Who Said It?

1. “There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we willconquer. Rally behind the Virginians!”

2. “We could have pursued no other course without dishonor. And sad as the results havebeen, if it had all to be done again, we should be compelled to act in precisely thesame manner.”

3. “It will be a glorious day for our country when all the children within its borders shall learnthat the four years of fratricidal war between the North and South was waged by neither withcriminal or unworthy intent, but by both to protect what they conceived to be threatenedrights and imperiled liberty: that the issues which divided the sections were born when theRepublic was born, and were forever buried in an ocean of fraternal blood.”

4. “Nothing fills me with deeper sadness than to see a Southern man apologizing for the defensewe made of our inheritance. Our cause was so just, so sacred, that had I known all that hascome to pass, had I known what was to be inflicted upon me, all that my country was tosuffer, all that our posterity was to endure, I would do it all over again.”

5. “If we were wrong in our contest, then the Declaration of Independence of 1776 was a gravemistake, and the revolution to which it led was a crime... If Washington was a patriot, Leecannot have been a rebel; if the enunciation of the grand truths in the Declaration ofIndependence made Jefferson immortal, the observance of them could not have made Davis atraitor.”

6. “Captain, my religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed thetime for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equallybrave.”

7. “For my part, I have no hesitancy from the first that, right or wrong, alone or otherwise, I gowith Virginia.”

8. “The Army of Northern Virginia was never defeated. It merely wore itself out whipping the enemy.”

9. “Our boys [Confederate partisans] are scattered everywhere. You will find their graves in thehollows and on the hills, by the gulf and on these prairies. Many have no monument. Theydon't need any. They made their monuments while they lived. They left a record for daringcourage that the world has not surpassed.”

10. “Surrender means that the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; thatour youth will be trained by Northern school teachers; will learn from Northern school bookstheir version of the War; will be impressed by all the influences of history and education toregard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.”“Thetime for war has not yet come, but it will come, and that soon; and when it does come, myadvice is to draw the sword and throw away the scabbard.”

Everyone make an effort to attend the meeting Thursday night, you don’t want to miss“The Capitals of the Confederacy.”

Every nation, no matter how brief its lifespan, has a capital. The Confederate States ofAmerica, over the course of four years, boasted no fewer than five capital cities, from theheady early days of the new country to the dismal last hours of a transient government. While some of these sites are commemorated with impressive monuments and museums, others offer scant evidence of their moment in the history of the War Between the States.Join award-winning historian Michael C. Hardy as he recounts the history of the places thatbecame capitals of the Confederacy: Montgomery, Richmond, Danville, Greensboro, andCharlotte. Each played a role in the story of the Confederate government, a role that becamewoven into the history of that place and its people.

Michael C. Hardy has been interested in military history for over thirty years. Agraduate of the University of Alabama, Michael has penned twenty books, and his articleshave appeared in America's Civil War, Civil War Times, Gettysburg Magazine, and the TarHeel Junior Historian. Michael's works have won numerous awards, and, in 2010, he wasnamed the North Carolina Historian of the Year by the NC Society of Historians. In 2013,he became a Roads Scholar for the NC Humanities Council. Michael became a member ofthe Sons of Confederate Veterans in 1994 and has served as historian for the North CarolinaDivision, Sons of Confederate Veterans since 2014. Michael lives in western NorthCarolina with his wife Elizabeth and their children, Nathaniel and Isabella.
