Collaborating to help save
one million children’s lives
A partnership across the business
Innovative thinking from our partnership
has already led us to try to reformulate an
antiseptic found in one of our over-the counter
products,Corsodyl mouthwash, into a gel for
umbilical cord cleansing to help prevent infection
in newborns.
By combining our scientific expertise and global reach together with Save the Children’s on-the-ground knowledge in some of the world’s poorest countries we aim to help save one million children’s lives.

A partnership on the verge
of a malaria breakthrough
In Africa a child dies from
malaria every minute.
30 years and counting
We’ve been working with the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative, with backing from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a vaccine against this disease. This would be a world first.
We’ve been working on this for more than 30 years and because it will only be used among children in some of the world’s poorest countries we’ve committed to make it available on a not-for-profit basis.

RSA Tutor’s Briefing Sept 16
2016/17 Brief
• GSK already supplies many life saving products into emerging markets
• Yearly 3 million babies die before/during delivery or in the first week of life
• Challenge: Using creative design to propose effective solutions that can improve the quality of life for mothers and newborn babies:
– Consider the patient and also the Healthcare provider
– Consider the patient journey (managing their medicine)
– Consider ‘Frugal Design’ as resources are limited and expensive in emerging markets
• The choice of design area is open:
– A new product or method
– Packaging & storage of medication – how to protect medicines
– Medicine dispensing /distribution / measurement / taking
– An educational campaign or materials
– The ‘Experience’ of Healthcare Environment…etc.……………………however:
The design MUST be based on a REAL (identified) need
Research will be needed – by default
• Sub Sahara Africa & the least developed countries have a unique set of
challenges and these can be turned into real opportunities:
– Scale of the Region (look at the map as an example: think all emerging mkts..not just Africa)
– Transport (roads/rail limited-get worse as you get closer to ‘last mile’
– Environment is hot/humid but colder at night....it all varies
– Utilities are sparse (water/electricity etc)
– Access – many of the population are on $1-2 a day
– Illiteracy/education is an issue
– Materials are limited – recycling/reuse
– Medical centres can be basic & difficult to access
• Research the region and look for ‘nuggets’:
– Good research will identify clues to real needs
– Get students to explore - at the heart of good design is meeting a real need
– Solutions may be really simple – the best ideas often are

Expectations
We have no pre conceived ideas – this is a deliberately open brief. However we need :
• An ‘inclusive design’ thinking about the real needs of the mother and baby
• Evidence of research – what did you learn?
• Initial Clues and how you build on these with more of a focus/deeper dive
• What was the specific need to then design around – show concept development?
• Solution.....give the judges a simple, easy to understand summary backed up with a visual
image and brief explanation of the original ‘need’ identified

Some research background has been provided (links in the brief) to kick-start
student’s thinking......most of all we want to ensure that this brief is exciting, fun
and potentially disruptive!
