Anne D. and James B. Morrison Law Scholarship Fund

The Morrison Scholarship created in 1982 by Anne D. and James B. Morrison. Mr. Morrison was a 1932 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student who demonstrates financial need, and who has resided in the 15th Judicial Circuit (Georgetown County) for at least two years. In the event there is no applicant who meets these criteria, the Scholarship Committee may use its discretion in awarding the scholarship.

Billy C. Coleman Scholarship Endowment

The Billy C. Coleman Scholarship was created in September 2009 by Richard J. Breibart, to honor his mentor, Billy C. Coleman, a 1938 graduate of the School of Law, who practiced law in Saluda and Lexington County for 69 years, until his retirement in 2007. The Scholarship is awarded to a South Carolina resident, with preference given to someone intending to practice in the State of South Carolina and who has financial need, with special interest in students who are first generation college graduates.

Brailsford-Rosen Scholarship in Law

The Brailsford-Rosen Scholarship was created in 1984 by the Orangeburg County Bar Association, represented by Robert R. Horger, Esq. Louis Rosen received his law degree in 1934. He practiced law for a number of years, then in 1962 was elected to the Circuit Court, where he served until his retirement in 1979. He died in 1989. James Brailsford, Jr. received his law degree in 1964 and retired in 1974 as an Associate Justice of the SC Supreme Court. He died in 1993. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit and financial need to a South Carolina resident.

The purpose of this Fund is to provide support for The University of South Carolina School of Law Moot Court Team Endowment established by the School of Law Class of 1975. The Coleman Karesh Scholarship was created in 1977 by a group of University of South Carolina alumni and friends of Coleman Karesh, in order to preserve Mr. Karesh's research notes. Coleman Karesh was a graduate of the School of Law and served as Professor of Law from 1937-1972.

Daniel R. McLeod Law Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 1982 by the Deputy Attorney General, Karen L. Henderson, John B. “Jack” Bryan, III and other committee members to honor retired Senior Attorney General, Daniel R. McLeod. Mr. McLeod was a 1948 law graduate of the School of Law. Mr. McLeod was elected Attorney General of South Carolina in 1958; re-elected five times and served for 24 years from 1959 until his retirement in 1983 as the Senior Attorney General in the United States. He was presented the Wyman Award in 1968 at the Nation’s most outstanding Attorney General by the National Association of Attorneys General.

This scholarship is awarded to deserving law students enrolled in the School of Law.

David Anthony Kusa Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship created in December 2006 by Joseph and Marie Kusa, parents of David A. Kusa, and by Kristina Kusa, widow of David A. Kusa. David Kusa, a member of the Law Class of 2005, died tragically in May 2005. The Scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and financial need.

Emory M. Sneeden Scholarship Fund

The Emory M. Sneeden Scholarship was created in January 1989 by friends of Emory M. Sneeden, represented by the late Governor Robert E. McNair. Mr. Sneeden worked for many years with Gov. McNair at the McNair Law Firm, and was also an associate dean and lecturer at the University of South Carolina School of Law. From 1984-1986, Mr. Sneeden served as Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Mr. Sneeden died in 1987. The Scholarship is awarded to a South Carolina resident who demonstrates academic excellence.

Ford-Coleman Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Ford-Coleman Scholarship was created in June 2005 to honor the donor's mother, Mamie Ford Coleman, and in memory of her father, Curtis Everett Coleman. Mamie Ford Coleman worked at the South Carolina Tax Commission for more than twenty-seven years. The late Mr. Coleman received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1947, and his law degree from the University in 1948. Mr. Coleman worked at the Internal Revenue Service for more than 24 years and was the recipient of the Albert Gallatin Award, the highest award presented to an employee of the U.S. Treasury Department for outstanding career service. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a student with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, on the basis of academic merit.

Frank Eppes Scholarship Fund

The School of Law Class of 1986 created this scholarship in December 2007 in memory of The Honorable Frank Eppes, who died in August 2002. Judge Eppes was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives while an undergraduate student at USC, and he served in the House from 1949 until 1962, when he was elected judge of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. He served as judge until his retirement in 1985, but he continued to sit by special designation until 2000. Mr. Eppes died in 2002. The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student.

