May the peace of Christ be with you, Please pray for me during this upcoming week and a half as I will be on a silent retreat for 8 days. I will also keep you all in my prayers. We are approaching the season of Lent, which is 40 days before Easter and corresponds to the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert after being baptized. The number 40 occurs quite frequently in the Bible, especially as a period of time of purification and fasting. The earth was purified by the flood for 40 days in Genesis 7, Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai before receiving the 10 Commandments, Elijah traveled for forty days to reach Mount Carmel, and King David reigned for 40 years over Israel. Jesus spent 40 days between his Resurrection and Ascension into heaven, and there was a period of 40 years between the Public Ministry of Jesus and the Destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.
In the early Church the catechumens or those preparing to be received into the Church at Easter time went through a process of purification from sin, and at a later time this was extended to all Catholics as a renewal of the purification from sin in preparation for the renewal of baptism and life of grace at Easter. Because of this important process the Church asks all Catholics to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year, preferably during the season of Lent and to receive Communion at least once a year, during the Easter season. We are required to attend Mass every Sunday but it is not necessary to receive Communion every time, in fact it might be better to refrain from Communion if we are not prepared, such as if we are aware of grave sin, or if we have not been reconciled with our brothers or sisters.
Ash Wednesday (February 26) and Good Friday (March 10) are days of fasting and abstaining from meat. Fasting is required for those between ages 18-60 and consists of only one large meal, with no snacks between meals. Abstaining from meat is for those over 14 and includes all Fridays during Lent. The reason we abstain from meat, or flesh on Fridays, is because Jesus gave up his flesh for us (died on the cross) on a Friday. All Christians, not just Catholics, are called to fast as Jesus reminds us that by fasting we become aware of our hunger for the true bread that comes from God. “The days will come when the bridegroom (Jesus) is taken away from them, and then they will fast” (Matthew 9:15). During Lent this year, perhaps we can too fast from judgment of others, critical thoughts, words of gossip, talking about the faults of others or running them down, and forming factions, divisions and rivalries. Instead we can say only the good things that others need to hear, to
build them up. We can forgive those who have harmed us, or whom we believe have harmed us, or who did not meet our expectations or unspoken idealized thoughts. The most difficult person to forgive often is ourselves, so we can pray for the grace to let go of anger or resentment toward ourselves, or thinking, “I should have known better.”
In next Sunday’s gospel, we have the continuation of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus teaches about retaliation and revenge, being asked to do something we resent, and loving our enemies. This teaching is not just for those in religious life, but for all Christians, and it is only possible with the grace of the Holy Spirit. The cycle of violence continues if we believe that there must be vengeance for every act of evil done. The only way there can be peace is if someone is first to stop the act of violence by forgiving. Jesus did this on the cross as he accepted to himself the suffering due to all sins of the world, and then said, “Father, forgive them.” To be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect means to be as merciful as he is, to be quick to forgive and to show kindness and love to those who have been good to us and to those who have done bad to us. How can we receive God the Father’s mercy if we are not willing to be merciful to others? God Bless you,
Fr. Andrew Beerman

Physician Assisted Suicide myth: Even if I wouldn’t engage
physician assisted suicide, it should be legal so to honor other
people’s decisions.
Truth: When we see people put themselves in great harm, we
do everything we can to prevent it. Additionally, the
legalization of PAS has an impact far beyond one person and
his/her life. It impacts insurance decisions, conscience
protections for doctors and pharmacists, and can cover up elder
abuse.
Catholic compassion: We can love others and not agree with
their choices. It’s always challenging. But it isn’t as hard as
living with being complicit in another person’s death. Pray
hard, tell people you are there for them, and be that bridge to
dying well for another person.
Catholic Charities Adoption Program: Have you always
wanted a family? Have you been thinking about adoption
but not sure where to start? Call Catholic Charities to
schedule an adoption information meeting to learn about
different types of adoption, the process, and how to begin.

information.
Looking for some quiet time to pray for our priests? Please consider joining our St. Mary’s/St. Peter and Paul
Seven Sisters groups that are growing within our
parishes. The commitment is one Holy Hour a week, you
and Jesus. You pick the time, and you pick the day. We
are also looking for substitutes when another sister needs
someone to fill in for her hour. Please contact Lola
Baxter at ([email protected]) for more
information. Brochures and booklets are available from
Lola, and you can check us out online at
http://www.sevensistersapostolate.org/ . The Seven
Sisters Apostolate started in St. Paul, MN in 2011 with 7
groups of 7 women praying for their pastors. As of this
year, the Apostolate has grown to almost 1400 groups all
over the world, women praying for their priests, retired
priests, and bishops. Won’t you join us? The rewards will
be eternal.
St. Mary’s is in need of collection counters. Please call
