Encounter Our Neighbors We encounter Jesus this week in Jerusa-lem, a community he knew well. We prayerfully enter into our own communi-ties too, encountering those who are hun-gry and thirsty, and others who need our help. How does our Lenten journey mo-tivate us to serve those we meet in our daily lives? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.

Encounter Our

Neighbors You are born with breadfruit, you grow up with breadfruit and you die with breadfruit. This popular saying from the Mi-cronesian island of Chuuk, thousands of miles off the coast of Hawaii, captures the importance of this starchy fruit. It’s a staple both for the Chuukese living in Micronesia, and for people like Micaela, who were forced to migrate to Hawaii due to a changing climate and rising seas.

Though Micaela moved to Hawaii seeking a better life, she instead found a community of Chuukese struggling with hunger. Through the One ‘Ohana: Food and Housing for All program, Micaela organizes groups of women to learn farming techniques. To-gether, they gain the knowledge to plant breadfruit trees and feed their communities.

For Micaela, the project is a way to look to the future while re-membering the past. “It’s been many years since I dug my hands in the ground. We are reconnecting back to our home, even though it’s not the soil from where we came from,” she says.

If you didn’t receive a Rice Bowl, they are available in the Gathering space. There will be suggestions each weekend on how you might make deposits in your rice bowl. This can be a nice family event, discussing the importance of the rice bowl, hunger, social justice, and how a family can together embark

on activities to raise some money for the

hungry poor in the world.

The Easter Bunny Needs Help!! An Easter Egg Hunt will be held Easter Morning after the 11:00 AM Mass. We would greatly appreciate donations of individually wrapped candy and plastic eggs to fill. There is a box located in t h e Gathering Space for your donations or they may be left in the parish office by Monday, April 10th. Thanks! — Family Life Commission

SAVE THE DATE The dates of the annual plant sale sponsored by the Social Action Commission have been changed to May 6-7. This is the weekend before Mother’s Day.

Holy Week

Passion of the Lord Saturday, April 8th at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 9th at 9:00 a.m. On this day the Church celebrates Christ's entrance into Jerusalem to a accomplish his paschal mystery. We gather to hear the story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. We bless palm branches and carry them in procession to the church as we cry "Hosanna". Then

we hear the account of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Holy Thursday April 13th, 7 p.m. Mass The Mass of the Lord's Supper begins the Triduum, the three holiest days of the liturgical year. During this special liturgy the sacred oils received at the Chrism Mass in Davenport are presented to the faith community to be used throughout the coming year, feet are washed, the Eucharist is transferred to a place of adoration in the chapel of ease, and the altar of sacrifice is stripped in preparation for Good Friday.

Good Friday April 14th, 7 p.m. Celebration of the Lord's Passion Good Friday is the most somber day of the Church year. The altar is bare. We come to hear the Passion Story from John's gospel and to venerate the Cross of Christ.

Easter Vigil Saturday, April 15th, 8:00 p.m. This evening our faith community gathers to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection, the greatest celebration of the church year. The evening consist of lighting a fire,

proclaiming the story of salvation through several scripture readings, blessing the waters used for Baptism, and lighting our parish Easter candle, and renewing our Baptism promises. The celebration usually lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Easter Sunday April 16th, 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. Mass

Parish Enrichments Fides Quarens Intellectum: Faith Seeking Understanding

On Wednesday, April 19 at 6:00 pm, we will have our last Faith Enrichment session on apologetics. This month we will be fo-cusing on the reasons why we do what we do at Mass. Have you ever been asked why we stand when we do, or, why we kneel when we do at different times throughout the Mass? Why do priests and deacons kiss the altar before and after Mass? Why does Father wear what he does for Mass? Why do we make the sign of the cross on our foreheads, mouth, and heart before the Gospel is proclaimed? Why does Father break a little piece of the

host and place it in the chalice after the consecration? If you’ve ever wondered about any of these questions or why we do the things we do at Mass, please come to this session to have those questions answered!

For the duration of our time together, we will watch a video presentation by Fr. Mike Schmitz. Father Mike will take us from when the priest is preparing for Mass in the sacristy, to when we are dismissed from Mass and “sent forth” out into the world. If you missed any of our previous sessions, please do not let that prevent you from attending this session in April! All parishioners are welcome whether or not you have a child in faith formation, and childcare will be provided

Abstinence & Fasting Abstinence from meat is asked by the Church for all Catholics on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fri-days of Lent. This applies to all who have celebrated their fourteenth birthday.

