Parish Enrichments Fides Quarens Intellectum: Faith Seeking Understanding

On Wednesday, April 19 at 6:00 pm, we will have our last Faith Enrichment session on apologetics. This month we will be focus-ing on the reasons why we do what we do at Mass. Have you ever been asked why we stand when we do, or, why we kneel when we do at different times throughout the Mass? Why do priests and deacons kiss the altar before and after Mass? Why does Father wear what he does for Mass? Why do we make the sign of the cross on our foreheads, mouth, and heart before the Gospel is proclaimed? Why does Father break a little piece of the host and

place it in the chalice after the consecration? If you’ve ever wondered about any of these questions or why we do the things we do at Mass, please come to this session to have those questions answered!

For the duration of our time together, we will watch a video presentation by Fr. Mike Schmitz. Father Mike will take us from when the priest is preparing for Mass in the sacristy, to when we are dismissed from Mass and “sent forth” out into the world. If you missed any of our previous sessions, please do not let that prevent you from attending this session in April! All parishioners are welcome whether or not you have a child in faith formation, and childcare will be provided for ages 1-4! We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, April 19!

Thank you for your generous response to the Holy Land Collection which was held on Good Friday. Your donation helps maintain the holiest of shrines and provides charitable activities for the poorest of people in that area.

Garden Plot The church has a garden plot south of McCann Center. If any one is interested in a portion of the plot, contact Frank Campbell at 641-891-9119.

Cemetery Clean Up Bored with our bending and stretching exercise routine? Want to get out in the fresh air and still get your exercise? You’re invited to grab a gar-bage sack and head to Sacred Heart Cemetery where you can exercise all you want bending and stretching picking up plastic and silk flower petals throughout the cemetery. When done with that you may continue for a couple of days picking up branches which have fallen during the winter. Just place everything in or near the blue barrel. Or if you prefer join a group of us who will meet on April 20th at 6:00 PM. Thanks for your help and enjoy yourself.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

The Resurrection of the Lord – Easter Vigil

In tonight’s reading from Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans, we are reminded that we are alive in Christ. And it is not merely once a year that we re-member what Jesus did to give us this new life, for-giveness and peace. Every day good stewards re-member their baptism. They remember that they are united with Jesus in his death; that daily they drown the old sinful nature, and that daily they rise to their new life in Christ. Let us be mindful every day, especially when we are troubled by life or tempted by sin, that our lives are no longer about us, but about Christ’s active, loving presence within us. That is our baptism. Alleluia! He is risen!

Meditations for Holy Hour Visits in the Chapel

Life After Loss

“Everyone grieves in different ways. For some, it could

take longer or shorter. I do know it never disappears.

An ember still smolders inside me. Most days, I don’t

Why do Catholics teach Christ rose on the

third day? Given a Friday crucifixion and

Sunday’s resurrection, I barely count two

days.

There are a couple of issues to consider here. To begin with, Jesus’ resurrection from the dead was an event that hap-pened both in and out of time. Theologians say it was a transcendental event with histori-cal consequences. Because Jesus’ resurrection is not like anything we have ever seen before and bears little or no resemblance to any other historical event, our concepts of time falter when trying to express exactly what happened. To put it another way, the length of time that Jesus spent in the tomb is much less important than what he did there. What really matters is that he conquered death, va-cated the tomb, and entered into his risen and glorified state. We must also remember that the Jews of Jesus’ day were not as precise in their measurement of time as we are today. We tend to measure time in terms of hours, minutes, and seconds. They thought in terms of sunrises and sun-sets. When seen in this light, the typical explanation given to the three-day time frame of Jesus’ death and resurrection is that it took place in the course of three separate days: Good Friday (when Jesus was condemned to death and crucified), Holy Saturday (when Jesus lay in the tomb), and Easter (Sunday, when Jesus rose from the dead).

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s col-umn of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items. Perhaps you have never asked the question,” Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead”?. Carl Olson, who read his way into the Catholic church observed this question so frequently by agnos-tic authors of popular books and TV pro-grams he decided to answer it from a Catholic perspective. These doubters I believe the resurrection of Je-sus should not be accepted by any reasonable person. They say, ”Wasn’t this just a spiritual happening or just a myth?” In an engaging ques-tions and answer format, Olson first asks “Why is it important whether Jesus rose from the dead—especially since it is all a matter of faith?” He gives his answer in a simple systematic way. You will get not just an answer to this and other questions but a deeper insight into God’s plan for our salvation and Christ’s role in it when you

read Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead?.

Acts 10:34a, 37–43, Col 3:1–4 or 1 Cor 5:6b–8, Jn 20:1–9 or Mt 28:1–10

Today we celebrate the most important mystery of our faith, the greatest event in the Bible and all of his-tory. Nothing before the events of Easter morning contains their full meaning, and nothing after makes sense without them. Jesus’ conquering of death validated all of his preaching, teaching, and miracles. Now his doctrine of love, forgiveness, faith, and baptism is confirmed, as is God’s definitive revelation for man’s salvation. In short, the resurrection proves that Jesus wasn’t simply a good man, a wise teacher, or a revolutionary. He was all those things and more—he was the Son of God. Without Jesus’ rising from the dead, you cannot explain his appearing to the women, apostles, disciples, and crowds before his ascension. You cannot explain the transformation of the timid and baffled apostles into powerful preachers or the conversion of St. Paul from a murdering Pharisee to a persecuted Christian. Without the truth of the resurrection, you cannot explain the courage of any of the martyrs. Indeed, the Romans and Jews

took these martyrs seriously. And if either group could have produced a body of evi-dence or a convincing explanation to debunk the story, they would have. So today, set aside your Lenten focus on the mocked, beaten, and buried Je-sus. Celebrate the resurrection. Christ the Lord—and Christianity—is a reality and a force. Rejoice! Reflect on the truth and power of this day, and allow God’s Son to open the tombs of your heart and life.

For Reflection The resurrection changes everything. How does it change my life? If you re-corded your whole day, would there be enough evidence that you believe in the resur-rection?
