End of Term Edition Friday 24 March 2016
Dear Parents and Carers,
In our last week of every half term we focus on celebrating achievement in as many ways as we can. Our Young
Engineers came back from the Big Bang Engineering Festival in Birmingham as prize winners - their project was chosen
as the one which did more than any other to inspire engineers of the future, which is a remarkable achievement.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Young Voices and Rosebery Singers were a magnificent addition to the Leith Hill Festival,
with the Rosebery Singers winning first prize in the mixed age choir category. They joined many other talented
musicians in our wonderful Spring Concert on Wednesday evening, which was a pleasure to attend. Rosebery was
extremely well represented this week at the borough’s Duke of Edinburgh awards event with significant numbers of
Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates presented by the Mayor of Epsom. In every assembly, large numbers of students
have been entered for prize draws because of their excellent attendance and achievement point totals and the number
of Headteacher Commendations given this year has reached the 2000 mark this week which is brilliant! Finally, our
unique Easter Bonnet parade was as innovative and creative as ever!
I am sorry to report that a few staff are leaving Rosebery at the end of this term. Mrs Hayes, Head of Chemistry,
Mr Ragkousis, from the ICT Department and Mrs Gardner from the English Department are all leaving us. I would like
to thank them for their dedicated service to the school and wish them well for the future. These staffing changes do
mean that many students will be issued with a new timetable and this will happen on the first day back.
As usual, we have significant numbers of students heading away on school trips over the Easter break. Very best
wishes for a safe and happy trip to those Year 10 and 11 students going to China, to the Sixth Form scientists going to
Cern, and to the Gold D of E participants who are practising for their final expedition in Yorkshire. I am extremely
grateful to the 16 staff who are giving up part of their holiday to lead and accompany these trips.
A reminder that students return to school on Tuesday 12 April at 8.30am. It would be fantastic if every student was
in the correct uniform, so can I request that shoes are replaced where necessary, that all piercings are removed except
for one earring in each earlobe, and that everyone has a blazer or jumper for the long summer term ahead.
Many thanks to you all for your continued support and very best wishes for a sunny, restful and restorative Easter
break.

Young Engineers School of the Year – (Day 2,
continued from last week)
After a speedy breakfast at 7am, we walked to the NEC from our hotel via
Birmingham International Station and the Sky Walk. Using the quiet and calm
of the early morning, we entered via Hall 20 at 8.15am to spot stands we'd
like to return to later in the day.
The show opened at 9.30am bringing queues to
our activity. Around 10.15am, we noticed that
lots of security guards had positioned
themselves around the Young Engineers Stand
400. The Duke of York, as Patron of The Young
Engineers, had arrived by helicopter at
Birmingham airport to visit the Young Engineers
Stand. The Rosebery activity was so busy and popular, we were asked to shut down while
the Duke of York visited our section and the school next door. While the Duke of York
spoke to our team I had to turn away lots of disappointed visitors!
We remained extremely busy throughout the afternoon
but managed to work shifts to allow us to see some of the
exhibition. I was delighted to discover we'd been awarded
The Young Engineers Inspiring Futures through
Engineering Engagement Award (above) on the stage
across from us. Fortunately, Mr Chamberlain, Freya and
Chloe collected the trophy and £250 prize cheque.
At around 4pm, we went to see the grand final in Big Band
Stage in Hall 20. This is an event only available to
competitors at the show and not open to the public. We
have dismantled our display so that it can be rebuilt in
school during next term.
To be one of five schools in the National Final of the Young Engineering School of the Year Competition is a superb
achievement and this would not have been possible without the work of Mrs Keaveney, our Careers, Information,
Advice and Guidance Manager, and STEM activities across our whole school community.
Mrs Hanly, Head of Design & Technology

