Let’s celebrate Water and Stewardship Sunday, April 24th

“The Lord God put the man in the garden of Eden to care for it and to work it” (Gen. 2:15)

In 1955, the National Association of Conservation Districts be-

gan a national program to encourage Americans to focus on

Stewardship. Stewardship Week is officially celebrated from the

last Sunday in April to the first Sunday in May. It is one of the world’s largest conserva-

tion-related observances.

For Lutherans the Stewardship concept is deeply rooted in the Biblical mandate to be

“Care-Takers of God’s planet.” It involves personal and social responsibility, including

a duty to learn about and improve natural resources as we use them wisely, leaving a

rich legacy for future generations.

I have numerous good friends who acknowledge that climate change is a problem but

claim that it is just too expensive to do anything about it. Preserving the atmosphere

that will allow our children to enjoy life on the only planet in the universe that we know

contains life is too expensive? What an odd level of priorities that is. To me, even if

one has doubts, an issue like the fast climate change is one where it is far better to err

on the side of caution than to simply let it all go with possibly devastating results. In

that sense I would rather that our great grandchildren look back on today’s genera-

tions as the heroes who began easing our planet’s climate transformation to a halt as

opposed to reviling us for continuing to mess it up so badly that they live more difficult

lives on a harsher planet with less food and less beauty, hiding from more violent

weather and being exposed to more international conflicts.

No matter where you stand on that issue of climate change I’d like to invite you to join

us to celebrate our world-wide conservation observance of our natural resources.

God’s blessings,

Pastor Dirk

APRIL MISSION OF THE MONTHAPRIL MISSION OF THE MONTHAPRIL MISSION OF THE MONTHAPRIL MISSION OF THE MONTH

The Gathering

The Gathering is a community mission which fulfills Jesus’ words to His disciples in His teachings from the Mount of Olives: Matthew 25:35 "For I was Hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. . . ".

Since 2004, the Gathering has been feeding and nourishing body and soul of anyone who needs a meal and warm hospitality for a time. Initially the Gathering, which is hosted by First United Methodist Church, wel-comed people twice a month. The numbers served at the first meals were in the 30's, and today on a weekly basis there are about 120 individuals who come to the Gathering for a meal "to nourish body and for fellow-ship to feed the soul." The Gathering is staffed week by week by civic, business, youth, and a wide variety of groups from the area who are dedicated to the care of others in our community. The Gathering became a weekly service to those desiring to share a meal in 2011.

Trinity has been an integral part of this feeding ministry in the Madison community, and our church will have an opportunity to help serve a meal on May 16, 2016. Help will be needed to set up the dining area, welcome and dish up the food for the guests, fellowship during the meal and clean up the dishes and the dining area when the meal is complete. The meal is served from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. This requires approximately 9-12 vol-unteers from our congregation. A sign-up sheet will be available in the weeks prior to the serving event. Any donations collected through the mission of the Month in April will be used to help defray the cost of providing a meal for our service time on May 16, 2016. Please consider a financial gift and in May giving of your time and service to others.

For questions, or to sign up, to help call the church office at 256-2771 or Ann Marie Rossing at 256-3851.

As students move through their school year, it is important that they learn study skills. Kids look to us to teach effective methods for studying: the techniques that will help them deeply understand and retain information, distill complex ideas and feel confident come test day. Want to improve your kids’ study skills? Work on these suggestions, and you’ll be well on the way. Here are some simple tips to share with your child for building the good study skills that can lead to great grades.

1. Planners are a sanity saver. Time management is tricky for everyone, especially kids and teens. Having major deadlines, due dates, events, and extra-curricular activities in one place helps kids visualize their week, manage their time, and stay on track.

2. Breaking down is a good thing. There is nothing worse than not knowing where to start when it comes to schoolwork. Understanding how to break daunting projects into more manageable ones is a key skill. For example, make studying for a giant math final approachable by making a list of all the concepts included in the test and review them one at a time.

3. Organization isn’t overrated. Keeping notes, projects, and reading materials in logical order helps kids find what they need right away, cutting down on time spent tracking things down and upping time spent actual-ly studying.

4. Taking good notes matters. It helps keep kids’ grades up, especially in middle or high school. 5. Study slow and steady. The best way for kids to do well on tests is to review the information daily at

home. Having children work with friends to study or in small groups outside of school is a great way to en-courage this.

