KING MTESA of Uganda, in Equatorial Africa, had allowed the White Fathers to preach the Faith in his country with some good results. However, when his successor, King Mwanga, assumed power in 1885, he initiated a fierce persecution against “all those who pray,” that is, all Catholics.

Among the victims of this persecution were the elite of the Ugandan youth—Charles Lwanga, the chief of the royal pages, and twenty-one of his companions. As their leader, Charles exhorted them by his words and left them an example by his death—since he was the first to be burned alive. Twelve others followed him on that same day, June 3, 1886; the rest were killed be-tween May 26, 1886, and January 27, 1887.

These martyrs of Christ were beatified in 1920 and canonized in 1964 by Paul VI who declared: “These African martyrs inaugu-rate a new age, Africa is rising free and redeemed, bathed in their blood. Christianity has found a ready hearing in Africa, and we see this as a mysterious plan of God, a vocation proper to Africa, and a promise of historical significance. Africa is the new country of Christ. A clear witness of this fact is the direct simplicity and unshakable fidelity of these young African Christians.”

PRAYER God, You made the blood of martyrs become the seed of Christians. May the field of Your Church, irrigated by the Blood of St. Charles and his Companions, always produce rich harvests. Amen.

May 24, 2020 The Ascention of the Lord

My dear parishioners,

Today we celebrate what is called “the Birthday of the Church.” 50 days after His Holy Resurrection and 10 days following

His Holy Ascension into Heaven the promise of the Lord Jesus was fulfilled with the descent of the Holy Spirit. Acts of the

Apostles tells us that praying in the Upper Room on that Sunday morning were the Apostles, the Mother of God and Ever Virgin Mary, along with about 100 other women and men disciples of Jesus. The coming of the Holy Spirit filled them with

charismatic gifts which empowered them to witness to the Name of Jesus. Fearlessly they emerged from the sheltered Upper

Room to embrace a world redeemed by Christ. They were sent by Him to announce the Good News of salvation to all people.

We have been reading during these Easter days of the growth of the Church and how the followers of Jesus were able to over-

come the challenges which they encountered.

This same Holy Spirit which came upon these disciples nearly 2,000 years ago today is present with us now. God the Holy

Spirit is the One who enables us to stand firm in faith when persecution arrives. He is the One who provides us with the words

we need to refute falsehood. He is the One who provides us with the courage to live our lives differently from others who do

not know Christ. He is the One who gifts us with peace and joy as we lift our hearts in prayer. God the Holy Spirit was given

to us at Baptism and we were sealed with His gifts at Confirmation. The Holy Spirit is GOD WITH US!

Today the Easter season comes to a close. This was a very strange Easter for us this year not having the opportunity to attend

the Divine Liturgy in our church. We also missed Holy Week of the Lord’s Passion due to the Corona Virus. Thank God we were able to experience some graces by participating in the liturgy via live-streaming. Next year, please God, we will be pre-

sent in our church to participate in the liturgies which recall the events of our salvation.

As we know Easter is a weekly observance on the Lord’s Day, that is to say SUNDAY. We gather every 8 th day on the 1st day

of the week to remember and celebrate the victory the Crucified Jesus won for us by His Holy Resurrection. Coming to

church every Sunday is to relive the joy of Easter. It’s a day we cannot ignore nor make an excuse to dismiss.

COME HOLY SPIRIT AND FILL THE HEARTS OF YOUR FAITHFUL – ALLELUIA!

Father Zig
