SIXTEETH SUDAY I ORDIARY TIME JULY 20, 2014
Dear Parishioners,
On July 11 we celebrated the feast of St. Benedict. On July 16 we celebrated
the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Both of these feasts highlight the gift of the
monastic vocation in the Church. Benedict, at one time a student in Rome, was
troubled by the decadence he found in the city, especially among his fellow
students. He withdrew to a town in the mountains to separate himself from the
temptations. Though he wanted to live in solitude, followers gathered around him
and eventually led to the founding of his order and his rule of discipline. Several
hundreds of years later a group of hermits established themselves on Mt. Carmel in
the Holy Land. They devoted themselves to Mary whom they saw as a model of
contemplation. They allowed her example to guide them in seeking a life of
closeness to the Lord.
Only a few are called to such a dedicated monastic life but we can all learn from
their example. We all need to examine the culture and world around us to identify
those attitudes and behaviors that draw us away from Christ and seek after those
which draw us closer to him. While we are called to live in the midst of our
modern world rather than escape it, to give example to those around us rather than
abandon them, we can all learn to devote ourselves to what unites us to the Lord
and avoid what leads us away
