At long last the sale of Grasso Field has been completed. While the initial offer from the buyer, Budrovich Company, had been for $1,737,000, the final price ended up at $1,570,000. This drop in price came from unsatisfying results

following inspections of the soil. It seems that before that area became ball fields it was a dumping ground for unused or unwanted construction material, e.g., broken cinder blocks. Dirt was thrown over this refuse and that was okay for playing baseball or soccer but not for building houses. The resulting necessity of removing these obstacles caused a greater expense for Budrovich and a lesser profit for us. Nevertheless, the $1.57 million exceeds the $1.5 million assessment made by St. Louis County so I’m happy to have the extra money.

Part of this money is already gone. St. Mark’s has been in debt to the archdiocese since we built the Parish Center in 2010. At that time we had run a combined capital campaign to raise funds for the gymnasium and Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. We knew then that the money collected for these two things would leave us short but we also knew we had the sale of Grasso Field on the horizon. By a contract we had with the Grasso family we could not sell the field until July 1, 2017. Our intention back in 2010 was to borrow money from the diocese to build the gym and then use the resulting profit from the field sale to pay off the remainder of our debts.

That’s what we have done now. Our debts to the archdiocese included $539,795 for the gymnasium and $200,000 still owed to the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary campaign. When it was decided in 2014 that our parish would vacate the property at 8300 Morganford Archbishop Carlson promised to forgive $300,000 of our Parish Center loan. So the resulting balance of $439,795 for the gym and the seminary is now gone. I am happy that our parish is debt-free.

My hope is that once we have finished paying for the renovation of our current church and parish office that we will have around $200,000 to put in the bank. Bills are still coming in for this project (I just signed today a pay voucher for $75,000). I am glad that this project is nearing completion, too, and I hope to get back for us a couple thousand dollars after we clear up some minor disputes over mistakes that were made during construction.

We’ll be on our own after these things are finished. No longer can I look at our financial picture with the assurance that $200,000 is waiting to be deposited into our account. Furthermore, our parish cannot continue living off a six-figure donation that we received a few years ago from a kind donor’s will. That money is nearly gone. Finally, St. Mark’s has seen an increase in our utility bills after the expansion of the church and the new occupancy of the parish offices, formerly the convent. Our electricity bill each month for all of our buildings (church/school, gym, offices, rectory) is around $6,000. These added costs worry me.

Thus, I ask you to increase your donation to St. Mark’s. I know some of you are heroic in what you give and your weekly sacrifice is much appreciated. I know some of you barely sacrifice at all. I urge you to look into your heart and ask God if more is expected of you. Remember the words of Jesus, “Much will be expected of the person entrusted with much.” —Lk. 12:48. Our God has been very generous with all of us. This cannot be denied. Let us pray that we will be generous in return. A few extra dollars placed in the collection each week will help your parish meet its financial needs. Please ask the Lord for His guidance. May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

Little Sisters of the Poor

The Little Sisters of the Poor, who have been welcoming aged poor persons and sharing their lives with them within our Archdiocese for over 140 years, will be visiting our parish Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd to speak of their mission within the Church, and to ask our help. Their Home, in North St. Louis, currently serves 115 needy elderly persons, age 65 or older, who are loved and cared for until death, so that they live in security and dignity. The heart of their mission is simply to provide a “Home”, so that those elderly, with whom the sisters joyfully share their lives, realize how much God loves them and wants them to be with Him forever in heaven. Throughout their history, the Little Sisters have depended on the collaboration of the laity to enable them to support their Residents and live their vocation. The Sisters will have envelopes in the pews and will briefly speak at Mass to ask your support. Please make checks payable to the Little Sisters of the Poor. Last summer, the Sisters announced that they will be leaving the Archdiocese after 148 years. They have no intention of doing so until they find the “right” people to continue their mission to the poor. For that reason, there is no date set for their departure. In the meantime, Archbishop Carlson understands that they must continue to beg in order to keep the “Home fires burning” so that the work continues.