Harriet McBryde Johnson Scholarship

The Harriet McBryde Johnson Scholarship was created in November 2008 by family and friends in honor and memory of Harriet McBryde Johnson, who died in 2008. Ms. Johnson was a 1985 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, whose career as civil rights lawyer and as a tireless advocate for the rights of the disabled made her a nationally revered attorney and a “titanic figure in state legal history,” according to Jean Toal, Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. The Herbert W. Hoefer Scholarship was created in 1970 to honor Mr. Hoefer’s close association with the University of South Carolina, as two daughters and one son-in-law graduated from the University. In May 1990, the scholarship was renamed at the request of Mr. Hoefer’s daughter, Christina Hoefer Myers, to include one of his daughters, Jean H. Toal, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina and a 1968 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. The Scholarship is awarded to an incoming student on the basis of academic potential and financial need and may be renewed for each year of law school.

Krista D. Latshaw Fund

The Krista D. Latshaw Scholarship was created in December 2005 by members of the Latshaw Family. Krista D. Latshaw, along with fellow USC School of Law classmates, had expressed a desire to establish a scholarship fund at the School of Law in recognition of and appreciation for the highly valued experiences and education they received as law students. At Krista’s unexpected death in 2003, her family elected to use life insurance proceeds to establish a permanently endowed scholarship at the School of Law. This scholarship was created in December 1985 to honor the former Senator L. Marion Gressette and Florence H. Gressette, parents of Lawrence M. Gressette, Jr. While serving in the South Carolina State Senate in the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. Gressette worked against school desegregation, but in later years he fought to keep Clemson College open when ordered to admit its first black student, worked on passage of a bill marking the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a state holiday, and authored a plan to desegregate the state’s colleges and universities. This scholarship was created in June 1989 by family and friends of Paul M. Moore, represented by his daughter, Mrs. Pam Moore Barrett. Mr. Moore, a School of Law graduate, died in 1989. He was an attorney and served as a member of the South Carolina House from 1957 -1958 and from 1961-1964. Strom Thurmond Fund

The Strom Thurmond Scholarship was created in November 1978 by family and friends of the late The Honorable J. Strom Thurmond. Senator Thurmond, who was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1930, died in June 2003. Senator Thurmond was elected to the United States Senate in 1954, and at the time of his death in 2003 at age 100, he stood as the longest serving and oldest Senator in U.S. history with 48 years of service. The Scholarship is awarded based on financial need and academic merit.

T.M. "Babe" Nelson Law Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was created in December 1982 in honor of Commissioner T. M. "Babe" Nelson on behalf of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Nelson was the Commissioner of the SC Industrial Commission, now the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Commission, who served three terms as mayor of the town of St. Matthews and eight years as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Mr. Nelson died in November 1989. The Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit to a South Carolina resident..

The Capers Bouton Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

1.The scholarship may be awarded to a second-year or rising third-year student. There will be only one scholarship awarded in any one year. The same person can be awarded the scholarship in successive years. If there are no candidates for the scholarship in a given year, the scholarship will not be awarded.

2.The scholarship is awarded only to law students who have their principal place of residence in Greenville County, South Carolina. Financial need shall be given preference and does not require a showing of financial need per se.

3.To be eligible for the Bouton Scholarship, a student must have a cumulative grade point average (“GPA”) of not less than 2.75. The scholarship cannot be awarded to a student who does not have, at the time of the award, the minimum requisite GPA.

4.The scholarship is awarded preferably to a law student who is currently employed which augments his or her income while in law school.

The South Carolina Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, the professional association of in-house counsel, established this award to recognize a third-year law student with a demonstrated interest in business and corporate law. The W. Francis Marion Scholarship was created in November 1998 by Elizabeth Marshall Marion, wife of the late William Francis Marion, Sr. Mr. Marion was a managing partner of the Haynsworth & Haynsworth law firm in Greenville, South Carolina from 1969 until 1985, and he remained active until his death in 1995. The Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates strong academic potential, integrity and ethics, a breadth of knowledge in the liberal arts, and an interest in trial practice.
