde Johnson, who died in 2008. Ms. Johnson was a 1985 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, whose career as civil rights lawyer and as a tireless advocate for the rights of the disabled made her a nationally revered attorney and a “titanic figure in state legal history,” according to Jean Toal, Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a worthy law student.



Harry M. Lightsey, Sr. Scholarship

The Harry M. Lightsey, Sr. Scholarship was created in March 1975 by the North Lakes Sertoma Club to honor Harry M. Lightsey Sr.






Hearn Brittain & Martin Scholarship Endowment

The Hearn Brittain & Martin Scholarship was created in March 2002 in honor of the firm. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis on academic excellence and financial need.



Henry W. Kirkland, Sr. Scholarship

This scholarship was created in February 2002 by family and friends of the late Henry W. Kirkland Sr. Mr. Kirkland was a 1953 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.



Herbert W. Hoefer/Jean H. Toal Scholarship

The Herbert W. Hoefer Scholarship was created in 1970 to honor Mr. Hoefer’s close association with the University of South Carolina, as two daughters and one son-in-law graduated from the University. In May 1990, the scholarship was renamed at the request of Mr. Hoefer’s daughter, Christina Hoefer Myers, to include one of his daughters, Jean H. Toal, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina and a 1968 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to an incoming student on the basis of academic potential and financial need and may be renewed for each year of law school.



I.S. Leevy Johnson Scholarship Fund

The I. S. Leevy Johnson Scholarship was created in July 1997 to provide funds for a scholarship. The Scholarship is to be awarded with preference to members of underrepresented groups as part of the School of Law’s effort to increase diversity. Preference shall be given to residents of South Carolina, with special emphasis to students who are involved in extra-curricular activities including but not limited to the University of South Carolina School of Law Black Law Students Association (BLSA).






J. Bratton Davis Endowment Fund

This scholarship was created in October 2002 by friends of The Honorable J. Bratton Davis in honor of his September 2000 retirement from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of South Carolina. Judge Davis, a 1940 graduate of the School of law, died on October 29, 2004. The Scholarship is awarded to a second- or third-year student who demonstrates an interest in bankruptcy law, with consideration to demonstrated financial need.



J.C. Long Law Scholarship

The J. C. Long Law Scholarship was created in January 1983 by Mr. John Charles Long, a 1925 graduate of the School of Law, to provide scholarship assistance to law students. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit.



Jackson Lewis Employment & Labor Law Scholarship Endowment

This scholarship was created in August 2008 by Ashley B. Abel and by the law firm of Jackson Lewis, practicing employment and workplace law throughout the United States. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.



James P. Leventis Memorial Scholarship

The James P. Leventis Memorial Scholarship was created in December 1984 in memory of James P. Leventis by his wife, Toula P. Leventis. The Scholarship is awarded to one or more deserving law students who demonstrate financial need.






James Verner Scholarship in Law

The Verner Scholarship was created in October 1976 by Mrs. James Verner in memory of her late husband, Mr. James Verner. The Scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit.



John Hughes Cooper Scholarship

Scholarship created by the Estate of Margaret Harris Cooper, deceased sister-in-law of Mr. John Hughes Cooper. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need to a student wishing to develop skills in trial and appellate advocacy.



John S. Flynn Scholarship Endowment

The John S. Flynn Scholarship was created in February 1998 in memory of Edith S. and Philip D. Flynn, parents of The Honorable John S. Flynn. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.



John S. Simmons Endowment Scholarship

The Simmons Scholarship was created in December 2003 by John S. Simmons, a member of the Law Class of 1987, to provide support for student scholarships. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need.



Joseph P. McNulty Memorial Scholarship Fund

The scholarship will be awarded by the University of South Carolina School of Law Scholarship Committee to a deserving law student. The scholarship will be presented in the spring at the University of South Carolina Awards Day to a law student who best exhibits the same attributes with which the Honoree was blessed: dedication to their calling, excellence as a student, vision of public service and kindness to fellow students. The recipient will receive 50% of the total award in each of the student's second and third years of law school.






