End of Term Friday 17 July 2015
Dear Parents and Carers,
The end of term has finally arrived and I am sure your daughter is looking forward to a break from school!
The last two weeks could not have been busier, incorporating the Summer Fair, which raised over £2500;
our Celebration Evening where 155 students received a variety of awards for their progress, achievement
and contribution to the school; Open Evening, at which our students attracted fulsome praise for their work
as fantastic ambassadors for the school; trips to the Battlefields, to the V&A, to Brighton and to Thorpe Park,
all of which were greatly enjoyed by all involved. Amazingly, 180 Year 10 students have also completed their
Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition and many of them also performed at their Performing Arts Showcase.
We concluded the week with our annual Sports’ Day and a celebration of achievement in our final year and
school assemblies which was a very fitting way to end such a positive year.
Further recognition for Rosebery: Inclusion Quality Mark
I am delighted to report that, after a rigorous two-day assessment, during which time lessons were observed
and numerous students, governors, parents and staff were interviewed, we have been awarded the Inclusion
Quality Mark. The IQM uses a standard for assessing schools against a national framework for inclusion and
our report is fulsome in its praise for the way stating the way in which, ‘students come first at the school and
everything possible is done to support them’, where ‘student behaviour and attitudes are exemplary and they
are able get on with their learning without being disrupted in lessons’, and ‘where leadership is determined
and is relentless…and is extremely effective in pushing the school forward and leading it in the right direction
in its journey towards outstanding’. We are thrilled that student, staff, parents and governors have been
recognised in this assessment and I look forward to sharing the full report with you in due course.
Farewells to staff
As always at this time of year a number of staff leave our community. All have given a great deal to our
students, inspiring a love of their subject and supporting students both in the classroom and in their extra-
curricular activities. This year we warmly thank and wish the very best to: Miss Francis (Science), Miss Ball
(English), Miss Money (English) and Miss Busuttin (English), who are returning to Australia; to Miss Pettet
(Music) and Miss James (Maths), who are moving to promoted positions elsewhere; to Mr Campbell
(Maths), who is moving to Spain; to Mrs Cameron, Mrs Walcott (SEND) and Mr Burgess (Art Technician),
who are leaving for new opportunities; and to Mr Naemi (Maths) and Mrs Robertshaw (Assistant
Headteacher), who are retiring from teaching after long and distinguished careers.

I would be very grateful for parents’ support in ensuring your daughter arrives for school in the correct
uniform at the start of the year.
Shoes should be black leather. Vans or trainer/plimsoll style shoes are not permitted.
All piercings should be removed apart from one earring in each earlobe, if desired. If your daughter
intends to have her nose or upper ear pierced, she will need to do so right at the start of the holiday,
as she will not be permitted to wear these adornments at school and will be asked to remove them.
Acrylic nails and hair wraps should be removed before the start of term.
Rings, necklaces and bracelets should all be left at home.
The new blazer and the new darker jumper are optional for students in Years 8-11. The blazer is
compulsory for all students in Year 7.
All marked or ripped uniform should be replaced.
Finally, I would like to thank all the teaching and support staff as well as the governing body for their hard
work and support this year. It has been a pleasure and privilege to work with such a lively, intellectually
curious, kind and hard working group of students this year, and I am also very grateful for all the support we
have received from parents of students across the school. The PSA have raised thousands of pounds for us
as a result of the dedicated efforts of Susan Blake and her small but perfectly formed team, and the Parent

