June 13, 2021 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Happy Ordination Anniversary

Fr. Colin Fricke!

(June 13, 2021 - 1st Anniversary)

Last Sunday we had the beautiful opportunity

to celebrate the Solemnity of The Most Holy Body

and Blood of Jesus Christ with a Eucharistic

Procession. Approximately 100 people gathered to

process through the streets of Grosse Pointe, singing

and praying as they followed behind the Monstrance,

which holds the Eucharist. We started by travelling

down Lake Shore to Newberry, up to Kercheval, over

to Kenwood, and back to St. Paul. It was a very warm

day in the high 80’s, but our spirits were high as we

sang Eucharistic hymns, recited the rosary and the

Divine Mercy Chaplet. The walk was peaceful and

gave us an opportunity to pray as we adored and

witnessed to the community our love for our

Eucharistic Lord.

The procession was led by altar servers

carrying the cross and candles. Just in front of the

Monstrance was the thurifer (who incenses the

Eucharist) as we walked. The Eucharist was protected

under a canopy made especially for processions such

as this.

I am grateful to our seminarian Jeremy and

Rick Rutan for organizing and executing the day. It

takes diligence to work through all the details to make

a procession safe and prayerful. The Grosse Pointe

Farms police are wonderful people and were very

helpful when we had to cross intersectionskeeping us

safe. The Knights of Columbus, under the direction of

the Grand Knight Richard Sandifer and the Boy

Scouts under the leadership of Michael Johnson were

very helpful during the procession. We had

parishioners driving along in a car just in case

someone needed help. They were our good

Samaritans! Angela Theiss led us in song so the

pilgrims who walked could keep focused in prayer.

Fr. Colin and I were honored

to carry the monstrance holding our

Eucharistic Lord Jesus. We were so

close to Him as we walked the

streets as the Holy Spirit of Christ’s

love permeated the area. Since Fr.

Colin and I were at the beginning of

the procession we didn’t see what

was happening as we were walking. Parishioners

recalled how people came out of their homes and

asked what we were doing. Excitedly they were able

to explain the event, its significance and why the

Eucharist is important for us. The whole event lasted

50 minutes but the impact will unfold for days and

months or even years to come. We must never

underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit working in

the hearts of people just by our witness to Jesus

Christ.

Finally, a thank you to all who were able to

participate. I know it was a very warm day but at least

it didn’t rain! And for those who could not walk and

remained to pray, I am most grateful for your quiet

witness!

 Today, June 13

th

is Fr. Colin Fricke’s First

Anniversary of Priesthood. Despite his being ordained

amidst a pandemic and settling into parish life when

everything was in flux he persevered and celebrates

his first of many anniversaries to the priesthood.

Please keep Fr. Colin in prayer as he continues to

minister as a priest here at St. Paul. Thank You Fr.

Colin for saying “yes” to the Lord and being His

priest!!

In gratitude,

Fr. Jim Bilot

The Vocation Committee wishes

Fr. Colin a happy first anniversary

of your ordination June 13th.

We are blessed to have you at

St. Paul on the Lake!

An introduction to

inspirational information

Title: Volume 7

Category: Mystical exper ience

Timeframe: © 2005

Density: light

Pages: 93

This book is from a series of

inner locutions in which the visionary

‘Anne’ relates her mystical experience

with Jesus and the Saints. The books

have a Nihil Obstat (nothing against the

Faith) and an Imprimatur (support of

the bishop) on them. The Apostolate of

the Returning King which spreads

devotion to these books is a private

association of the Faithful with

Juridical Personality. An excerpt:

 July 27

th

2004, St. Catherine of

Siena

My dear brothers and sisters in

the world must put all their hope and

trust in Jesus. People in the world will

fail you, my friends. This is the sad

truth. How could they not when they

are human and dealing with human

weaknesses? Do not be alarmed when

this happens to you. I will tell you a

secret. You may have heard that saints

welcomed situations such as this. Do

you know why? Because we considered

it practice. That was our secret. We

knew very well that all trust and hope

had to lie with Jesus. Our goal was to

belong totally to Him. When dear

friends betrayed us or loved ones failed

us, we used the

situations as priceless

opportunities to grow

deeper in unity with

Jesus by detaching

further from the world,

and also to practice

His beautiful example

off forgiveness.

Jeremy Schupbach, Sacred Heart Seminarian

and St. Paul on the Lake Intern

Hello everybody! I have some news to announce: I will be leading a Bible Study on

St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 19

th

and Saturday, June

26

th

. This is exciting for me because I have been looking forward to using this summer internship to

share some of the great material that I have been taught at seminary. Some of the most profound parts of

that material have come from my classes on Scripture. For most of my life, I like many other Catholics

did not know a whole lot about the Bible. In fact, I sort of avoided it because I found it intimidating and

confusing. Thankfully my seminary professors showed me how to read the Bible, and I have been blown

away at the depths that it contains. I am hoping that I can replicate that experience, in some measure, for

all of you!