Judge Randall T. Bell Scholarship Fund

This scholarship created July 1998 by friends of the late Judge Randall T. Bell (1945-1994). Judge Bell was a law professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law from 1973-1980. He also served as judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, and later as an Associate Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. The Scholarship is awarded based on academic qualifications and financial need.



Justice G. Dewey Oxner Law Scholarship

The Justice G. Dewey Oxner Scholarship was created November 1999 by his son, Attorney G. Dewey Oxner, Jr., to honor of his father, the late South Carolina Supreme Court Justice G. Dewey Oxner. Justice Oxner, a 1920 graduate of the School of Law, served on the Supreme Court of SC from January 1944 until his death in January 1962. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic excellence.



Justice J.B. Ness Scholarship

The Ness Scholarship was created in November 1980 by the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association in honor of retired South Carolina Supreme Court Justice J. B. Ness. Chief Justice Ness, a 1940 School of Law graduate, served as Chief Justice from 1985-1988. He died in 1991.The Ness Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit to a South Carolina resident..



Karen J. Williams Endowment Fund

The Karen J. Williams Scholarship was created August 2003 by the Law Class of 1980 to honor their classmate, The Honorable Karen J. Williams, who served as Judge on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 1992-2007, and as Chief Judge from 2007 until her retirement in 2009. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit.






Kathryn A. Bockman/Law Class of 2008 Scholarship Fund

The Kathryn A. Bockman/Law Class of 2008 Scholarship was originally created in May 2008 by members of the Law Class of 2008 to provide scholarship support a deserving student. The scholarship was renamed in January 2009 in honor Kathryn A. Bockman, a member of the Law Class of 2008, who died tragically in October 2008. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.



Kevin S. Curry Memorial Fund

The Kevin Curry Scholarship was created in July 1993 by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth M. Curry, the parents of Kevin Curry, and by his friends and classmates. Kevin Curry died in April 1988, just before his graduation from the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a law student who demonstrates financial need, with preference to a student with a medical disability or physical handicap.



Knox L. Haynsworth, Jr. Scholarship

The Knox L. Haynsworth, Jr. Scholarship was created in January 2002 by the law firm once known as Haynsworth Baldwin Johnson & Greaves to honor its founding partner, Knox Haynsworth, Jr. The firm has since merged with the law firm of Ogletree Deakins Nash Smoak & Stewart, which generously continues to provide support for the scholarship. The Scholarship is awarded to a student who plans to practice labor law.



Krista D. Latshaw Fund

The Krista D. Latshaw Scholarship was created in December 2005 by members of the Latshaw Family. Krista D. Latshaw, along with fellow USC School of Law classmates, had expressed a desire to establish a scholarship fund at the School of Law in recognition of and appreciation for the highly valued experiences and education they received as law students. At Krista’s unexpected death in 2003, her family elected to use life insurance proceeds to establish a permanently endowed scholarship at the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded with preference to out-of-state candidates to promote geographical diversity of the student body, and help foster awareness of the School's excellence. Consideration is given to recipients with a demonstrated interest in helping others through significant volunteer activities.






L. Marion and Florence H. Gressette Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was created in December 1985 to honor the former Senator L. Marion Gressette and Florence H. Gressette, parents of Lawrence M. Gressette, Jr. While serving in the South Carolina State Senate in the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. Gressette worked against school desegregation, but in later years he fought to keep Clemson College open when ordered to admit its first black student, worked on passage of a bill marking the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a state holiday, and authored a plan to desegregate the state’s colleges and universities. The Scholarship is awarded based on merit and financial need to a South Carolina resident.



Law Class of 1962 Scholarship

The Law Class of 1962 Scholarship was created in December 2002 by members of the Class of 1962 in honor of their 40th Reunion.



Law Class of 1963/ Charles H. Randall Endowment

This scholarship created in August 2003 by the Law Class of 1963 in honor of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Charles H. Randall, who taught at the School of Law from 1954 until his retirement in the 1990s, completing more than 40 years of teaching and service to the University of South Carolina.




