A Golf Club Steeped In Historyroyal ascot Golf club was founded by local barrister f.J. Patton in 1887, and given royal status by Queen Victoria later that year. Many of her children learned to play golf at royal ascot and The Prince of Wales, later King edward Vii, was made patron of the club in 1901.

at first, royal ascot and ascot ladies golf clubs each had a 9-hole course on ascot heath in the middle of the racecourse. in 1895 the two clubs amalgamated and a new 18-hole course was designed by J.h. Taylor, then holder of the Open championship which he won five times. Joseph longhurst was appointed the first club professional in 1916.

in 1921 raGc hosted the inaugural british boys championship on the heath, and presented the r & a with a cup for an annual tournament which is still played for today. The championship was held on the heath again in 1922. That first year both henry cotton and his brother played, but henry was defeated in the first round. after the war the 1959 british ladies amateur championship was held at royal ascot and the event was won by elizabeth Price of england who had been runner up the previous year. The club celebrated its centenary in 1987 with a week of events opened by henry cotton.

When the ascot racecourse authority announced plans in the year 2000 for a major redevelopment of the racecourse it became necessary to look for a new location. This led to the club moving to a new course across Winkfield road on the site of the former ascot farm. raGc moved into its new clubhouse just before christmas 2004, while still playing on what remained of the old heath course. The new course opened for play in august 2005 (barry lane, a distinguished member and former ryder cup player, competed in the first match) and was formally opened by the club patron hrh Prince andrew, Duke of York, in May 2006.

Hole By HoleOver the following pages you can learn about the trials and tribulations of each hole and pick up some play tips from our club professionals.

    Hole 1 Minchin View 229 Yards / Par 3

from the medal tee a stiff opener, playing 229 yards but slightly downhill. Take one club more than you think. Dont ruin your round here, keep it in play, avoid rough to the right.

    Hole 2 - Brick Kiln 535 Yards / Par 5

an acute dogleg right par 5 of over 500 yards, anything leaking right down the length of the hole will be hard to find in deep rough. Wide of this rough is Out of bounds. The central guarding front bunker is some 25 yards from the putting surface. The green is small, with some devilish pin locations.

    Hole 3 - Thistle Carry 366 Yards / Par 4

a shortish par 4 that appears easy on the card, not so. requires a cleanly hit drive over a wide environmental hazard, the short route being down the right. a string of bunkers
