Mayors messageI recommend that you have a read of the second edition of the Salisbury Seniors, Aged to Perfection Calendar. We have a number of articles which we hope will be of interest to senior residents.

Plus there is an extensive calendar of events within Salisbury and beyond. There are opportunities to engage in physical exercise, attend craft sessions, learn something new or perhaps go on an outing with others to places of interest.

Hopefully there is something in this edition of Salisbury Seniors that interests you and I encourage you to spend some time planning your calendar for the next three months.

This edition features information on the changes that are happening at the Jack Young Centre, which has been a part of life for many Salisbury seniors for more than 25 years.

Much has changed over that time and we invite you to visit the centre, or re-visit if you

have attended in the past. The New Year is a blank book, my best wishes for you to convert it into a beautiful story! Happy New Year!

Gillian Aldridge JP Mayor of Salisbury

Dear Resident,Welcome to the New Year! I would like to take this opportunity to wish you well for 2015.Each New Year is a time for renewal, perhaps reflection on the things that are important in life and what we would like to achieve in the coming 12 months.

The Jack Young Centre has been part of the

Salisbury landscape for more than 25 years

and there are still people who don’t know

where it is or perhaps have never visited the

Centre.

There has been a lot of activity around the Centre during the year with some refurbishment, new programs with a focus on wellness, a new menu, an expanded staff team and 2015 will see the Centre re-launched as a ‘One Stop Shop’ for seniors.

The service has been designed to support older people to access information and services, and staff will be available to assist residents to connect with:

• Social activities in Salisbury

• Physical activities: - Centre-based settings across the Council - Outdoor activities, walking groups cycling - Team sports, bowling, crochet, tennis etc

• Group outings

• Transport information and options

• Volunteering

• Lifelong Learning

• In-home service & support (domestic assistance, garden maintenance etc.)

• Primary health information (forums, dementia awareness etc)

There will be many changes in the delivery of aged care services in the coming years – from in-home low level services to high level packages of care delivered within people’s homes and the staff at JYC will assist older people to access information about their options and how to access services if required.

We will also ensure that older residents receive information in their cultural language, through bilingual staff or by the use of interpreters.

This new service will be launched on Friday 13 March at the Centre’s Open Day between 10am and 2pm.

Please put this day in your diary and come along and enjoy a day at the Jack Young Centre – perhaps try one of the activities currently available, have lunch in Jack’s Café, meet the staff and see what is on offer to ensure that older residents in Salisbury have access to information and services to support healthy ageing.

The internet connection and computers at the kiosk can be used by seniors for practice and personal computer use outside of scheduled training times.

Training: Volunteer tutors have access to suitable training materials to teach senior Australians about computers and the internet.

Training can be tailored to the needs of individuals in consultation with the volunteer tutor.

Access Training at a Kiosk: Senior Australians visiting a Broadband for Seniors kiosk will have access to the Broadband for Seniors ‘Your Resource Kit‘. This kit was specifically designed for seniors.

The lessons within the kit can be used for one-on-one or group training with a volunteer tutor, or to take home to use on your own computer.

There are two Broadband for Seniors publically accessible computers at the Jack Young Centre.

Please phone Sue on 8406 8525 for further information, or to arrange a session.

Broadband for Seniors...is delivered by community-based organisations to provide Australians aged 50 years and over with a friendly and secure environment to receive computer and internet training at a ‘Broadband for Seniors’ kiosk.

Unfortunately a number of older Australians have poor diets – often from not eating a variety of nutritious foods.

People may experience a decreased appetite, or a reduced ability to shop, and cooking can become a chore. Others struggle to get the essential vitamins, minerals and fibre that are required to achieve general wellbeing.

The benefits of healthy eating include; increased mental sharpness, resistance to illness and disease, higher energy levels, faster recovery times, and better management of chronic health problems.

It is important to use every meal and snack as an opportunity for maximum nutrition and find ways to improve your diet. If you are unsure about your diet please make an appointment to see your local doctor or ask for assistance from friends, family or community aged care services.

Another option: Come and try the delicious food at the Jack Young Centre. We provide traditional home cooked style meals and desserts all freshly made on the day.

And while you are at Jack Young Centre find out about the different services and activities we provide for older people.

Eating should be an enjoyable and sociable activity that we can look forward to, whilst still being a healthy one, and it is just as important as we get older.

Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art in the sense that it focuses on mental and spiritual aspects integrated into movement. Some of the benefits of Tai Chi are:

1. Relieves physical effects of stress

2. Promotes deep breathing

3. Reduces bone loss in older adults

4. Improves lower body and leg strength

5. Helps with arthritis pain

6. Reduces blood pressure

7. Requires mind and body integration through mental imagery

8. Accumulates energy by releasing endorphins rather than depleting it

9. Enhances mental capacity and concentration

10. Improves balance and stability by strengthening ankles and knees

11. Promotes faster recovery from strokes and heart attacks

12. Improves conditions of Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s

You can join a Tai Chi group at the Jack Young Centre – Monday 9.15am to 10.15am, cost $7.00 or Para Hills Centre Tuesday 11.15am to 12.15pm, cost $7.00.

Tai Chi practiced regularly has some amazing benefits for seniors. If you are looking for a low-impact, relaxing form of exercise that only requires about 20 minutes a day and rewards your efforts; Tai Chi is for you.

VOLUNTEERING FOR

HAPPINESS & HEALTH

Salisbury SENIORS 8

In a report titled The Health Benefits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research it states ‘those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer’. Additionally, the health benefits of volunteering have shown that older volunteers are the most likely to receive greater benefits from volunteering.

So what are you waiting for? Take the first step to get happy and healthy by volunteering with your local Council.

In the next edition we’ll give you the top tips on volunteering with your grandchildren.

Did you know... Volunteering was identified as the second greatest source of joy – the first was dancing!

A study done by Argyle in 1996 found being happy plays an important role in health and many people find happiness in volunteering.

So now its official – helping the community helps you. This is not surprising research, ask any volunteer and they will tell you they get to meet new people, strengthen ties in their community, broaden their support network and meet people with common interests. This social connection and feeling of being valued generates a great sense of happiness.

But what about the health benefits of volunteering? Over the past two decades there has been a growing body of research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social ones.

Held over 10 days from 19 to 28 February, Salisbury Secret Garden includes eight popular venues throughout the City Centre, all within a five minute walk.

Mayor Gillian Aldridge described Salisbury as the heart of an emerging cultural groundswell in the North. “The second Salisbury Secret Garden program is again jam-packed with exciting, peculiar and professional performances from a diverse range of genres including comedy, cabaret, big band, children’s shows and even buskers.”

More than 30 different performers and shows have been confirmed including the Wepa Circus, the Amazing Drumming Monkeys, Mickster the Trickster, the Foenander Brothers,

BAZINGA! Nerdlesque Nights, the Cold Stars Tour, The Krusty Cowboy Club, Odondo Orchestra Ghana and many more.

This year, one of the venues includes the Jack Young Centre.

The Salisbury Secret Garden Guide is now released online outlining all the wonderful international and local acts performing in 2015.

You can also stay up-to-date by ‘Liking’ us on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/salisburysecretgarden.

IMAGE: Adelaide-based performer Ivan Rehorek is bringing his show Jack & The Beanstalk to Salisbury Secret Garden in February.

Salisbury Secret Garden will transform the Salisbury City Centre into a hub of creativity, excitement and entertainment as part of the 2015 Adelaide Fringe.

Version 2 – October 2011

Being active in the heat The risk of heat-related illness is greater when you exercise during hot, dry weather.

Your body produces more heat and you may not be able to produce enough sweat for your body to cool. If you exercise when it is humid, sweat may not be able to evaporate from your body.

You may start to feel ill and experience heat cramps, heat exhaustion or even heat stroke, which is an immediate medical emergency.

Taking precautions Use common sense - slow down during the heat, stay indoors as much as possible and avoid over exertion and strenuous activity.

Exercise moderately in hot or humid weather and not at the same level you would during cool weather. If you start to feel ill, slow down or stop.

Don’t exercise if you feel unwell, or are recovering from a recent illness.

Aim to exercise early in the morning, or at night when the temperature is cooler. Spend less time warming up during hot weather to avoid increasing your body heat and temperature.

Try to find some shade if exercising outdoors.

Protect children from over-exertion in hot weather, especially during intense or endurance exercise like netball or football.

Have a back-up plan to exercising outdoors when it is hot. Work out at an air-conditioned gym, walk laps inside a shopping centre. or climb stairs in an air-conditioned building.

DrinkingDrink plenty of water before and during exercise. At least 2-3 litres of water should be drunk a day during hot weather.

Have ‘sports drinks’ specifically designed to aid hydration as they help replace the sodium, chloride and potassium you lose through sweating.

ClothingChoose light coloured, light weight and loose fitting clothes to allow sweat to evaporate easily from the skin and provide protection from the sun. Cotton absorbs sweat whereas nylon/synthetic fabrics do not.

If possible, wear a shady hat and sun glasses. Caps do not provide adequate protection from the sun for the face or neck.

Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before exposure to the sun so it can be ‘absorbed’ into the skin for effective protection. Re-apply every 2-3 hours or more often if sweating heavily, or if swimming in an outdoor pool or the ocean.