The Law Class of 1968 Scholarship was created in May 2008 in honor of the Law Class of 1968 40th Reunion. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.






Law Class of 1983/Harry M. Lightsey, Jr. Scholarship

This scholarship was created in September 2003 by the Law Class of 1983 in honor of Harry M. Lightsey, Jr., Professor of Law at the University of South Carolina, and Dean of the School of Law from 1980-1986. Dean Lightsey died in January 2006. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit.

Levan J. Wingate Scholarship

The Levan J. Wingate Scholarship was created in August 2007 by his wife, Mrs. Tommie Hall Wingate, in his honor and memory. Levan J. Wingate, who died in 2007, was a 1991 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a worthy student.



Lipscomb Family Foundation Fellowship

The Lipscomb Family Foundation Scholarship was created in June 1996 in celebration and support of the improved relationship between the United States and the countries of the former Soviet Union. The Scholarship is awarded to an entering law student who received an undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina, based on academic excellence and qualities of leadership. Preference will be given to an individual who is a native of one of the countries that formerly comprised the Soviet Union, and who is studying in the United States.






Marc H. Westbrook Memorial Scholarship

The Marc H. Westbrook Scholarship was created in March 2007 by friends in memory of The Honorable Marc H. Westbrook, Judge of the Circuit Court of Lexington County, South Carolina. Judge Westbrook, a 1973 graduate of the School of Law, died in September 2005. The Scholarship is awarded to a first-year law student who demonstrates financial need, with preference to an applicant who has strong academic credentials, demonstrates a willingness to work hard, and whose previous activities demonstrate a commitment to serving his/her community and the public in general. Applicants who are from South Carolina, Lexington County, and who have participated in the South Carolina Bar's Mock Trial Competition will be preferred.



Marshall Mays Scholarship

This scholarship was created in June 2000 by Mr. Marshall T. Mays, a 1950 graduate of the School of Law.



Mary P. & J. Calhoun Pruitt, Sr. Law Scholarship

This scholarship was created in May 1999 by J. Calhoun Pruitt, Sr. in his own name and to honor the memory of his wife, Mary, who died in March 1998. Mr. Pruitt died in August 2005. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit to rising second- or third-year student who demonstrates outstanding promise, and who has a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5.



Memory Hold the Door Endowment

The Memory Hold the Door Scholarship Endowment was created in 1958 by members of the South Carolina Bar to preserve for the inspiration of future generations the spirit and the high ethical and professional standards of past leaders of the legal profession. The endowment will promote, through the School of Law, the continuing welfare of the legal profession.






Miriam Mays Earle Scholarship in Law

The Miriam Mays Earle Scholarship was created in August 1978 by the will of Rudolph Earle, in memory of his late sister, Miriam Mays Earle. Mr. Earle, a member of the Law Class of 1918, died in October 1977. The Scholarship is awarded to a worthy law student.



Moida Hodges Trust

The Moida Hodges Scholarship was created in 1958 in memory of Edward P. Hodges, brother of Moida Hodges. Edward Hodges was a 1919 graduate of the School of Law and a distinguished practicing attorney.



Morris D. Rosen Endowed Scholarship Fund

The scholarship(s) will be awarded by the University of South Carolina School of Law Scholarship Committee to deserving law students.



Patsy Ann Fortinberry Scholarship Endowment

This scholarship was created by the estate of Patsy Ann Fortinberry, a 1961 graduate of the School of Law, who died in September 2003. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need, with preference to women.



Paul A. Cooper Memorial Legal Scholarship Fund

The Paul A. Cooper Memorial Legal Scholarship was created in 1960 by Mrs. Margaret H. Cooper, widow of the late Paul Anderson Cooper. Mr. Cooper received his law degree in 1913 and practiced law until his death in 1956. The Scholarship is awarded to a worthy law student who demonstrates financial need.