Science Club News
Congratulations go to Natalia Chemaitelli, Jasmine Helm-Stovell and Nia Thomas who
receive a British Science Association Bronze award for their investigation into surface
tension effects in different liquids.
Well done also to Isabel Anderson and Molly Purvis, who achieved a British Science
Association Silver award for their project that determined the effects of a stimulant
(caffeine) on the heart rate of the water flea (Daphnia).
All these girls, plus the other Science Club students who are in the process of writing up their
projects, have worked really hard throughout the year and shown great enthusiasm for going deeper into
Science.
Well done, girls!
In other Science news, Jasmine Helm-
Stovell’s entry to the Physiological
Society’s ‘Women in Physiology’ poster
competition has been short-listed for
final review at the Society’s annual
conference, Physiology 2015.
Jasmine’s innovative poster focused on
the work of May-Britt Moser. It
included detail on Moser’s research
into the brain's mechanism for
representing space and was set against
a background that reflected the dress
design that Moser wore for her Noble
prize acceptance speech – the pattern
of a grid neuron!
Musicathon 2015
Thank you to all the students, staff and parents who
helped to make this year’s event such a success!
Full details on amount raised will be available in
September.

Alumnae 40th Anniversary Reunion
It is always a great pleasure for us to welcome back our alumnae. Our students are delighted to take our
visitors on a tour of the school so they can see the facilities, reminisce and catch up with old friends.
On 4 July, we welcomed back a group of 14 alumnae who were students here 40 years ago, in the late 1960s
and early 1970s. Miss Yeo, who taught them Science at the time but is now retired, was also able to join
them, which they greatly appreciated. The ladies had decided to enjoy the fun of the fair and attend our
PSA Summer Festival, soaking up the atmosphere, listening to the music of the bands, touring round the
various stalls and amusements and having some refreshments. They were then taken around the school to
admire our new buildings and also recognise others which had not changed over the years, including the
boards in the Hall inscribed with hundreds of students’ names.
The ladies then settled down to swap old photographs and delve into the school archives. They all had
stories to tell of the ‘old days’ at Rosebery and were often in fits of laughter as they saw how they used to
look and recognised and remembered old teachers and classmates. They all had fond memories to share of
their days at Rosebery but were also extremely interested to see how the school is now. They were delighted
that the fair gave them the opportunity to chat to some current students and parents; they remarked how
enthusiastic, happy and eloquent the girls are when speaking about their school.
It is always fascinating to learn about our alumnae’s lives and careers after Rosebery. Many have travelled
far and wide, some settling in other continents and speaking several languages. Among the group on
Saturday were teachers, administrators and even an ambassador. Several of them had daughters who had
also attended the school so they certainly view Rosebery as part of their family.
The ladies’ finished their visit by having tea at The Harvester where two more ladies were able to catch up
with the group and where, I’m sure, the reminiscing and laughter continued well into the afternoon. I was
delighted to have met such a lively, friendly and fun-loving group of alumnae and perhaps we will have the
pleasure of welcoming them back for their next anniversary celebration.
This photograph was taken
when the ladies were
enjoying time together in the
Quad at the Festival.

Student Leadership
The following students have achieved a great deal this year as they have worked towards their Leadership Awards. The Award is an excellent opportunity for the school to recognise the work our students do every day as they lead others and drive forward their interests and passions. Students have received their awards for activities ranging from organising charity events to taking sections of lessons. I hope to see many more students become involved next year. Year 7 Activities
Year 7 have been involved in a variety of activities
over the course of the week which have tested
their resilience and strength. On Monday, they
were visited by a group called Challenger

sports and challenges for them to engage
with. The students did this despite the weather being far from perfect!

tomatoes, in the way that Nepalese farmers would, without squashing them! Amazingly, Rosebery managed
to stay relatively tomato free!
The girls then spent Tuesday undertaking a Dragons’ Den project, in which they created their own products
and pitches. The teachers very much enjoyed being a dragon for the day too! Wednesday was also a day
spent investigating and creating time capsules. Overall, a very creative set of days for Year 7!

