COMMON GOOD 2019
CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OLD IN 2019. Saint Mark has more than 15 young ladies who are doing a faith pro-
gram to celebrate their passage ritual, Quinceañera, this year. You see them with their families. We pray for
all our young people to grow in Wisdom, Faith, and Prudence.
SOUND SYSTEM: Few weeks ago, our sound system started to fail.
We called the Wireless McTernan company to fix the problem. We
need your feedback to keep improving the sound in our church. Talk
to Fr Carlos, leave him a message, or call the office. We appreciate
your feedback.
We had this new rack to protect our sound system. The microphone
system was update to a better one, Shure QLXD14. That is the name
of the brand of the microphone. We got SBX 12x6 Zone Processor, a
wall mounted Zone controller, 20A power sequencing, Cisco wireless
router and two days of hard work installing and testing this sound
system. The sound system is inside the sacristy!
Little by little , our church is adopting to out needs! Help us with your
feedback and with your financial support.
OUR FESTIVAL NEEDS A TEAM OF LEADERS! I really
need a group of leaders to help us to organize the
mini-festival our parish hold in June. We have a lot of
people ready to cook. The festival is for four hours on
Sunday. We collect from $5,000 to $ 8,000 dollars
for the parish. The festival helps all the cultures to
work together and have fun together. Please call Kris
Meeker, our business manager for more info.

For the month of February, the Human Concerns Committee has chosen THE SHALOM CEN-
TER as our charity. On Super Bowl Sunday, members of the Human Concerns Committee will
be in the back of church with bowls for our annual “SOUPER BOWL” collection. Please drop at
least ONE DOLLAR into the bowl to help pay for St. Mark's sponsorship of the Soup Kitchen at
the Shalom Center. On the 4th Wednesday of each month, St. Mark sponsors the meal by
providing soup ingredients, sandwiches and milk. Members of St Mark also help with serving
the meal. Anytime during the month, donations would be appreciated in the OUTREACH BOX
in the back of church. The Shalom Center “serves the community by providing emergency
food, shelter and support in ways that meet immediate needs and respects human dignity.”
The center is located at 4314 - 39thAvenue. To fulfill this mission, they need the help and sup-
port of the community. Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

During"today!s"second"reading,"St."Paul"states"that"the"best"gift"of"God"is" love." !This"kind"of" love"that"flows"to"us"from"God" is" creative" and" unmotivated." It" seeks" nothing" for"self."!It"is"not"just"attracted"by"goodness,"since"God"loves"us"all,"sinners"and"saints,"alike."Some"versions"of"scripture"use"the"word"�charity�"while"others"use"�love.�"The"word"charity"means" active" love." ! !Christian" actions" are" performed" with"active" love." If" you" are" kind" to" someone," it" is" because" you"love" the"person"as" another" human" created"by"God." If" you"are" feeding" the" hungry," or" driving" the" elderly" to" appoint-ments,"or"fostering"children,"such"charitable"acts"are"acts"of"love."Love" is"perfected"by"our"charitable"acts" towards"oth-ers.!

PROPHETS ALL One reason why our society finds it-self in such a confused state and sur-rounded by so many difficulties is that it has chosen to listen to its politicians rather than its prophets. This observa-tion includes “politicians” in its broad-est sense, and certainly is not limited to individuals in government service. A broad definition of a politician is anyone who tells people what they want to hear in order to gain their sup-port, while a prophet is someone who is willing to risk saying what people need to hear to gain their change of heart. Political promis-es rather than prophetic truths are always more popular. In today’s Gospel, Jesus has a choice. He could have been a suc-cessful politician by telling people what they wanted to hear. In-
stead, he chose to be prophetic by challeng-ing them to look at themselves, their values and their priorities. Walter Brueggemann, one of the most influential American Old Testa-ment scholars and theologians, has stated: “The task of a prophet is to nourish and evoke a consciousness and perception, which is alternative to the consciousness and perception of the dominant culture in which prophets find themselves.” In other words, prophets are not simply investigative report-
ers who seek out injustice and punish criminals, but guides, who force listeners to become aware of an alternative view which un-derstands, appreciates and evaluates reality according to the will of God. This alternative view becomes the guiding principle in the lives of believers so that injustice in all its forms is exposed for what it is, “not simply an affront to humans, but a contradiction of the truth and goodness, which is the essence of God.” Prophets offer an alternative view of reality that allow people to see their own history in the light of God’s call for justice. All too often a prophetic message falls on deaf ears or is reject-ed. Jesus’ prophetic message heard today received a mixed re-view from the listeners in his hometown. Some were impressed while many were angry. Jesus’ alternative view that salvation is a universal gift extended to all people, especially to sinners, was firmly rejected. Many were convinced that “Joseph’s son” had nothing to teach them nor was he able to open their eyes or touch their hearts. It is well for us to remember that this Gospel narra-tive is set before us today, not to prompt our criticism of his hometown friends and neighbors, but to challenge the quality of our openness to God’s world-view, however and through whomev-er it is revealed to us. Today we too must decide to listen either to politicians or to prophets. Prophets remind us that the Word of God can teach us who we are if we dare to see the world as God sees it. Prophets suffer because of the messages they deliver, and those who choose to follow those messages will also suffer. However, it is the prophetic voice that can put us in touch with the only viable alternative available to us when we face suffering, injustice and death.
