Reminder: Mass Time Changes

During the Spring, the parish did a survey and Fr. Jim announced a new Mass schedule. As a re-sponse to many requests, some of the Mass times will change the weekend after Labor Day.Beginning Saturday, September 10, the Vigil will be at 4:30PM. The Masses on Sunday morning will remain the same, but a 5:30PM Mass will be added on Sunday evenings beginning that week-end.We are also adding a 12:15PM Mass on Holydays beginning with the Feast of the Assumption on August 15. Since the Feast is before Labor Day, the evening Mass will still be at 5:30PM after La-bor Day, future Holyday evening Masses will be celebrated at 7:00PM instead.

Repairs to the Heating System

It’s hard to believe in this Summer heat that cool-er days are just around the corner! In the coming weeks, the Facilities Department will be working with our HVAC contractors to schedule repairs to the heating system for the Church. The piping in the Boiler Room for the hydronic heating system is corroded. It will be replaced before the heating season begins this Fall.

Dear Families,

Each morning by email I receive a “morning offer-ing.” It contains a short prayer and reflection, usu-ally from a saint. I find that it is an easy way to connect with the Lord and start my busy day off right. A recent offering was from St. Vincent de Paul which quoted him stating, “Make it a practice to judge persons and things in the most favorable light at all times and under all circumstances.” It has been a helpful to keep in my mind since that day, in order to make an effort to put it into prac-tice. The next time I am put in a position to be quick to judge, I will try to bite my tongue and as-sume the best. After all, wouldn't I want others to do the same for me and others that I care about?

11 Cents: Renewed Surrender

Throughout the history of Christianity, there have been groups that have wanted to claim that after Baptism and a profession of faith in Jesus, we are free to do whatever we want. These people would even commit what would be considered serious sins but claim innocence because they had this “one and done” view of faith. As Catholics, we have absolution of our venial sins during every Mass, and we promote regular visits to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We also believe that we are pilgrims on a journey, who are not yet actually home. One reason that we need to reconcile ourselves to God regularly is that we take back our trust from God in so many small ways. We reject God in little ways by not making more time for prayer or not making God a true priority in our life. We act ac-cording to “our will” and not the “will of the Father.” We might find ourselves choose worry over trust or obsessive thinking over surrender to God’s providence. We overcome these shortcomings by disciplined good habits to keep us on the right track and reg-ular recommitments of ourselves to God.A great resource for learning how to live a holy life is St. Francis de Sales’ book, Introduction to the Devout Life. Near the end of the book there is in-struction on how to renew our commitment to God through a series of considerations here is part the first one:“Consider how noble and excellent a thing your soul is, endowed with understanding, capable of knowing, not merely this visible world around us, but Angels and Paradise, of knowing that there is an AllMighty, AllMerciful, Ineffable God; of know-ing that eternity lies before you…Yet more; your soul is possessed of a noble will, capable of loving God, irresistibly drawn to that love; your heart is full of generous enthusiasm, and can no more find rest in any earthly creation, or in anything at all except God.”

Liturgy Corner

In reconciling us to God, the Sacrament of Confes-sion is a great source of grace, and we are encour-aged to take advantage of it often. It is also the subject of many common misunderstandings, both among nonCatholics and among Catholics them-selves. Breathing on his disciples following his res-urrection, Jesus said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.”As Catholics we also recognize that the Sacra-ments are an outward sign of an inward grace. In this case, the outward sign is the absolution, or for-giveness of sins, that the priest grants to the per-son confessing sins; the inward grace is the recon-ciliation of the penitent to God. That is why the Sacrament of Confession is sometimes called the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Whereas Confession stresses the action of the believer in the Sacra-ment, Reconciliation stresses the action of God, who uses the Sacrament to reconcile us to Himself by restoring sanctifying grace in our souls. The way to break away from cyclic sinful habits is to acknowledge our sins, to repent of them, and to ask God’s forgiveness. NonCatholics, and even many Catholics, often ask whether they can con-fess their sins directly to God, and whether God can forgive them without going through a priest. On the most basic level, of course, the answer is yes, and Catholics should make frequent Acts of Contri-tion, which are prayers in which we tell God that we are sorry for our sins and ask for His for-giveness.I do suspect that this question misses the point of the Sacrament of Confession which, by its very na-ture, confers graces that help us to live a Christian life. One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had here at Saints Peter and Paul Parish has been seeing so many of our parishioners receiving this Sacrament during our “Reconciliation Weekends.” It was my hope that by more conveniently schedul-ing Confession in conjunction with our weekend Masses that more of us would be able to take ad-vantage of these opportunities. I was actually sur-prised by the long lines after every Mass! Thank you all so much for responding to the invitation to receive God’s grace. Let’s do that again soon!

The Big Idea

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches about the neces-sity of being prepared for his Second Coming. He tells us that when this happens, there will be two groups of people: the prepared and the unpre-pared. One will be rewarded and the other will be punished. There are several ways in which we can help ourselves to be prepared for Jesus” arrival. By reconciling and making peace with others, getting back to regular Mass attendance, making a funda-mental commitment to Jesus Christ, or serving the poor and neglected, we can assure ourselves that we will be ready and rewarded.