Year 8 Fashion Designers! Year 8 have spent three days working as design teams to create show-stopping paper ball gowns. On Monday we visited the V&A Museum Fashion, Costume, Sculpture and Jewellery rooms for inspiration, then teams of five worked tirelessly over Tuesday and Wednesday before showcasing their creations in a fashion show finale. Once again, I have been amazed and inspired by the originality and professionalism of many groups, who took the ‘ambitious’ brief to a whole new level. Working only with paper and limited tools, the catwalk was packed with textures, shapes and patterns that could have been produced by top adult designers. It was incredibly hard to pick an overall winner, but look out in the main foyer next term for the First, Second and Third prize ball gowns on display! Mrs Wiggins, Head of Art
Year 9 Activities
The students spent their
Activities Week focused on
the centenary and World
War One commemorations.
They have experienced all
kinds of activities, from talks by the 10th Essex Living History
Group, to designing their own camouflage and resources for
our Year 5 visitors from Bandon Hill Primary School. The
week made the students really think about the impact of the
First World War and how those involved were affected by
events.

Year 10 Activities
During Activities Week, the majority of
Year 10 have been completing their Bronze
Duke of Edinburgh final expedition in the
Surrey hills. The girls in school have also had
an action packed few days. Monday was our
community day, where girls completed a
number of projects including a World War 1 memorial
garden, a large Art mural and a comfortable group study
area in Social Sciences. Tuesday involved three ex-military
personnel putting the girls through their paces. The girls
did team skiing, an assault course and tug of war. The
reward for all of the girls was a day at Thorpe Park on
Wednesday, with lots of rides and fun had by all.
Lucy Nicholson, Head of Year 10, Head of Biology
Year 12 Activities
On Monday morning, despite the rain, Rosebery’s Sixth
Form took over Stamford Green in Epsom, to hold a day
of British Military Fitness. This was the day that most
girls were dreading and was a topic of conversation
before activities week around school. From the moment
the girls arrived, they were inspired, resilient and, not
forgetting, competitive. The day consisted of warm up
activities such as carrying tyres across the field, team
balances, blind folding obstacle course, which facilitated
the new tutor groups to bond. As the day progressed,
the groups took part in tug of war, obstacle courses,
team work challenges and we finished with a large
assault course, including the highlight of crawling through a large camouflage net! The girls carried on
regardless of the weather and I did not hear one moan throughout the whole day. The smiles at the end of
the day were a picture!
On Tuesday, coaches took us into Brighton for an adventurous day of site-seeing.
Groups of students were able to have some free time on the pier and to walk
around the shops and the lanes. The coach journeys were very quiet as the girls
were so tired, but a great day was had in the sun, despite having to walk with
aching muscles.

On Wednesday, the Sixth Form turned to business dress for an Innov8 day of business enterprise. In small
groups, the girls competed to design a product or service that is lacking in the current market. Each of the
17 groups came up with unique ideas, ranging from apps for mobile phones,
thermometers for baths, self-hole punching ring binders and many more.
Congratulations to Anna, Beth, Lara, Lauren, Connie and Rameen for winning
the overall best product.
May I take this opportunity to wish Year 12s a restful summer break and thank parents for your ongoing
support. Fingers crossed for you all when you open your results in August!

Rosebery Sixth Form News As we reach the end of a long but fruitful academic year at Rosebery Sixth Form, (and another brilliant Year12 Activities Week comes to a close), it seems a perfect opportunity to reflect on what makes Rosebery such a successful and happy place to study Post 16. I have spoken to our Year 11 students several times this year about what Rosebery offers at Sixth Form, but I am aware that some students still have decisions to make regarding their destinations from September. After my first year as Director of Sixth Form, I would like to summarise some of the aspects that make Rosebery such a special place:
A caring and supportive pastoral system where students are well known and respected as individual young women by a familiar and highly experienced staff.
Rosebery Sixth Form is not so big that students get 'lost' in the system and simply become Year 12 and 13 pupils - at Rosebery, girls are 'Sixth Formers' and are treated as such from September.
A dedicated Sixth Form Careers Advisor and a comprehensive programme of information, advice and guidance for university, apprenticeship and employment opportunities. Our level of commitment to IAG is unique and something to be proud about.
A range of leadership opportunities for our senior students (from the Head Girls to Community Sports Leaders, from Prefects to Paired Readers) that provide skills and experience for next steps and later life.
A broad and diverse range of enrichment activities aimed at young women and available to all. This includes Young Enterprise, Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, Extended Project Qualification as well as successful sports teams and music and drama opportunities. As you can see in the Activities Week photos, Sixth Form is a lot of fun!
A wide range of A Level subject options in an era where many institutions are narrowing their curriculum offer.
Exceptional exam results that compare more to local independent schools than state schools nationally. Departments and our Sixth Form Team work tirelessly to monitor, intervene and support individuals where required.

