ODDS & ENDS

The Flyer Odds & Ends Page 2

COVID-19 GUIDELINES After you receive your COVID vaccine, you’ll still need to wear a mask and follow quarantine rules when using any of the Cottonwood Palo Verde facilities. The COVID-19 vaccines are expected to be pivotal in getting our pre-pandemic lives back, but that doesn't mean we can let our guard down. The risks are not gone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still recommends wearing a mask, even after you’ve had the vaccine.

Remember no vaccine is 100% effective. Although data from the clinical trials suggests that the COVID-19 vaccines are extremely good, they aren’t perfect. It’s possible a vaccinated person can pick up, carry, and spread the virus that causes COVID-19 to others. We just don’t know yet. This means that while your vaccine should keep you from getting symptoms, there’s a chance you could still pass the virus from person to person. Even worse, you’d have no idea it was happening.

We all need to do our part and follow the mandates placed by our local authorities and the CDC in keeping each other safe.

COVID-19 VACCINES Cottonwood Palo Verde is not one of the COVID-19 Maricopa County "PODS" distributing the COVID-19 vaccine. To sign up and/or receive additional information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine please go to podvaccine.azdhs.gov. Information regarding COVID and the vaccine is being updated on a daily basis. Additional information can also be found on the maricopa.gov website.

2021 - 1st HALF HOA DUES The first half of the 2021 HOA dues were due on January 1st. Any HOA Dues NOT paid by Jan. 18th will incur late fees and interest charges. If you are unsure you have paid your dues, please call the office at 480-895-3550 and we will gladly check for you.

DO NOT GO

AROUND

BARRICADES

PLEASE DON'T FEED THE ANIMALS... including feral cats and cute kittens. When you put food out for one animal it draws many others, including the not so cute animals such as skunks, coyotes, wild dogs - even a bobcat was sited this year.

A few tips:

Perhaps, most important, do not put food or water out for wild animals! By feeding the animals it also encourages the bird population. You may have noticed we have nearly twice the number of birds this year. Therefore, we have twice the mess to clean up.

Do not leave pet food or water out! Leftover, stale pet food attracts insects and standing water will attract mosquitoes.

Spray concentrated orange juice or hang orange or lemon peals in areas where cats are spraying. They are put off by the citrus scent. There are also many commercial cat repellants available in garden stores, pet shops and online.

Please Don't, Please Don't feed the animals. We all Thank You, in advance.

FITNESS ACTIVITY CENTER Monday-Friday 6:00am-7:00pm; Saturday-Sunday 6:00am-6:00pm

The Flyer Fitness Activity Center Page 3

FITNESS MYTH & FITNESS FACT Fitness Fact This is a continuation from last week’s “High Intensity Training” article. The previous article covered:

3 methods used to measure the intensity level of a physical activity or cardio exercise routine, and

How to determine maximal heart rate, or MHR, for an individual (you!).

Now we proceed to applying that information to the next step, which is determining the intensity level of a physical activity or cardio exercise.

In general, intensity levels (low, moderate, high) are categorized according to a certain percentage of an individual’s maximal heart rate (MHR), which is stated in heart beats per minute (BPM). The percentages I use may be slightly different than what other trainers use, but they are very close – there are no absolute specific industry standards.

Low intensity is 50% or less of MHR.

The Fox formula MHR for my age is 157 (220 – my age), so low intensity activity for me would have a heart rate of 157 x 50% = 78 BPM (or less). A heart rate at or below 78 BPM is low intensity for me.

Moderate intensity is 50% to 70% of MHR.

We already figured out my 50% number using the Fox formula MHR – it was 78 BPM.

The 70% number would be .7 times 157 = 110 BPM.

A heart rate between 78 BPM and 110 BPM during physical activity or exercise would be considered moderate intensity for my age.

High intensity is 70% to 85% of MHR.

The 70% number for my age, using the Fox formula for MHR, is 110 BPM.

The 85% number would be .85 times 157 = 133 BPM.

A heart rate between 110 BPM and 133 BPM during physical activity would be considered high intensity, with 110 at the “lower” end and 133 at the “higher” end of the high intensity range.

Maximum intensity is anything above 85% of MHR. This level is difficult to maintain for more than a few seconds (think 100 yard dash in track). Exercising at this level is not necessarily beneficial for improving health and greatly increases injury risk.

In the next article, I will provide you with information about cardio interval training (which involves manipulating intensity levels for specific time durations) – benefits, methods and progressions (review an earlier article about Progressive Overload – it applies here, too).

FAC INFORMATION Reiki! Reiki Master Catharina Cupples will be offering FREE Reiki demonstrations and information workshops at the CWPV Fitness Center on two dates in March.

Monday, March 15th

from 4:00pm - 5:30pm

Friday, March 19th

from 10:00am - 11:30am

Attendees will have the opportunity to experience this form of energy healing and will learn about the potential benefits that can result from Reiki sessions. Attendance is FREE, but limited – please register, in advance, at the Fitness Desk or call 480-895-1776.

New Group Fitness Classes in March The March schedule will feature some new group fitness classes and 2 new instructors!

Mary Tyree will be offering an additional Zumba Gold class on Thursday afternoons at 2:00pm.

Stephanie Buettner (new instructor) will be offering 4 new morning classes – 2 on Thursday and 2 on Friday.

Nancy Patterson (new instructor) will be offering 3 late afternoon classes on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday.

More class details (descriptions and times), along with instructor biographies will follow soon!

New Small Group ‘Tabata’ Training program to start in March! Roberta Kagno, our new personal trainer, will be offering a small group personal training program known as ‘Tabata’, in March. ‘Tabata’ is basically an interval training program – alternating higher (relative term) intensity activities (work) with low intensity activities (rest), with defined time durations for each interval. A ‘Tabata’ workout can use any physical activity for a workout. The duration of work: rest ratio should be about 1:3 for beginners and slowly progress as the participants improve in fitness conditioning. For example: 10 seconds high intensity to 30 seconds rest, performed for 4-8 intervals.

The program will include 2 sessions per week for 4 weeks. Watch for more information in the next ITK! The exact schedule and session cost details will be available at the Fitness Desk.
