POLICE INTERCEPTORS have helped raise more than £9,000 in memory of their colleague PC Gavin Smith.

The money was raised at an afternoon tea event in aid of Butterwick Hospice which 350 fans attended on January 2nd.

PC Smith, who died of cancer in February 2017, had been with Durham Constabulary for 12 years and worked with the Roads Policing Unit at Spennymoor

station. He was also a star of the show Police Interceptors on Channel 5.

His widow, Kezi Smith and daughter Tilly attended the event. Kezi said: “It was a real comfort to us after Christmas, where we all missed Gav terribly.

“The Interceptors did Gav proud and it was fantastic to see them joining in the spirit of things, even auctioning themselves off to raise extra cash.

“Butterwick Hospice is such as a well-deserving charity.”

A NEW course to help residents boost their English and maths skills has been announced.

The 10-week course, organised by County Durham Housing Group, has been designed to boost employment skills for everyone taking part, as well as making everyday life easier.

Starting on Wednesday, January 24th, the Level 2 course will cover subjects including CV and letter writing, essential maths, and money management. The training will take place at Auckland Youth and Community Centre in Woodhouse Close from 9am to 4.30pm and is free to anyone who is a County Durham Housing Group customer looking for work.

Despite being delivered to Level 2 standard, no previous experience is necessary and teaching is carried out by highly-qualified tutors in small groups and at a

learners’ own speed. County Durham Housing

Group Community Training Coordinator, Sean Robson, said: “English and maths skills are vital in the workplace and in everyday life. This course not only offers practical skills, it also gives a nationally recognised qualification that employers will be looking for on applications.

“The course is free and is designed for people who might not be particularly confident in these areas. And the skills learned will genuinely make a huge impact on people’s lives.”

This course is the latest in a series of training and educational opportunities being offered by County Durham Housing Group, one of the region’s largest providers of affordable housing.

More information, and enrolment details, are available from Sean Robson on 0191 349 7753 or [email protected].

STUDENTS AND staff at King James I Academy in Bishop Auckland have raised £2018.00 to support 11 year old Academy student, Demi-Leigh Proud and her family, as they look to rebuild their home following a house fire just two weeks before Christmas.

The blaze, which was caused by a washing

machine fault, completely destroyed the family home in Crook, along with all personal belongings.

All members of the family escaped unhurt and Ms Proud and her children are now settling into their new home.

On hearing the news, staff at the Academy launched a support initiative to ease the immediate difficulties

faced by the family.Donations of uniform,

clothing and essential items were received, along with Christmas gifts to replace those lost in the fire.

The cash total, which was raised in just two weeks, was presented to Demi-Leigh’s Mum, Natalie Proud by Nick Grieveson, Head Teacher at the Academy.

He said: “Despite this dreadful experience, Demi-Leigh was up-beat and back in school within days; she has demonstrated a level of resilience that is an inspiration to us all.

We hope this money will show the family how much we care, and that it will help to make life a little easier as they begin a new year in their new home.”

More than 60 graduates of the course recently completed their first park run at Chester-le-Street Riverside Park.

The runners had attended Couch to 5K sessions in Durham City, Pity Me, Leadgate and Stanley.

Susan joined The Eden in 1980 as a conductress, and became a driver when the company finally turned over to One Man Operations.

After a brief spell at United’s Grange Road Head Office as clerical assistant, she returned to driving, initially part time on schools and then full time on the Asda shopper

WITH SOME of the teams playing Christmas tournaments, it was the St Mary’s U13 Kings who came on top in one of them staying unbeaten and winning the cup final.

The U7 Kings lost in a close cup match against Heighington But the U8 Kings came back from 3-0 down to win with goals from Cooper Batley (3), Joe Petch (2), Harry Graydon and Bobby Ebdon.

The U9 Aces had a great win away at Leven with goals from Luca McMahon (4) and Jay Grant.

The U9 Kings had an exciting 2-2 draw with Greatham with goals from Isaac Chambers and Jake Wilkinson.

The U10 Aces also had a great win against Barnard Castle with

goals from Jack Dale and Bradley Currie.

The U10 Kings had another fantastic win away at Stockton with goals from McKenzie Kirtley (4), Mason Wright and Dominic McWilliam.

The U11 Kings also started the year off well with a 6-0 win over Stockton with goals from Dan Walton (2), James Whales, Cobie Woods, Noah Fawcett and Ben Crinion.

The U14 Aces kept up their fantastic form with an 8-3 win against Darlington TSC with goals from Callum Watkinson (2), Kai Dobson, Robbie Vickers, Luke Savage and Ben Connor.

The U16 Aces also had a fantastic result in the County Cup quarter finals with a win on

penalties after extra time. Goalkeeper, Taylor Bell proved the hero.

The U18s remain unbeaten in the league with a very exciting 5-5 draw against Newton Aycliffe.

It was also a good couple of weeks for the U23 team, winning two league games, against Wolviston and previously unbeaten Peterlee, to go top of the Durham FA U23 league with goals from Charlie Wigley, Bailey Prudhoe, Rhys Porter, Steven Taylor, Aidan Hart, Jordan Lee, Kai Waters and Kieran Alderson.

With 18 games scheduled, it should be another exciting weekend of football coming up.

ST MARY’S JUNIORS ROUND UP

A COUPLE from Newton Aycliffe have organised the first wedding fair for Bishop Auckland Rugby Union Club.

Dan Lewis and Donna Bell have managed the rugby club for over three years. Within this time they have overseen a modernisation programme, overhauling the clubs main function room and have reignited the club’s events and functions calendar.

This year, the ambitious pair will host the first wedding fair for the club in the hope of attracting local couples to take a look at what the affordable venue can offer.

Donna, events manager, said: “Our wedding bookings have exceeded previous years. We are becoming a modern, flexible and affordable

local option for couples from not only Bishop Auckland and surrounding areas, but also Ferryhill and Newton Aycliffe.

“The fair is an opportunity for those planning their big day to see how our function room can look and how we can make use of our outside space. We have a number of local suppliers also lined up on the day to help with all those extra touches to make your day special.”

The event will take place on Saturday 3rd February at 11am – 4pm, visitors will receive a glass of prosecco and a welcome pack on arrival.