Encore! Encore! – Year 7 French Play Performances
Last week, Year 7 performed a French play to the members of the Leadership Team. The X side did ‘J’ai du
Talent’ but the Y side did ‘Vive la Révolution’.
Our class performed ‘J’ai du Talent’, based on ‘France Has Got Talent’, which contained some entertaining
acts. In 7DX, the three acts who competed to win were: Lucy and her dog Mia who danced to ‘Who let the
dogs out?’; Dance Stars (Yasmine, Kiera, Charlie and Frankie), who had a very humorous dance act; and finally
Louisa and Amelia, who gave a very emotive poetry reading. As well as contestants, we had an encouraging
crowd along with six judges who had a tough decision to make when it came to the winner. To top it off, we
had six girls who played the roles of mini Ant and Decs!
After our tiring play on the hottest day of the year, we were fortunate enough to be able to watch 7RYs
production of ‘Vive la Révolution’, which gave us a historical insight into the French Revolution. The strong
singing of the chorus made it a performance to remember along with the realistic props and costumes. Even
Ms Allen (who, apart from being our Headteacher is also a History teacher) said that she learnt something
new from watching their performance!
It was a very enjoyable experience with our friends and teachers which helped us show off what we had
learnt since starting Year 7. We hope to do it again sometime!

District Athletics:
Both teams that competed performed extremely well, considering the adverse weather conditions on the day. Our U15 team
came in 6th place and our U17 team came in 4th place.
We also had some brilliant individual successes at the event:
U17 200 M Freya Martin
Javelin Georgia Hassell
Cricket:
Year 7 and 8 students competed in the U13 Surrey Outdoor tournament. The first competition took place at Cranleigh School. All
students participated extremely well and got through to the Semi-final, only to lose out by a few runs. Outstanding performances
were made by Issy Berry and Erin Andrew throughout the day. As the team got through to the semi-final, they also made it through
to the overall finals; this took place in Ewell on the 1 July. All members of the team were exceptional and they got through to the
final, and finished in second place. Well done to all participants!
Surrey Youth Games:
Rosebery had 78 students represent Epsom and Ewell who came 1st. Well done Mark Hill at the Council, who oversaw the team
development.
Thank you to our Sports Ambassadors, who promoted the Surrey Youth Games throughout the School.

Sixth Form Rounders v Glyn On Wednesday 1 and 8 July, beautiful warm and sunny afternoons up at Priest Hill, the Rosebery
Sixth Form were challenged by Glyn to a rounders match. The Glyn students were very keen to play as they had heard the Rosebery
girls were highly regarded in their skill as rounders players. Glyn boys and nine girls from Rosebery played a very hard game, with
some excellent batting from both sides; the fielding was also very impressive.
A lot of fun and laughter was had by both teams and spectators, witnessing some spectacular dropped catches, missed throws
and the odd clash and bumping into one another as they ran full pelt around the posts.
The eventual winners were Glyn by just half a rounder. Many thanks to Mrs Mabbott from Glyn for arranging the venue for the
match. We look forward to the re-match next year.

