Parish Office PASTORAL POST

Written by Fr. Tony

(The Life of Sr. Thea: Part 5 of 10)

In 1972, Sr. Thea was assigned to teach at Viterbo College, the Franciscan

Sisters of Perpetual Adoration’s college in La Crosse, WI. She was an English

professor and was said to be ‘the most powerful woman on campus.’ She

knew all about Black history, Thomas More, and William Faulkner. At the end

of the 1978 school year, however, her time at Viterbo College would come to

an end and she moved to Mississippi. This was because her parents were

getting older and she, being the only child, was responsible to take care of

them. As a loving daughter who was so appreciative of her parents, she was a

wonderful caretaker. Ironically, both her mother and father died a month

apart from each other in 1984.

During her years back home in Mississippi, Sr. Thea became famous. The

bishop of her diocese, Joseph Brunini, created a new position in the diocese

for her. Sr. Thea was to be the Diocesan Consultant for Intercultural

Awareness. Bishop Brunini listened to her and was very supportive of her work

and vision. She, in turn, was extremely loyal to him. Sr. Thea traveled around

the country giving talks. She was a sought-out speaker for events and a special

signature of her talks revolved around breaking out into song. She believed

that the key to understanding Black culture, psychology, and religious history

was found when one paid serious attention to their music. She said, “Those

Black spirituals are my roots. Those songs helped my people survive. They let

them express themselves, their joys, their pain, their grief, their longing, their

frustrations, their love of God and their love of each other.” (161) Another

treasure of Black spirituality was its holistic approach. As Sr. Thea said, “Black

people use the mind, memory, imagination, feeling, passion and emotion. The

body also has a role.” (265) Sr. Thea also proudly wore traditional African

clothing for her religious ‘habit’.

By 1983, Sr. Thea was still the only Black sister in her religious order. During

these years, she continued to celebrate her ethnicity. She would often tell

White Catholic audiences, “I tried your way of worship for thirty-some years;

now you try mine.” (165) For her, White Catholicism was primarily a head trip.

It had its place, but it was more concerned with thinking rather than

movement.

STEWARDSHIP MEDITATION

“I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O

Lord, have given to me.” (Deuteronomy 26:10)

This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to

God from your “first fruits”, the best that you have to offer, or do you give

from what is leftover? Second, do you recognize that everything you have has

been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every

day, in all circumstances.