The Story of Cinderella
Cuddington Croft Primary School recently got in contact with Rosebery
with a magical request – they were looking for Cinderella. It transpired
that the original Cinderella had broken a limb and would no longer be
able to attend an event being held for the reception children at their
primary school. We put out a request to our Drama students and
Deputy Head Girl Mary Prescott instantly jumped at the chance to
save the day. In the days leading up to the event, Mary purchased a
Cinderella dress, procured herself a blonde wig and teamed up with
Mrs St John to send an animated picture of herself as Cinderella
alongside Prince Charming and the Fairy Godmother. Miss K Sage,
Reception class teacher and Assistant Head at Cuddington Croft, sent
us a copy of the newspaper article given to her students where it
detailed the loss of Cinderella’s slipper which held magical powers.
The students at Cuddington Croft searched long and hard for the
slipper in the playground, eventually discovering it and they
immediately sent a video on Twitter, telling Cinderella to come and
retrieve it. Cinderella heard the call and, just after break time on Friday, appeared! Cinderella was so thankful for the
return of her shoe that she cast a magic spell and all of the Reception children’s clothes magically appeared in
Miss Sage’s cupboard! Before heading back to her Prince Charming, Cinderella posed for a few photos, answered the
children’s questions and even joined in in a playground banquet.

My Trip to Chantilly by Daniela Bouferrache (Year 12)
On 13 February, I was kindly invited to spend a week in Chantilly, France with a host
family- who are associated with the Epsom Rotary Club Twinning Association. In
addition, the main purpose of my trip was to improve my French speaking and orally
have a better chance of succeeding in my French at A level. On the day following my
arrival, I went to the town church for Mass for the beginning of Lent, and then I joined
the other volunteers and delivered church newspapers. Furthermore, during my stay, I
went to several places, such as the famous Castle
of Chantilly where Le Duc d’Aumale lived and,
during my tour of the castle, I learnt a lot about the
history of Chantilly (twinned with Epsom). The
castle comprised many famous and incredible
paintings and statues; it was also interconnected to
many vast and lusciously green gardens and lakes
where a variety of animals such as swans were seen. Moreover, on the Tuesday
we went to Montmarte, and we visited many other beautiful churches on our
walk, (and had lunch at a typical French restaurant, which served delicious food) - however none compared to the
sheer beauty of Le Sacré-Cœur. Nonetheless I cannot deny the fact that we were immensely exhausted after having
climbed 300 steps to reach the top of the church, but the view on Paris made the journey worth it!
Then, on Thursday, we went to a quarry called ‘La Maison de la Pierre’. The
quarry is very famous as the stone in it has been used to create many astonishing
landmarks, such as the Great British Museum (the stone is called ‘La Pierre de
Saint-Maximin’). Not only did I visit many wonderful places, I tried a variety of
new and traditional French meals, including ‘La Raclette’ (melted cheese trays),
and typical charcuterie and soups (like the Potage - tomato soup).
I was privileged to stay with a very lovely and welcoming couple; and two of
their grandsons also came to stay with them during this time who were from
Rouen. We all got on really well so I was able to really enjoy my trip. I became
fond of them so I did feel quite sad to leave them and take the Eurostar back
home on 20 February. This was an
experience that I will never forget.
Personally, I have become more
confident in speaking French on a
daily basis. We are still in contact and
I hope that either they will visit me in England or I will see them again in
France.

Tech Camp Workshop On 9 March, my class and I took part in the Tech Camp Workshop. Here, we learnt how to program a robot to do simple instructions, eg go forward then turn around and come back. We had an instructor who was very helpful and Phoebe helped do a demonstration on how to program your robot. I was partnered with Lois and we took turns to wire up motors, tiny computers, a battery pack and wheels so that it was able to move. Once we had completed this, the instructor stamped our pieces of paper and we were able to move on and add whatever we wanted to our robot. Lois and I decided to program a sensor so that the robot stopped when it sensed an object in front of it and it was able to turn around and carry on in a different direction. This meant that we could turn it on and it would be able to explore the room. Next, we added a buzzer so that it buzzed when the sensors detected and object in their path. Shortly after we had successfully managed to get the buzzer working, we installed a light that turned off when the sensors detected something in front of them. In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and both my genius partner and I learnt a lot. I would recommend that other years do this workshop because it is very beneficial and will help you if you want to get a job in programing when you are older.
