End of Term Edition Friday 18 December 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been wonderful to lighten these darkest days of the year with some genuine moments of celebration this week.

Each year group has marked their own individual and collective successes in assemblies each morning this week and

the tutor group in each year group with the most achievement points have been awarded their afternoon tea

experience, which they have greatly enjoyed. We held our annual Senior Prizegiving on Tuesday evening. It was lovely

to welcome back many past students who are thriving at university, along with our current Year 12 and 13s to mark

their fantastic exam performances. Emma Ryan, a former student currently working for Lockheed Martin as a research

engineer, gave a lively and entertaining speech about the impact that Rosebery has had on her life as a scientist and

the opportunities that a career in STEM-based industries provide. Indeed, on the day that Major Tim Peake reached

the International Space Station, it was fascinating to hear how one of her experiments is going to be sent to the ISS for

the astronauts to work on next year.

Year 11 have now completed their Mock Exams and must be congratulated on their conduct and attitude throughout

this stressful period. They have been involved in two enterprise and business days this week, where they have been

receiving help and advice from representatives of industry and commerce about job applications, CV writing and

interview techniques. They have then competed for a given job, with each student being given an interview with one

of the external representatives. They have performed very well and the representatives commented on what a

pleasure it was to spend time with this talented and articulate group. Sincere thanks must also be extended to all who

gave up their time to come to work with and interview our students; we really are grateful for your support.

Remembering Natalie

At the conclusion of our beautiful carol service on Thursday evening, we held a retiring collection in memory of Natalie.

The Scott family have established a Justgiving page to raise funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation. If you would

like to make a donation, in addition to the one we will be making as a school, you will find the information here:

New Year; new uniform!

Can I make a plea that, over the Christmas break, some attention is given to renewing uniform where necessary? We

have a number of students who have not been in the correct shoes, have not had a blue or black coat and are therefore

wearing hoodies, and persist in wearing nail varnish and jewellery. Your support in ensuring your daughter has

everything she needs for her return on 6 January 6 is much appreciated.

As we reach the end of another term, we have to bid a sad farewell to some colleagues who will not be returning in

January. Miss Nicholson, who is currently Head of Year 11, but was also been our Head of Biology until last Summer,

is relocating to the south coast. Ms Saul will be taking on the Head of Year 11 position from January. Mrs Biggs, who

has been covering the maternity leave of Mrs Fassam in Sociology, also leaves us at the end of term. We are very

grateful to both members of staff, who have been highly supportive of all the students with whom they have worked.

We welcome back Mrs Fassam, who returned as Head of Sociology this week.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their hard work across this term, to express my gratitude to

governors for their continued service to the school, and to mark once again the commitment, kindness, dedication

and humour that our students demonstrate every day, which means they are such a pleasure to work with. Many

thanks to you all for your continuing support and may your Christmas break be restful and restorative. We look

forward to seeing all students back to school at 8.30am on Wednesday 6 January 2016. Merry Christmas and a very

happy New Year.

As we approach the end of the term, I would like to take a moment to reflect on some of the outstanding achievements that students have achieved within the Drama & Performing Arts Department at Rosebery. GCSE Drama students in Year 11 have completed 60% of their GCSE and have explored many workshops, including the horrors from The Woman in Black. Year 11 Performing Arts students were taken to The Pineapple Dance Studios and The National Theatre for a Performing Arts Tour in London, including a practical workshop led by a professional dancer. Here’s what some of the students had to say; “The Performing Arts Tour was inspirational. I really enjoyed visiting the Pineapple Dance Studios with the class. I learnt a different style of dance that I had never experienced before that widened my knowledge. We had so much fun learning a new dance as a class because we were around people who had the same passion as us. I am now considering going into the industry because of my experience in Pineapple Dance Studios. The tour of the National Theatre gave me an insight into the world behind the curtains. The effort that goes into putting on a production and set makes me appreciate the business even more. It also made me realise the other opportunities and professions you can go into other than just dancing, singing and drama.” Alannah Pedro, Lauren Roberts & Gemma Lee

More recently, proud parents and staff were entertained with four very different Shakespeare performances, led and directed by the Sixth Form House Prefects, for this year’s Shakespeare Drama Festival, with Sapphire House as the overall winners (pictured). Also in November, Frantic Assembly came in to deliver a practical workshop based on the physical theatre from the West End’s Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Just this week, Year 13 Drama & Theatre Studies students completed their devised practical examinations, based on a stimulus stemmed from the refugee crisis. Well done to everyone for what you have achieved so far in just one term. I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2016. French Students get Arty!

In the latter part of the Autumn Term, Year 7 students learnt about the French painter, Henri Rousseau, during their French lessons as part of our Culture and Internationalism strand of the new KS3 assessment criteria.

Students had to design their own picture in the style of Henri Rousseau and then describe what they had drawn in French. Many students produced stunning pictures, which really captured Rousseau's eye-catching style. Miss Rundle from the Art Department came to judge the pictures and Ms Wright from the Languages Department judged the descriptions.

Here are the winning entries along with some photos of our Rousseau art gallery. We hope you like them as much as we do and well done to all the runners up too! Winner of artwork - Xanthe Bradshaw 7DX (pictured) Winner of description - Caroline Young 7SY (below) Runners up of artwork - Millie Frow 7EX, Beth Young 7RY, Aimee Taylor 7EY, Clara Tighe 7RY.
