The use of woodburning stoves isgrowing and spaceheaters are sellingrapidly, or comingout or storage. Fire-places are burningwood and manmade logs. Allthese methods ofheating may be ac-ceptable. They arehowever, a majorcontributing factor in
residential fires.Many of these firescan be prevented.You can prevent theloss of life and prop-erty resulting fromheating fires bybeing able to iden-tify potential haz-ards and followingthese safety tips.Wood StovesWood stovescause over 4,000
residential firesevery year. Carefullyfollow the manufac-turer's installationand maintenance in-structions. Look forsolid construction,such as plate steelor cast iron metal.Check for cracksand inspect legs,hinges and doorseals for smoothjoints and seams.Use only seasonedwood for fuel, notgreen wood, artifi-cial logs, or trash.Inspect and cleanyour pipes andchimneys annuallyand check monthlyfor damage or ob-structions. Be sureto keep combustibleobjects at leastthree feet away fromyour wood stove.Electric Space
HeatersBuy only heaterswith the Under-writer's Laboratory
(UL) safetylisting.Check tomakesure ithas athermostatcontrol mecha-nism, and will switchoff automatically ifthe heater falls over.Heaters are not dry-ers or tables; don'tdry clothes or storeobjects on top ofyour heater. Check tomake sure thedamper is open be-fore starting any fire.Never burn trash,paper or greenwood in your fire-
place. These materi-als cause heavy cre-osote buildup andare difficult to con-trol. Use a screenheavy enough tostop rolling logs andbig enough to coverthe entire opening ofthe fireplace tocatch flying sparks.Don't wear loose-fit-ting clothes nearany open flame.Make sure the fire iscompletely out be-fore leaving thehouse or going tobed. Store cooledashes in a tightlysealed metal con-tainer outside thehome.Finally, having aworking smokealarm dramaticallyincreases yourchances of survivinga fire. And remem-ber to practice ahome escape planfrequently with yourfamily.

Thirty-four per-cent of the surveyrespondents said the"shower is my timefor just focusing onme." It represents away to not only getclean, but to also es-cape from the stressof the day.However, thoseshowers, relaxingand otherwise, ac-count for approxi-mately 17 percent ofresidential indoorwater use in theUnited States,adding up to morethan 1.2 trillion gal-lons of water eachyear nationwide, ac-cording to the U.S.Environmental Pro-tection Agency.It's not likely youwill want give up reg-ular showers - for hy-gienic and emotionalreasons. That's whythe shower is aspace manufacturershave been studyingfor years. They'reworking to createproducts that will

More thaneight out of 10 adultshaven't changedtheir showerhead inthe past three years,according to theeNation survey. TheEPA created the Wa-terSense Program tohelp homeownersconserve water. In2010, it introducedspecifications thatrequire a shower-head to flow at a rateof 2 gallons perminute (gpm) or lessin order to be quali-fied as a Wa-terSense-labeledproduct. Itworks well in coldertemperatures, but itrequires special han-dling to preventharm to skin and del-icate interior sur-faces when it istracked inside onshoes.Magnesium chlo-ride may be the bestsalt to use in verycold temperatures. Itis effective in tem-peratures down tominus 15 degrees,yet it is gentle toskin, vegetation andconcrete. It also pro-