PARTNERSHIP DANCE SHOW
This week, our Rosebery Dance Club took part in the Epsom and Ewell Partnership
Dance show at The Epsom Playhouse. The theme this year was 80s music and all of the
schools were fantastic. Rosebery chose the Janet Jackson song ‘Rhythm Nation’ and
gave a great performance. The students looked brilliant in their costumes and were
full of energy on stage. It is a testament to demonstrate how hard they work all year
round. Well done to Sian Walk, Jasmine Butt, Charlotte Dendy, Maggie Sullivan, Millie
Akers, Aimee Gumbs, Izzy Robertson, Charlotte Lynagh, Amelia Evans, Cara Evans,
Rachel White, Briony Salter and Lucy Jalland.
INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS – SUMMER TERM
ISHBEL AND ANNA ZURRMOND – SAILING
Ishbel participated in the National 4.2 Topper Championships on 13-
14 June, and was 1st Girl and 8th overall.
Anna helms in a double handed Feva and sailed in the National
Championships up in Rutland. This was a three-day event over May
half term, in some incredibly windy conditions with masts breaking ……
Both Anna and her crew did very well, and came 8th in the Silver fleet.
Both girls are going on to sail in the World Championships this
summer; Ishbel will be sailing in Lake Garda and Anna in Germany.
Well done from the PE Department.
FREYA MARTIN – ATHLETICS
Just to report back on Sat's Surrey Schools Athletics Championships.
Freya qualified for the 200m IG final finishing 3rd in her heat (27.70
sec PB?) and then 5th in the final (27.79 - stronger headwind). In the final, the top three were all club athletes. As such, she has qualified for the next round to represent Surrey in inter-counties/ESAA champs. The next meet is next weekend; however, which we've declined availability due to exams. Then there is English school champs in July. Well done from the PE Department.
ALISSA MILLS - TRAMPOLINING Alissa Mills (10EX) had great success in a recent trampolining competition in Peterborough, in which she (along with another Year 10 Rosebery student, Emily Chambers-Rolfe, had been selected to represent the South East region (Surrey, Sussex & Kent). Alissa came fourth, achieving the second highest routine score in her second jump, and qualified for July's National Finals in Telford.
Well done from the PE Department.

ERIN ANDREW – WATER POLO
Article written by Erin:
I have been playing water polo for many years, successfully representing my club (Sutton
and Cheam), Surrey and the London region all in different age groups. Last year, I was
invited to train at Crystal Palace as part of the regional training centre (RTC) every Friday
evening. I represented the London region in a tournament in Liverpool last year where
I was spotted by one of the national water polo courses. In January, I was invited to
attend a trial in Cardiff for the national talent programme (now known as England
Talent).
Following a very tough weekend, despite falling into the youngest age group for the talent programme, I was one of only 12 girls
from all over the UK born in 2002 to be invited into the squad. In addition to my regular swimming training, I now attend water
polo training at Crystal Palace twice a week. I also attend monthly training at Cardiff as part of the England talent programme.
The weekends are very long and tiring, especially when having to get to the pool at 6.30am on the Sunday morning after a full day
of training the previous day. There a two or three training sessions each day along with poolside strength and conditioning. At
half term, our squad has a training camp in Spain and, in the summer, I am attending a camp in Milfield.
If you want any more information, you can look on the water polo page on www.britishswimming.org.
Well done from the PE Department.
MOLLY CHARTRES - RUGBY
At Sutton and Epsom’s Rugby Club Prize-giving, Molly Chartres 8EX was awarded ‘Player of the Year, Girls
Youth Team under 13’s’. She has been playing and training with Sutton and Epsom RFC since competing in
the Surrey Youth Games last year and has progressed from touch rugby to full contact. She really enjoys it.
All the girls put the time and effort in, working hard to do the best they can. Team spirit is great, the girls all
support each other, and the coaching team) and club are fantastic.
Well done from the PE Department.
STARTASTIC GYMNASTICS AFTER SCHOOL CLUB
Amar won Gold in grade 4
Victoria won Gold in grade 5
Annabel won Silver in grade 5
Molly and Jess did extremely well for their first competition in grade 2.
This wasn't a school competition but a recreational club. They train 2+ hours a week throughout
the year and the girls learnt so much in two terms.
Well done from the PE Department.