The reason that I am choosing Galatians is twofold: First, it’s very short it has only six chapters and takes up

about 5 pages in most Bibles so it will be a good opportunity for me to get my feet wet, so to speak. Second, despite being

short, it is jampacked, and it covers some of the most essential themes of the New Testament. Plus, it is actually a very

entertaining read, as St. Paul gets quite “sassy”, for lack of a better term, in the rebukes he directs at the Galatians.

St. Paul’s letters are the second most important part of the Scriptures behind only the Gospels themselves

because it is St. Paul who really helps us to convert the facts of Jesus’s life as they are contained in the Gospels into a

complete theological worldview that explains what God has done for us in the past, the response that we owe Him in the

present, and the hope of God has in store for us in the future. So… you might say that St. Paul is kind of a big deal! We are

fortunate to have him as the patron saint of our parish.

St. Paul’s letter to the Romans is generally considered to be the masterpiece of the Pauline letters because it is the

most systematic and thorough unfolding of Paul’s major themes. The Letter to the Galatians, however, actually covers many

of the same themes, and has a similar arrangement, it is just a lot shorter. I like to think of Galatians as “the abridged

version” of Romans. So, Galatians is a condensed version of one of the most important works of one of the most important

authors in the Bible it gets right to the heart of things.

Among the topics that we will cover in this twoweek Bible study on Galatians are: a general background on Paul

and his letters; justification by faith and why Protestants misinterpret this rich biblical concept and why Catholics need to re

appropriate it; the meaning of “the freedom of the sons of God”; the methodology used by St. Paul to interpret the Old

Testament; the relationship of Christianity to Judaism; the fruits of the Holy Spirit; and more.

These Bible Study sessions will last for one hour. I will deliver a presentation that will last for about fortyfive

minutes and the remaining time will be devoted to questions or to group conversation. For my own preparation I will be

using the commentary on Galatians from the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture series, but having that book and

reading along is completely optional. The only preparation one really should do is to read the text of Galatians itself, which,

again, is quite short. The sessions will take place in the Assembly Room attached to the main Church building. Beginning at

9 AM on Saturday, they are very convenient for anyone who wants to attend the 8:15 mass on Saturday morning, but of

course anyone can feel free to simply arrive at 9:00. Coffee will be provided! With caffeination, fellowship, and exposure to

the Word of God, these will be a great way to kick off your weekends and to grow in Scriptural literacy and love of God!

I hope to see you all there! If you are interested, please simply send me an email at [email protected].

When the world was brought to a standstill

by COVID-19, people continued to turn to

our parish ministries for help. Recurring gifts

sustained our parish and ensured that we

were there for those who needed us, and

eGiving provides a way forward now as

those in our community continue to face

uncertainty. To help those who are

counting on us, St. Paul on the Lake

depends on online donations from caring

individuals like you. We prayerfully request

that you consider signing up for eGiving

and setting up your recurring donation. You

can use eGiving from your computer,

smartphone, or tablet for recurring and one

ST. PAUL PRESERVATION ENDOWMENT FUND

Thank you to those of you who have

already mailed your CSA pledge cards as

this ensures we Fuel the Mission to witness

Christ. Fr. Jim Bilot is asking all parishioners

to join him in contributing to this year’s

Catholic Services Appeal. If we all give,

we will easily meet St. Paul on the Lake’s

2021 CSA target of $260,792.00, which is

our parish share of the support of more

than 170 CSA-funded ministries, programs,

and services.

Any gifts we receive over our target

will be returned. If, however, we do not

meet this target, we will have to make up

the shortfall from our general fund.

If you are still prayerfully considering

your CSA pledge, you may mail your

completed pledge card in the pre-

addressed envelope that was provided

you. You may also pledge your gift to our

parish’s campaign online at givecsa.org.

If you have not already, you will receive your

CSA pledge card and information directly

from the AOD. Parishes are no longer

responsible for mailing or receiving CSA

information. Please call 888-331-8695 if you

have any questions or concerns.

CSA goal for 2021 is $260,792.00.

The St. Paul on the Lake Preservation Endowment

Fund was created through the Catholic

Foundation of Michigan in April of 2021 to provide

long-term support for the preservation and

enhancement of the historical buildings and

grounds of the St. Paul campus. The fund is

managed to ensure a perpetual source of support

for generations to come. The Catholic Foundation

of Michigan will accept one-time, reoccurring, or

planned gifts of money, securities, retirement plan

assets, fully paid life insurance policies, and other

assets designated to benefit the St. Paul on the

Lake Preservation Endowment Fund. Please