Paul M. Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was created in June 1989 by family and friends of Paul M. Moore, represented by his daughter, Mrs. Pam Moore Barrett. Mr. Moore, a School of Law graduate, died in 1989. He was an attorney and served as a member of the South Carolina House from 1957 -1958 and from 1961-1964. He served as a member of the South Carolina Senate from 1969-1976 and was elected Judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit in July of 1976. He retired from the bench in 1981 but continued serving as a special judge through January 1989. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit, with preference to students from Spartanburg or Cherokee County.



Paul W. McAlister Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship created by Albert D. McAlister, son of Paul W. McAlister, a 1953 graduate of the School of Law. Mr. McAlister died in January 2008. The Scholarship is awarded with preference to a Clemson University graduate, or if there are no qualified recipients, to a mature student based on potential for academic excellence and financial need.



Pinckney L. Cain Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was created in December 1988 by Mrs. Julia Cain in memory of her late husband, Mr. Pinckney Cain. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit.



Prue Goolsby Endowment Fund

The Prue Goolsby Scholarship was created in September 2002 by The Honorable C. Tolbert Goolsby, Jr. and Dr. Lane Goolsby, in honor of their wife and mother, Mary Ellen Fraser Goolsby, better known to her family and friends as Prue. Mrs. Goolsby was employed at the McKissick Library at the University of South Carolina from 1960-1972. She joined the staff of the Coleman Karesh Law Library in 1973 where she was in charge of circulation and interlibrary borrowing and lending for 20 years until her retirement in 1993. The Scholarship is awarded to a law or graduate student who has expressed an interest in law librarianship and has worked at least two semesters in the Law Library.






R.B. Hildebrand Scholarship

The R. B. Hildebrand Scholarship was created in 1975 in memory of Mr. Raymond B. Hildebrand by his widow, Mrs. R. B. Hildebrand. Mr. Hildebrand, a graduate of the School of Law, died in 1954. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student.



Raymon Schwartz, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Raymon Schwartz, Sr. Memorial Scholarship was created in March 1986 in memory of Raymon Schwartz, Sr. by his daughter, Mrs. Edith Schwartz Joel. The Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student from Sumter County.



Raymond Galindo Trust

The Raymond Galindo Scholarship was created in 1989 by a bequest from the Estate of Raymond Galindo.



Richard E. Day Endowed Scholarship

The Scholarship was established in January 2013 by Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Law, Richard E. Day. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan, J.D., 1957; Dean, University of South Carolina School of Law, 1977-1980; Professor, University of South Carolina School of Law, 1975-1999; Distinguished Professor Emeritus, 1999-present.

The scholarship will be awarded by the University of South Carolina School of Law Scholarship Selection Committee to a deserving law student.



Robert E. Salane Scholarship Endowment

The Robert E. Salane Scholarship was created in October 2008 by the family of Robert E. Salane, in his honor and memory. Mr. Salane, a 1975 graduate of the School of Law, died in November 1996. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student with financial need.






Robert W. Foster, Sr. Scholarship

The Robert W. Foster, Sr. Scholarship was created in November 2008 in the name of Robert W. Foster, Sr. who began teaching at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1962, and who served as its Dean from 1970 to 1976. He was named Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Law in 1991. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.



Rodney A. Peeples Scholarship Endowment

The Rodney A. Peeples Scholarship was created in honor of The Honorable Rodney A. Peeples, of Barnwell, South Carolina, who has served as Resident Circuit Judge of the 2nd Judicial Circuit of South Carolina since 1974. Judge Peeples is a 1964 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.



Roy Webster Trustee Scholarship Fund

The Roy Webster Scholarships are funded with an allocation to the University of South Carolina School of Law by the University’s Board of Trustees, to support scholarships for law students.



S.S. Seidemann Memorial Fund

This scholarship was created in May 1977 by Ethel Love Seidemann Foster, daughter of the late S.S. Seidemann, and others. S. S. Seidemann was a 1927 graduate of the School of Law, a prominent South Carolina attorney, and a devoted supporter and loyal alumnus of the University of South Carolina and the School of Law. The scholarship is awarded to a student with potential for high achievement in the practice of law who demonstrates financial need.