6. Getting homework done thoughtfully and on time is one of the most fundamental study skills. 7. Encouraging kids to listen carefully and spend plenty of time reading directions really helps. Also make

sure they know it’s OK to speak up if they don’t understand testing directions. 8. Come up with some cool “rewards” with your kids—extra time with you, a favorite treat, later curfew—to

let them know you recognize their efforts. Support and encourage them. Keep your sense of humor. “Compliments of the Madison Faith Community Nursing Task Force”

ST. DYSMAS WORSHIP OPPORTUNITYST. DYSMAS WORSHIP OPPORTUNITYST. DYSMAS WORSHIP OPPORTUNITYST. DYSMAS WORSHIP OPPORTUNITY

One of the ministries that are supported by the generosity of the members of Trinity Lutheran Church is St. Dysmas which is a Lutheran congregation that is inside the South Dakota State Penitentiary and the mem-bers of the church are inmates. The name St. Dysmas is the legendary name that was given to the thief on the cross who in Luke 23:42 asked Jesus to, “. . . remember me when you come into your kingdom.” St. Dysmas celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. At least once a year, members from Trinity attend worship in the penitentiary. Twelve guests are invited to attend from different congregations throughout the year. The worship opportunity at St. Dysmas is a privilege we would encourage you to share. The inmate choir, the music, the sharing of the peace, and the brief time for fellowship all comes with gratitude from the inmates we worship alongside. The men are so appreciative of the time spent and shared with them. Many in the prison have no visitors and the opportunity to talk with and worship alongside someone is a most welcome gift. Those who attend always report that we receive so much more than we could hope to give by our presence at that prison worship. We leave the worship filled with joy given by the Holy Spirit and the heartfelt thanks ex-pressed by the inmates for our presence. Sometimes people are reluctant to attend for fear of their own safety. Be assured that the worship experience is safe. Those who volunteer to attend will complete a Department of Corrections clearance and a waiver. You must be at least 18 years of age. Often there is opportunity to ride with others traveling to Sioux Falls for the worship. Attendees arrive no later than 6:00 pm and the worship is generally over 7:30-8:00pm. There is an opportunity to have coffee with Pastor Bob Chell and talk about the ministry and your experience after the worship if desired. The next scheduled date for Trinity to attend the worship is May 5, 2016 and we will attend again on Septem-ber 29, 2016 if you are unable to attend in May. If you are interested in attending the spring worship op-portunity, please contact Ann Marie Rossing (605)256-3851 or call the church office (605)256-2771. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus tells us, “. . . whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did it unto me.” Those in prison are among those Jesus named as “the least of these.” They were considered to be the “forgotten fifth” by Pastor Leroy Iseminger because we do not see them or think of them. I encourage you to consider visiting the prison and worship with the “family” of St. Dysmas.

March 8, 2016 8:00 P.M.

President Beth Delzer called the Trinity Lutheran Church council meeting to order by asking members to re-cite our mission statement: “Sharing God’s Word, Doing God’s Work.” Council members absent and excused were: Nancy Sabbe; Ann Marie and David Rossing; and Adam Shaw. Keith Knutson led our devotions and he read from I Corinthians 12:4-6. He said our common good is spread-ing the Gospel. President Delzer presented the agenda and asked for a motion to approve; Stacy Krusemark made the mo-tion and Amy Townsend seconded. Motion passed. The council minutes were presented from February 9, 2016 by President Delzer. She asked for a motion to approve; Mike Brooke made the motion and Roger Olson seconded. Motion passed. Pastor Constanze presented the Educational Moment by handing out a sheet for the council about Trinity Lu-theran’s Organization Chart. Motion carried. President Tom Rook thanked everyone for the honor to be President and their trust, faith, and support during his presi-dency of Trinity Lutheran. He said it takes a group to work together to accomplish our missions. He thanked the boards and said it gives him a new appreciation of what goes into each board and their responsibilities. He thanked the trustees and trustee chair, Jody Bergheim, for handling all the funds, the board of Parish Education and Parish Education chair, Jennifer Briggs, for all they do for our youth, the board of Deacons and Deacon chair, Sandy Cole, for putting our church services together. He expressed thanks to our treasurer Katie Nelson and to Keith Knutson, a member of the finance committee for their advisory function. He also thanked Marlys Schmidt for keeping our church organized and Dave Reed for the fine job in maintaining the building. He also extended a thank you to Vice President Beth Delzer for her support. God is Calling.” Pastor Constanze reported all bills are paid and we met our expenses with $14,800.00 surplus. She was thankful for many things this past year. She stated that she has been thankful for their new baby, Emma, and for the council and the church staff for letting her work on a flexible schedule. She reported that the screens are up in the narthex which is a good exposure to multimedia within our church family. She pointed out that the increased use of social media like Face-book and YouTube spreads Trinity beyond our walls. She is thankful for the many new members we have welcomed this past year. It was difficult to say goodbye to Jane Schubert, who was our receptionist and moved to Mitchell, and to our organist, Colleen Tucker, who retired and is traveling in Europe. “Tour of Italy”

Thanks to all who attended the “Tour of Italy” Dinner fundraiser. We had a fun time decorating, preparing, and serving you. We thank you for your support and generosity in making the dinner a success. We look forward to serving you again.

“Tool Tree”

Be on the lookout for our "Tool Tree". As part of our summer mission trip, we are responsible for taking with us some of the tools we will need to complete our projects…and there are a lot of them on the list! We are reaching out to our Trinity family to help us acquire these tools and supplies. They do not have to be new and we plan to return the tools when we return if you desire. Please keep an eye in the narthex for the tool tree (ladder) with information on this vital part of our ministry.
