Dear Lord,

Bless us once more today, as we gather in your

presence for another chance at fellowship,

camaraderie, and sometimes serious discussions

on matters of great consequences.

Thank You for the meal that we share today

with our fellow Rotarians and friends, and grant

us more blessing which we can share with

others all the days of our life.

And lastly, grant us peace, harmony and

stability that will help carry us through another

millennium.

Amen

WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD

I see trees of green, red roses too

I see them bloom for me and you

And I think to myself

What a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white

The bright blessed day, the dark’ sacred night

And I think to myself

What a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky

Are also on the faces of people going by

I see friends shaking hands, saying how do you do

But They’re really saying, “I love you”.

I hear babies crying, and I watched them grow

They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know

And I think to myself

What a wonderful world.

Yes, I think to myself

What a wonderful world.

Oh yeah

Pres. Ner P. Laiño

Fellow Pasig Rotarians:

Only thirty (30) Rotarians attended our October 8 meeting but

practically all stayed up to the last minute. The topic of retired

Gen. Hernando SJ Lopez, PMA Class 1966, was apparently

interesting - - the BBL, and his discussion even touched on

Abraham, who we all know is the father of many nations. On the

subject of BBL, he reminded us that our Muslim brothers in

Mindanao are very poor, and according to the information of PP

Bert Albano and PP Peping Mabanta, in spite of the many millions

that our government has appropriated for the development of

Mindanao.

Bearing in mind the good suggestion of our Board that my

messages should no longer deal on the detailed matters of

collection, I however feel it is important to report:

1. That as announced by PP Rel, we will have a grand celebration

of our founding anniversary because it will be our 45th. PE

Ogie has already announced before that our Board has decided

to hold only a modest celebration but the Board can always

change its mind.

2. That we will no longer have the free Christmas party we used

to have c/o Rtn. Chony Gimenez at the DAMPA restaurant.

This time, it will be at the expense of all RC Pasig members

and it will be Rtn. Edison Go who will make all the

preparations.

3. That Secretary John Javier has been requested to set soonest

the meeting with the PLP president to finalize our college

scholarship.

Continuation 1.

4. That we will definitely have our mass for our deceased

Rotarians at the Baras Rm. VVCC on October 29 at 6PM and

that our fellowship will be after the mass.

5. That we will have a club assembly meeting today and also the

signing of our sister club renewal agreement with RC Balayan.

In closing, it will again be same message - - Let us all be Rotarians

not only first class but best class and, if possible, world class.

PP Benny P. De Guzman

We had a real Manileño to be guest speaker last week, Brig. Gen.

Hernando Lopez, an invitee of PP Bert Albano. Despite his very thin

frame, he maintains his vegetarian diet, that he requested to be seated

in the Presidential table because he could not bear the coolness of our

aircon. He was a Rotarian but gave up when he retired as he is back

in Manila. His Rotary years were based on his assigned places, i.e..,

in Palawan & Zamboanga. Like PP Celso, he wanted to be a priest.

As early as last month when we told the group of our Annual

Memorial Day, PP Bert offered the lechon right away. Last meeting,

he offered if we would prefer the big fresh Tuna. Tunay na Tuna.

Brand Sikat-Tuna. It is well known kaya sikat. Kaya pala bilis

magdonate ni Bert, birthday niya that day.

The board finally decided to drop off some names due to non-

attendance. However, my sponsored Rotarian, Andy Tan’s request to

return his classification was turned down. He offered instead financial

assistance in any project. Pwede namang financial assistance without

returning the classification, hindi ba.

His two sisters are more active in their San Juan club where Andy

also started. Sister Pilar, very active also in Red Cross, decided to

spend her birthday with a bang with a request that instead of gifts to

her, any donation to the Red Cross Rizal chapter be made she was

able to raise half a million pesos that Sunday night.

Spouse Dette assured me PP Bobby would be coming to our meeting

this birthday month of his..after today, we will have two more

meetings, the last one for the month would be our Memorial Day. It

would be nice to have sort of a reunion if we can get all the rest of the

October celebrants to pitch in. PPs Peping & Topax donated the

lechon last week. But the other honorees are quite aplenty to host the

meeting as we would go back for a day at La Colina as we expect

some visitors.

Sana we could get a donation of musical group as that would be a

nice fellowship of sorts.

WCP Ner is so concerned about financial matters that the golf

proceeds and the settlements of some major collectibles last week

buoyed up his collection drive. He is enthused on time management

especially on the President’s time in our regular meetings. His

President’s column is now 1 page.

We are lucky the remnants of the chocolate boys are still as active as

ever. Most inspiring of this group is PN Dr. Jess who is a contributor

both for our high school scholars and the costly college scholars.

What is happening to our country? Akala ko election is for our

Pangulo ng Pilipinas. PANGGULO ang nangyari, in the first day

pa lang 22 registered as candidate for President, that seemingly easily

about six of them are not even taxpayers. That former PCGG Head,

Camilo Sabio, a stroke victim could hardly walk. That Buboy Syjuco

is trying to ward off cases at the Ombudsman know they would not

land in the first six, but, are making the cost for Comelec higher.

Baka madaya tuloy tayo with the confusion.

Our fellow Rotarian, for the first time missed our induction last July,

is aware that our club does not have much muscle to help in any

elections BUT we are not aware of what he will run for. Of course,

we hear news that sister is running for his congressional seat.