The Senator Marshall B. Williams Scholarship was created I his memory by his wife, Mrs. Margaret S. Williams. Senator Marshall B. Williams, a 1936 School of Law graduate, served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1947-1952 and in the South Carolina Senate from 1953-1995. The Scholarship is awarded to a student who exhibits academic excellence and who demonstrates financial need, with preference to students from Orangeburg County..






Shannon Smith Stuckey Endowment

The Shannon Smith Stuckey Scholarship was created in 2004 by her family and by members of the School of Law Class of 1994 in honor and memory of their daughter and classmate, Shannon Smith Stuckey. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student.



Shepard Kollock Nash - Davidson Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 2000 by Davidson College alumni who attended the School of Law, and by members of the Nash Family in memory of Shepard Kollock Nash. Mr. Nash attended Davidson College and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1917. He practiced law in Sumter County for many years, and served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and in the State Senate. Mr. Nash died in 1980. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a graduate of Davidson College on the basis of merit and financial need.



Sinkler Gibbs Simons Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was created in April 1986 by the law firm of Sinkler, Gibbs, Simons & Guerard in honor of three senior members of the firm: Huger Sinkler, Charles H. Gibbs and Albert Simons, Jr. The Scholarship is awarded to an entering first-year student with outstanding scholastic and personal achievement, with the expectation that the student will receive the Scholarship for the three years of law school.



Sol Blatt, Jr. Scholarship Fund

The Sol Blatt, Jr. Scholarship was created in 1982 by members of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. Awarded based on need to a South Carolina resident.






Sol E. Abrams Law Scholarship Fund

The Sol E. Abrams Scholarship was created in December 1979 by C. Ben Bowen, Mr. Abrams’s law partner, and Sam Breen, the uncle of Mr. Abrams's wife, in memory of Sol E. Abrams. Mr. Abrams, a partner in the Greenville law firm formerly known as Abrams Bowen Tapp & Parham, practiced law for 27 years until his death in 1978. The Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need.



South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association Scholarship Fund

This Scholarship was created in November 1983 to honor members of the judiciary. The Scholarship is awarded to a South Carolina resident who demonstrates financial need..



Stephen Pierre Traynor Endowment

The Stephen Pierre Traynor Scholarship was created in December 2007 by Michael Traynor, the brother of the late Stephen Pierre Traynor. Michael Traynor, President of the American Law Institute and a member of the Washington, D.C. law firm of Cooley Godward Kronish LLP, was the received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law at its May 2007 Commencement ceremony. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.



Strom Thurmond Fund

The Strom Thurmond Scholarship was created in November 1978 by family and friends of the late The Honorable J. Strom Thurmond. Senator Thurmond, who was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1930, died in June 2003. Senator Thurmond was elected to the United States Senate in 1954, and at the time of his death in 2003 at age 100, he stood as the longest serving and oldest Senator in U.S. history with 48 years of service. The Scholarship is awarded based on financial need and academic merit.






Suggs and Kelly Fund

The Suggs and Kelly Fund was created in 1996 to defer expenses of annual lectures at the School of Law. The fund could also be directed to such other educational uses as deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors of the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation, and now supports student scholarships awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.



T. English McCutchen III Scholarship

The T. English McCutchen Scholarship was created in March 2008 by Thomas E. McCutchen, father of T. English McCutchen III, and his friends in his honor and memory. T. English McCutchen III, a 1973 graduate of the School of Law, died February 2008. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.



T.M. "Babe" Nelson Law Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was created in December 1982 in honor of Commissioner T. M. "Babe" Nelson on behalf of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Nelson was the Commissioner of the SC Industrial Commission, now the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Commission, who served three terms as mayor of the town of St. Matthews and eight years as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Mr. Nelson died in November 1989. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit to a South Carolina resident..



