CONFIRMATION:

“Becoming True Witnesses of Christ”

This Sunday, 40 young people from St. Isaac Jogues and St. Martha Parishes will be “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.” The effects of Confirmation, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, help us to call upon God as “Father”, become closer to Christ and experience an increase in the gifts of the Spirit. Moreover, our ties with the Church become stronger. Through the Gift of the Holy Spirit we are empowered to spread and defend our faith by word and deed. This is what makes us true WITNESSES of Christ. Being a witness may conjure up different images. Consider being called to testify in a court of law. In fact, many Christians have done just that, and under the worst of circumstances! Fr. Faber’s popular hymn, “Faith of our Fathers” recalls the peril and rewards of testifying - - expressing our faith in Christ.

Faith of our fathers, living still In spite of dungeon, fire and sword: O how our hearts beat high with joy When e’er we hear that glorious word: Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death!

“True to thee till death” . . . As our young people receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, they will not only receive divine “gifts,” but an awesome human responsibility. It will be their duty to be faithful even when mocked and marginalized. Once just being a Christian was considered a crime! One Roman emperor decreed that “Christians not be.” Tyrants, through the ages, have followed suit. History demonstrates that the “Age of Martyrs” never ended. “Dungeon, fire and sword” are a recurring “holocaust.” Whether it be ancient Rome, 16th Century Japan or 20th Century Mexico, Nazi Germany or the former Soviet Union, the attack on innocent people because of their race, culture, or religious belief is an ongoing threat. Last Sunday, Pope Francis celebrated a Mass to commemorate the 1915 massacre of Armenian Christians in the Ottoman Empire. An estimated 1.5 million Armenians perished. In that context, the pope us the word “genocide.” Genocide is an ugly word. Essen-tially, it is racial extermination. Yes, it is an ugly word, but it accurately describes a horrible historical fact - - an unjust war on a people, their culture and religious beliefs. The centennial of the Armenian tragedy recalls similar offenses against the Assyrian, Chaldean ad Greek Christian minorities in the Ottoman Empire. The tragedy is not done. When we read the daily news about atrocities committed against Christians in the Mid-dle East, Africa, and parts of Asia, we need the “Faith of our Fathers” more than ever! Today, innocent Christians are shot, beheaded and crucified because they will not deny Christ! These are modern martyrs, heroes of the faith. As witnesses of Christ, our 40 Confirmands will need real courage and an unshakeable commitment to their faith in order to survive and transform a world that neither encourages virtue nor respects religious freedom. Let us pray that they will be inspired by the Holy Spirit to be prayerful, generous, and true - - models of Christian life. Our Lord warned that there would be trials for the Church in every age. May our young Confirmands use the “gifts” of the Spirit well . . . “to renew the face of the Earth.” -Fr. Luczak

AN EASTER PRAYER

Let us chant Alleluia! O blessed Alleluia of heaven! No more anguish, no more adversity. No

more enemy, no more love of destruction. Up above, praise to God, and here below, praise to God. Praise mingled with fear here, but without disturbance above. Here the one who chants must die, but there will live forever. Here we

chant in hope, there, in possession. Here it is Alleluia en route, there it is alleluia on arriving

home. Amen. -St. Augustine

Golf Road Construction Project

Please be advised the Golf Road construction project is scheduled to

continue through August 2015. As an alternate route to St. Isaac

Jogues we suggest taking Washington St. to Foster Ln. and entering the parking lot from the

south in order to avoid the Golf Rd. construction.

SAVORING THE EXPERIENCE One of the wonderful things about vacations is the time we spend two or three weeks afterward savoring the experience, sharing vacation photos and memories with our family and friends. This kind of reflection puts us back in touch with the orig-inal experience and reminds us of the relaxation and wonder the vacation afforded us. Today, on the Third Sunday of Easter, the Church blesses us with reminders of what we celebrated two Sundays ago. All three readings are reflections on the meaning of the death and resurrection of Christ. One of the threads run-ning through these reflections is that the purpose of the Lord’s suffering, death, and resurrection was to save us, to forgive our sins. We are given fifty days to ponder this reality—fifty days to savor the experience of Christ’s dying and rising for us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
