DISCLAIMER

The opinions expressed in this publication are those of the individual contributors and may not necessarily agree with the opinions of the Editor , the Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc. or the individual Clubs affiliated with the Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc., nor are we responsible for any goods advertised for sale.

To all Bugle Readers

Recently, Bugle recipients were contacted by the previous Bugle Editor with regards to his resignation from the position. The Society’s decision to have the Bugle checked before publication was in no way questioning the Editor’s ability to do the job and we were disappointed that he chose to resign. There has always been a set of guidelines for the Bugle which need to be followed. One of the criteria of these guidelines is to make sure that functions that are organised by Clubs on behalf of the Society eg. Sunshine State Roundup, are given priority in the Bugle.

We also need to ensure that ALL contributors to the Bugle are given fair and equitable positioning within the layout of the Bugle to promote their dates. We would like to assure all readers that the Bugle will continue on as it has always been. It is a medium for Dancers, Callers, Cuers and Clubs to express their opinions and views through articles, letters or club news. As long as content does not cross common social boundaries, we will continue to welcome all contributions.

Over the coming months we will be including a variety of articles as well as the current advertising in the Bugle. We hope, over time, to build the Bugle into an even more informative publication that can be used as a strong promotional tool for clubs across Queensland and our activity in general. We are looking forward to your continued support and contributions. Lynette Macpherson - President

CANE COUNTRY SQUARES - BUNDABERG

On May 16th, RED was the predominate colour in everyone's outfit for our Annual "Dance for Heart". We were joined by learners from Shirley's Thursday afternoon group as well as our Friday evening class. Three tables were full of items for the continuous raffles drawn between dances. Our profit amounting to $386.00 was presented that night to Heart Support Bundaberg to assist local heart patients with recovery activities.

On Friday 13th June, our predominant colour changed to BLACK for "Black Friday" with our raffle containing black grocery items in a black bucket, and estimation of black jelly beans in a jar to add to the fun. The black jelly beans were won by one of our young learners. A good night of dancing was had by all. Our new learners are joining in the club activities

and seem to be enjoying the social nights we have planned.

To the Square Dance Society Committee

I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for a very pleasant day at

the Diamond Jubilee Meeting and Dance. I was most impressed by the way

the whole day was organised and was delighted that the meeting was opened

to all members and that there was free discussion about a number of topics.

I noted that although a number of people seemed to get a little hot under the

collar, the situation was managed very well and so no one was treated poorly

and everyone was able to comment. I believe that for some dancers this

committee may take a bit of getting used to but I believe that they will bring

us into a better future.

I would also like to say that the catering for the lunch was very generous and

delicious, it was good that it was presented in a casual manner so that we

could mingle and get to know some of the dancers from other clubs.

The dance itself was very good as it catered to all levels and was a lot of fun as

well. I have been dancing for a number of years now (I started in 1996) and

since becoming disabled have found that often I prefer to dance at a slightly

slower pace and I find the basic brackets a great way to do this.

I welcome the new committee members, wish them well and thank them, once

again, for a lovely and well run day.

Sincerely,

Leanne Gracie

SALAD BOWL SQUARE DANCE CLUB

Memories of Salad Bowl Square Dance club, as told by Estelle White who was one of the very

early club members.

Salad Bowl Swingers was started by George & John Renn in 1970. It was started as a family club.

Peter Johnson was the caller with his wife Evie taking the microphone on many occasions. Peter

called until his health forced retirement in 1994.

The club name and their badges were changed when the word “Swingers” had a few different

meanings. Hence “Salad Bowl Squares” and the new badge came into being. For many years the

club held camps. These were held at sites including “Christmas Creek”. At its peak there were 40

or more dancers attending. The ladies all had four different dresses as club outfits.