Fasting (one regular meal and two smaller meals, which to-gether do not exceed the larger meal) is imposed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for those who have already celebrated their eighteenth birthday but who have not yet celebrated their fifty-ninth birthday.

On the two days of fast and abstinence (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal one full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday regulations are, in sum-mary:

ABSTINENCE, for all Catholics who have celebrated their fourteenth birthday, AND FASTING, for all Catholics who already celebrated their eighteenth birthday but who have not yet celebrated their fifty-ninth birthday.

Through the Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world to stand in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Col-lection, you become an instrument of peace in a troubled land. In these challenging times in the Middle East, your support means that our church will conduct parish ministry, provide Catholic educa-tion, feed the hungry, build housing for Christians, maintain shrines and operate refugee centers in the Holy Land. Our parish will support Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help carry the cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy Land. PLEASE BE GENEROUS!

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

We are at the doorsteps of Holy Week where we remember Christ’s passion. Jesus humbled himself and let go of everything, emptying himself for us. During this time of Lent, how have we joined the Lord? Has our prayer, penitential practices and almsgiving moved us to humble ourselves before the Lord? Have we let go of things that keep us from being authentic stewards for Christ Jesus? How have we “emptied” ourselves so that when we do approach the table of the Lord, we can be nour-ished by His body and blood? As disciples of Christ and stewards of His gift of faith, it is time to evalu-ate our lives under the cross.

Lotsa Helping Hands Meals Ministry

Sacred Heart Church is in need of volunteers to OCCA-SIONALLY be asked to do-

nate cookies or bars for social activities at church or to make a meal

for families in need, those celebrating the birth of a child, for church social activities, and/or funer-als. We have become partners with a website that will send a request to your email when there is a need. If you want to help, all you need to do is to reply to the email once it is sent out. If you are unable to help, then you don't need to do any-thing for that request. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. To have your name added to the list of people who would be willing to help out by preparing food, just send your name and email address to Tina Stammeyer at [email protected] and a link will be sent to you to sign up. Thank you for helping us to meet the needs of the parish through this volunteer ministry.

Why don’t Catholics study and prepare for

the end times or rapture?

Quite simply, we don’t prepare for the rap-ture because as Catholics we don’t believe in the rapture. We do believe that there is a time when the world will end, but we have no idea when that day will come. Fundamentalist Christians believe that the world will end with a rapture where the good will be taken and the evil left. It is based on a misreading of Revelation 20 that speaks of an angel in the pit who will ravage the earth for 1,000 years. This is called amillennialism, and the Church has condemned this belief (CCC 676). The whole “left be-hind” series comes from this misreading. Rather than being afraid of the end of the world, the Catholic Church teaches that the best way to prepare for the coming of Christ is by living the sacramental life of the Church: being baptized, celebrating the Eucharist and reconciliation consistently, being married or professing holy orders in the Church, and partaking in the anointing of the sick. By doing these things we are participating in the fullness of the Church and life with Christ. This is the best way to prepare for Christ’s return. While we as Catholics do believe there will be a day when we will be gathered to Christ, we look forward to this day with anticipation and joy, not fear and anguish.

April 9, 2017 Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion (A) Is 50:4 –7, Phil 2:6 –11, Mt 26:14 — 27:66

Palm (or Passion) Sunday prepares us to leave behind Jesus’ public ministry and to enter into his suffering and death. From miracles, crowds, and praise we move to pain, silence, and humility. Only the strong and true lovers of Jesus will make it to the foot of the cross. The transfiguration of the Lord reminds us of the glory we are all called to even when that glory is hidden. When God called Abraham, it was to make of him a great nation and to give him glory. But Abraham had to leave what he had and enter into the unknown to receive what was promised. We, too, need to set out and leave our expectations if we ever hope to enter the mysteries of faith and discover the reward we are searching for. Set-ting out and leaving behind are like little “deaths” that prepare us for the glory of salvation. The Father revealed Jesus’ glory to his three closest apostles so their faith would survive the cross. God didn’t want them to become disillusioned or frightened by his suffering and death. A voice came down from heaven and confirmed Jesus as the Son to assure the apostles that even if he didn’t seem like the Messiah in his human nature, he most certainly was.

It was this image of the glorified Jesus that Raphael reflected on and labored over for years. He needed to see this transfiguration during his life and at the hour of his death to keep the faith. So do we.

For Reflection How do I respond to Jesus’ invitation to join him in his passion? How do my actions indi-cate where my heart really is? Would I be shrouded in shadow or surrounded by Jesus’ glory?

Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