Thad and Taylor Myers Endowment Scholarship

The Scholarship was created in December 2003 by Thad L. and S. Taylor Myers. Mr. Myers is a practicing attorney and a 1988 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit and financial need.






The Capers Bouton Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

1.The scholarship may be awarded to a second-year or rising third-year student. There will be only one scholarship awarded in any one year. The same person can be awarded the scholarship in successive years. If there are no candidates for the scholarship in a given year, the scholarship will not be awarded.

2.The scholarship is awarded only to law students who have their principal place of residence in Greenville County, South Carolina. Financial need shall be given preference and does not require a showing of financial need per se.

3.To be eligible for the Bouton Scholarship, a student must have a cumulative grade point average (“GPA”) of not less than 2.75. The scholarship cannot be awarded to a student who does not have, at the time of the award, the minimum requisite GPA.

4.The scholarship is awarded preferably to a law student who is currently employed which augments his or her income while in law school.

The South Carolina Bar Legal Opportunity Scholarships are to be awarded to one University of South Carolina School of Law student per entering class, with the intention to have one scholarship recipient in each of the three class years simultaneously. The scholarships will remain with the students for their entire three-year law school career. If a scholarship recipient withdraws early, then the money will be reallocated to another student best fitting the criteria. The scholarship(s) will be awarded by the University of South Carolina School of Law Selection Committee as part of the University's overall diversity of underrepresented groups.






The South Carolina Chapter of The Association of Corporate Counsel Endowed Award Fund

The South Carolina Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, the professional association of in-house counsel, established this award to recognize a third-year law student with a demonstrated interest in business and corporate law. The recipient will be selected by a committee of business and corporate law faculty; factors to be considered may include academic performance in business courses, law school or college externships, summer clerkship experience focusing on business issues, enrollment in a dual JD/MBA degree program or prior conferral of an MBA degree, participation in business-related student organizations, and work experience before or during law school. One award will be distributed annually in the amount of $1,000.



Unger Family Scholarship Fund

The Unger Family Scholarship was created in January 1998 by Richard Unger in memory of his father, H. Wayne Unger and his mother, Keith Jefferies Unger. Richard Unger is a 1970 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a student with a family member who was or is in good standing with the South Carolina Bar, with consideration to financial need and academic excellence.



W. Francis Marion Fund

The W. Francis Marion Scholarship was created in November 1998 by Elizabeth Marshall Marion, wife of the late William Francis Marion, Sr. Mr. Marion was a managing partner of the Haynsworth & Haynsworth law firm in Greenville, South Carolina from 1969 until 1985, and he remained active until his death in 1995. The Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates strong academic potential, integrity and ethics, a breadth of knowledge in the liberal arts, and an interest in trial practice.



Waring Family Endowment

This scholarship was created in January 2004 by the Waring Family to support scholarships at the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded based on merit and academic excellence.






West-Olivetti Endowed Scholarship

William L. Bethea, Jr., Scholarship Fund

The William L. Bethea, Jr. Scholarship was created in June 2002 by Paula Harper Bethea, wife of William L. Bethea, Jr., in his honor. Mr. Bethea is a 1969 graduate of the School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded with preference to a graduate of Newberry College with an excellent grade-point average, not lower than a 3.0. If there are no qualified candidates, preference will be given to a graduate of Presbyterian College.



William P. Walker, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund

The scholarship(s) will be awarded by the University of South Carolina School of Law Scholarship Committee to deserving law students.



William T. Howell Scholarship Fund

The William T. Howell Scholarship was created in March 2000 by the Colleton County Bar Association to honor retired South Carolina Court of Appeals Judge William T. Howell. Preference given to a graduate of Clemson University who has enrolled as a first year student at the School of Law, with consideration to financial need.






Yarborough Applegate Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in December 2012 by the law firm of Yarborough Applegate. The co-founders, William E. Applegate IV, 2002 and David B. Yarborough, Jr., 1998 are alums of the University of South Carolina School of Law.

The scholarship will be awarded by the University of South Carolina School of Law Scholarship Selection Committee to deserving law students with financial need.