On at least twenty occasions Peter and the club members combined with Art Shepard from New

Zealand to bring a visiting caller from the United States to Brisbane. This caller would call dances

in NZ then come across to Brisbane to be the feature caller for a great festival named “The

Strawberry Festival”. Some of the callers who featured at “Strawberry Festivals” were Frank Lane,

Dave Taylor, Art Shepard, Bob van Antwerp and many others. These festivals were always very

well attended by dancers from Queensland and other states.

After Peter retired; several callers took the responsibilities for calling. A lovely New Zealand couple

settled in for a while, Pat and Brian Dalton ran things until they left for Brian to move to England

with his job. Jason Dean took over at that stage and his youth and exciting calling kept the dancers

on their toes, Jason would sometimes accompany himself with his guitar which made for a smooth

sound combination. Peter Story followed for a while. P eter was followed by Kay Walker who was

the club caller when the committee decided they could not sustain enough interest to keep it going

any longer.

Salad Bowl Squares gave a sound introduction to many of the Brisbane Square dancers today.

Their club dancers, their outfits, their badges and the Strawberry Festivals will be happy memories

for many. Thank You.

Estelle White

Memories are Made of This! Salad Bowl Squares and Strawberry Festival Dances – a tribute to when the Shire of Redland was

the Salad Bowl of Queensland. Monthly theme nights were great fun. Why am I not surprised that Ice-Cream Night and Soup Night

were the most popular. Our Birthday dance in June and Christmas dance, the last one of the year on

the Square Dance calendar, were always so well supported. As a Club, there were trips away to National and State Conventions, to Armidale in October and

special functions at other Clubs.

Thank you to the Square Dance Callers and Round Dance Cuers who kept us on our heels and toes.

Thank you to the dancers for your laughter, love and friendship. Age, illness, injury, family commitments and the travel bug all took their toll on attendances. In the

end, one intake of beginners every two years was not sufficient to sustain the Club.

After 44 years, it is with great sadness that we say farewell to Salad Bowl Squares Square Dance

Club at the Anglican Parish Hall, 17-19 Station Street, Wellington Point.

Salad Bowl Squares Closed After Forty-Four Years

Sadly another Square Dance club has closed. Salad Bowl Squares started in June 1970 and closed in May 2014. The first caller duo was Peter and Ev Johnson followed by Brian and Pat Dalton. After Jason Dean, Kay Walker was the last caller for the club. In my opinion there were many and varied reasons why the club finally succumbed to the changing times. Many older dancers would remember the good times and the events that were possible with a large enthusiastic club of many years ago. Only a few remember the times of waiting at the hall wondering if there would be a set to dance. After four months of this, at a general meeting, the members voted to close the club. As it happened we did dance on the last day with exactly eight dancers. I would like to thank the current active members, the executive and our caller Kay Walker for their tenacity and loyalty to Salad Bowl Squares and to Square Dancing in general. Aaron Hoppe President, Salad Bowl Squares

Rambling Eights - Caller David Pearce

With the arrival of cold winter nights it was great to have a soup and silly socks night in June. Instead of our usual supper of tea and coffee with biscuits and cakes, we had six large pots of yummy soup provided by dancers, with a variety of breads to choose from. We filled our bowls with the soup of choice, and sat around the tables in a cosy group, chatting and laughing and going back for seconds and then some more. The atmosphere was heightened by having David and Faith joining us, as well as a visitor from Germany, Anja, who also came back the following week. After sup-per David organised the vote for the silliest socks with Les taking the vote for the men and Faith for the ladies. I for one, am actually considering wearing socks more often, as it makes for a bit more comfort in the cold, but maybe not the striped ones. David is now easing back slowly into calling, taking up the microphone for a couple of numbers, and hoping to increase bit by bit, giving Noel a break. We are all so grateful to Noel for filling in, and at this time of year when the numbers always drop off a bit, it is great to have the support of the loyal club members. Our next night is our Mid-year Christmas celebration on 25

th July, when club members are encour-

aged to take up the theme for supper, as well as decorating and contributions for raffle prizes. Many small items donated in the weeks leading up are made up into various parcels offering bumper prizes for the winners. We hope to have the hall filled with Christmas cheer, as the callers also get into the atmosphere of calling numbers in the theme as well as everyone getting out their festive outfits. We look forward to welcoming visitors as well as catching up with familiar faces.

