Reconciliation Week Thank you to Nada Potter who has stepped in for Miss Craig to coordinate our Reconciliation Week activi-ties at Chertsey. Yesterday we were fortunate to have a visiting performer, Ryka Ali enthral both students and adults with his cultural presentation which included stories, dances and songs from his Indigenous heritage stretching all the way to the Torres Strait Islands. It was followed by a flag –raising ceremony and a morning tea for our Indigenous students , families and friends. Well done to students Isaiah Deamon and Zach Christie who led our special assembly and also Blake Druitt who played the didgeridoo at the flag-raising ceremony. Senior School Jackets Last week I mentioned that our P&C has endorsed the idea of a senior school jacket. I have once again included a photograph of the selected jacket which will come with the school crest embroided on one side of the chest region. The cost will be $30. Some sample jackets for sizing will be available hopefully this week along with an order form which will be sent home with each Year 5 and 6 student. Zone Cross Country Last Friday I attended the Zone Cross Country Carnival. For the first time the course was at Wyoming Public School. It was a challenging course through a rainforest but without Chertsey’s Heartbreak Hill. Our students once again did us proud with their whole-hearted efforts and the sporting spirit which was demonstrated. I saw in one instance, a Chertsey student go back to check on a runner from another school who had taken a tumble. This is typical of Chertsey kids! Well done to everyone who participated. Thank you to Mrs Denning and Mrs Masters who supported students with special needs, Mr. MacFarlane for organising and managing the Chertsey students on the day and Mr Francis for officiating in his role as President of the Brisbane Water PSSA. New Classrooms Last Friday afternoon I attended a landscaping meeting with the construction managers and landscaper of our BER work and also our school’s two Earth Committee representatives, Mark Deuxberry and John Martin. With landscaping due to start within the next two weeks it is important to ensure consultation occurs with our school community representatives. With a mix of native shrubs, grasses, feature trees and turf I am confident we will have both contemporary teaching facilities to replace two old demountables and relaxing physical surrounds for our students which will serve our school well for many years into the future. It is highly likely that these rooms will be ready for occupation at the start of next term.

Looking Forward To.... Now we are nearly over the hump and into the second part of the term we have many activities that our students are in-volved in during the next six weeks and beyond. Already, Literacy and Homework Clubs have kicked off very success-fully. The dance group are fine-tuning their Abba medley for Laycock St on the 29th June. (Last week I forgot to mention the valuable contribution of parent, Carol Wilson who regularly lends her expertise with our performing arts activities. Thank you Carol!. Also our wonderful Recorder Group are off to the Sydney Opera House for the second year; next Monday 31st May and the school prefects will present their second Kidz Biz on community radio next Wednesday, 2nd June at 11am. I have heard from Miss Wiseman that our terrific senior choir have also been invited to perform in the Cen-tral Coast Showcase at the end of this term as well as gaining entry to the Festival of Choral Music at the Sydney Opera House in Term 3. Miss Whitty has been busy organising the Stage two excursion for early next term and our P&C are keen to have the new K-2 playground equipment installed this term. And in amongst all of this activity our hard work-ing teachers will be preparing 220 mid year reports to send home to families by the end of this term. Phew! I am tired just thinking about all of it. Did I mention that we are also planning our school concert for Term 3?

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART Yesterday the children received their sponsorship forms for Jump Rope for Heart. You can either collect sponsors face to face or you can now go on-line. In 2001, when we last participated in Jump Rope, the children raised over $2 700. This year, our goal is $3 000. The attached information letter with your sponsorship form explains about the Heart Foundation and how our fundraising efforts can help. All of us in some way either knows of or have personally been affected by someone with heart disease. Unfortunately, this is not just “an older persons disease”. It can strike anyone at anytime. Let’s do what we can to help raise funds to help in fighting heart disease. The children have been practising their skipping skills, preparing for our “Jump Off” day on Friday, 18th June. Also, on Tuesday, 8th June, we are very fortunate to have a skipping demonstration team coming to Chertsey to show off their talents to the students. They are only visiting 4 local schools this year, so we are extremely lucky to be having them. Please do what you can and support your children in this fundraiser. If you require further information or forms, please do not hesitate to contact me. Kate Currie JRFH Coordinator