The Philippine Rotary should support the ShelterBox program of

Rotary and we should pray for the Syrians especially the dislocated

families and children. Where is the world leading? Per PP Chris

Portillo, VVCC Oktoberfest tomorrow night Jazz w/ Casals 6 to 9pm.

P350.00 you get 5beers plus picapica.

MEMBER INTERVIEW: JIM AND ROBERTA GRAHAM

ON HEROISM IN AFGHANISTAN

Eleven years ago, Jim and Roberta Graham developed a personal

connection to Afghanistan after their son Rick, who was stationed

there with the Indiana National Guard, learned of an infant in a

refugee camp who needed heart surgery. In a story that tugged at the

heartstrings of Hoosiers and was recounted in The Rotarian (January

2011), the Grahams worked with Rotary clubs in District 6560

(Indiana) and others to bring the infant, Qudrat, to Indianapolis for

surgery. Tragically, Qudrat died shortly after returning to

Afghanistan, but in his memory, the Grahams have led an effort to

help his father build and operate two schools. Last fall, Jim and

Roberta, both 81 years old and members of the Rotary Club of

Brownsburg, traveled to Kabul to assist with polio immunizations.

THE ROTARIAN: Afghanistan is a dangerous place. Did you fear

for your safety when you were there?

JIM GRAHAM: I felt safe, although we dared not leave the hotel

except in the company of our UN escort. We don’t know the

language, and we would be easily identified as American by our

conversation and our appearance. It is quite dangerous for Americans

to walk the streets of Kabul.

TR: You visited several refugee camps and had an opportunity to

observe the eradication effort. What impressed you?

JIM: They are constantly immunizing. They try to catch every child

who enters the city fleeing from the Taliban, both in Pakistan and

Afghanistan. At the east portal of Kabul, young men wearing Rotary

caps would vaccinate children on the run. They would flag down all

Page 12: ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG · Ang layunin ng Rotaryo ay “ ... ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter October 15, 2015 WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD I see trees of green, red roses too I see them

cars with children, and when the drivers rolled down the windows,

they would reach inside and put the drops in the children’s mouths

and mark their fingers to indicate to any future immunizer that they

had been vaccinated. In an hour, there must have been 200 children

vaccinated.

ROBERTA GRAHAM: They had to be in tiptop physical condition

to withstand that rigorous work schedule. There were seven men paid

by Rotary working a six-hour shift. After six hours, I’m sure they

were exhausted. They would immunize a child within seconds. It was

amazing how efficient they were.

TR: What would you like Rotarians to know about the polio

eradication effort in Afghanistan?

ROBERTA: They can be sure their money is being well spent. We

saw how heroic the immunizers are. The other thing I felt strongly

about is the concern to not introduce polio back into the rest of the

world. To travel to India or Saudi Arabia or visit Mecca, you had to

show the embassies that you had a recent polio vaccination before

they would give you a visa.

JIM: Eradication can happen, and it will happen, because of Rotary’s

management and the support of the government. But we must fund it

to make it happen. It’s like driving a 100-mile trip in your car and not

having the gas to go the last 2 miles. We are so close. We’ve got to

finish the job. I would urge all Rotarians to continue to give to

PolioPlus.

GREATNESS OF ORDINARY LIFE

Continuation.

MARSEILLE

From Marseille Airport we took the Airport-St Charles bus, a

dedicated bus from the Airport that goes to St Charles Station,

Marseilles' central train station; the ride is about 30 mins. St

Charles is the train hub for trains that come and go to and from

France's other provinces, and is also a stop for Marseille's Metro, a

two-line underground subway.

At St Charles' Stn, before proceeding to our hotel, as we shall

spend one night only in Marseille, we already procured our train

tickets for Nice for the following day. The tickets cost 35 Euro

each for the 2:30pm, approximately 150km trip.

Whenever we go to Europe we shun taxis, we always take public

transpo. I find searching for buses, train stations, metro stations

exciting, that's why we never join tour groups. Our hotel in

Marseille is Ibis Styles Castellane (Ibis is a huge chain of 3-star

hotels in Europe, belonging to the Accore Hotels group), walking

distance from the Castellane stop of the Red Line of Marseille's

Metro.

It's easy to go around Marseille with its Metro. Its most famous

point of interest is the Old Port, called Vieux Port, mirroring

Marseille's past glory of being the trading capital of that region in

the Mediterrenean. The Old Port is now a busy huge three-sided

marina for numerous sailboats and yachts, lined in rows side by

side with each other. The three sides of the port is lined with 15th

and 16th century buildings, which gives a magnificent European

French-Mediterreanean view. The fourth side of the marina is the

mouth to the open sea.

Marseille is a tourist destination city like many other European

major cities; one can see hundreds of tourists at the large open

space Square fronting the Port. The city main square is common to

major European cities where visitors converge to enjoy the ancient

architecture and structures. Almost all ground floor of the

buildings surrounding the Square are cafe's and restaurants.

Although mid-September is already the onset of autumn, Marseille

is still hot and warm at mid-day till afternoon.

There's St Agustine Church along the Square, a white-painted I

would say 16th century church, so we checked the schedule of

Mass, unfortunately there was none anymore in that late afternoon

of Thursday, Sept 17. Another attraction of Marseille is the Old

Town, called Le Panier, the old town during the Roman

occupation, still preserved and inhabited.