STEPPING OUT WITH CLOGGING

What great month for Clogging May was, with a wonderful weekend at the Urban & Country Music Festival at Caboolture, then CHUG-A-LUG’S 27

th Birthday celebra-

tions which took up a full Saturday at the School of Arts Hall, Coorparoo. Absolutely inspirational was the support given by the Clogging community to these events, plus the long list of talented Cuers, with it all being put together by industri-ous organisers and their helpers: truly goes to show- Clogging is one big, happy family. AND JUNE: Yes, many of us did go, and we all now know what a great destination Darwin is as Cloggers from all over descended on ‘The Territory’, making a super memorable occasion of the 19

th ACA National Clogging Convention.

Thank you to Jenny Neal as Convenor and members of the organising Committee, the Cuers, those who organised the dancers for the Showcase segment (Wow! what a fantastic show), all the enthusiastic helpers, the local Club- Nuline Dancers, and everyone who danced their hearts out over this wonderful weekend of Clogging. Talk about keen! Our dear friend, Olive Borovsky is already spreading the word about the legendary ‘AUSSIE CLOG WEEKEND’ at Kindilan (situated at Redland Bay). When? the first weekend in September. Olive will happily give you all the details when you call her on 07 3345 3066. After days and nights of torrid weather earlier this year, the move into winter is very welcome, and as has been said “During winter, just thinking about Clogging keeps you warm”. Enjoy your dancing and the fun and friendship it brings. Frances FRANCES LOOK O.A.M. Ph: 07 3391 6526, MOBILE: 0429 851 891 EMAIL: [email protected] WEBSITE: www.cloggingaustralia.com

Suncoasters Square Dance Club

On the fifth Saturday in May, Suncoasters enjoyed our "M" Theme Party Night which meant that we were to dress as something starting with 'M'. We had two Maid Marions, a Milk Maid, Marilyn Monroe, two Little Miss Muffets, a Mexican Lady, two Minnie Mouses and we all had a great night. We are enjoying having some visitors joining us for dances. Nev and Bev have gone to the National Clogging Convention in Darwin and are enjoying a trip through the outback for the month. Gary is keeping the Club running in their absence and for our Plus dancers, James Reid is calling Plus and A1 dances on Sunday afternoons and we are very much enjoy ing his calling. James was a well known caller in the past but retired from calling a few years ago for family reasons. Our members are therefore being kept very happy with these two excellent callers looking after us.

Cairns City Square Dance Club

The Club’s Friday nights dancing has been well attended this month with members all here except myself who has been away in Mackay and Airlie Beach.

Diann has had an accident and hurt her ankle so she is in charge of the music.

Our pizza night on the 20th was enjoyed by members with plenty to eat. Thanks to Bev for

organizing this.

We have welcomed Janine and her daughter Helen as new members. They travel some dis-tance from Ravenshoe with their family and Helen’s 2 little boys to dance with the club. Oth-er members to travel a distance are Jean and Col from Mareeba and Helen from Kuranda.

The club was informed last week of the death of John Eustance who was 84 and has not danced for some time due to ill health. John and his wife Lorna who died some years ago were both foundation members of the club.

TAIGUM TWIRLERS

Just recently we had a visit from a young lady from Germany. Her name was Anja and she

had been in contact with Lynette about coming to Taigum to dance with us.

After a little hiccup with pickup details and a small language barrier, we finally got Anja

safely to club and a great night of dancing. We found out she has been dancing for thirteen

years. It was an interesting experience for newer dancers to meet someone who couldn’t

speak English but could dance to the calls perfectly well, prompting Sid to explain to our

dancers that square dancing was called in English all across the world.
