17 December 2017 ST. STEPHEN MARTYR CHURCH Hari Minggu Adven III Preparing for the third Sunday of Advent, we find ourselves in the opening chapter (and prologue) of the Gospel according to John. We met John (called the Baptist in the Synoptic Gospels) in week one of Advent. In this week’s Gospel we learn more about the man, this time from his testimony about himself. (Our Gospel author is, according to tradition, not this John but the apostle John, the youngest apostle and brother of the apostle James.) We learn first that John the Baptist was a man sent from God, not as the Light that was to come into the world but rather as a witness to that Lightthe herald who would announce the appearance of the Messiah to Israel. “The Light,” a reference to Jesus as the Messiah, was coming into the world as Jesus would soon appear at the shoreline of the Jordan River to be baptized by John. In this account John is challenged by two separate groups of religious leaders who send delegations from Jerusalem to determine if John considers himself the Messiah of God or not. The first delegation to arrive are priests and Levites who are sent from “the Jews.” These “Jews” in the Gospel of John were the elites among the party of the Sadducees who administered the Temple and its sacrificial system. Pilgrims were fording the Jordan River on their way to Jerusalem. News quickly spread that a charismatic prophet had appeared in the wilderness and people were also leaving Jerusalem to visit the Baptist at the water’s edge. This delegation asks John who he is, or more specifically if he considers himself to be the Messiah. John answers with an emphatic No! “Who are you then?” They need an answer to report back to their superiors. Are you Elijah returned from heaven? Are you “the Prophet,” the one promised by Moses that Jewish people believed would appear before the coming of the Messiah? Again John responds in the negative. Well then, who are you? What do you have to say about yourself? John responds by quoting Isaiah 40:3 . He is a voice crying out in the wilderness to make straight the paths of the Lord. This work would be important if you were preparing to welcome a distinguished guest into your city or village. John is on the job. The second delegation arrives, this one sent by the party of the people, the Pharisees. They learn from the first group that John does not identify himself as the Messiah or as Elijah or as the Prophet. Their initial question reveals their befuddlement. If you do not consider yourself the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, then why are you baptizing? What is the purpose of this symbolic dipping in the waters of the Jordan? And why are so many people leaving Jerusalem and coming here to you? They are confused and also have to report back to their leaders. John sends them away with specific knowledge that the Messiah is coming, and that when he appears not even John would be worthy to untie the thong of his sandal. The stage is set, anticipation sets in, the game is afoot. Jesus is about to be revealed for the first time in the Gospel. The opening verses of this week’s passage recall the first word God speaks in the Genesis account of creation: “Light!” We translate that single word into a phrase, “let there be light,” for the sake of narrative continuity, but in Hebrew the word is simply spoken and “Light!” comes into existence. That light was good and its effect was felt as the darkness of the abyss fled before it (Genesis 1:1 4). Later in this Gospel Jesus proclaims himself the “light of the world” and declares that whoever follows him, “will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12) . Jesus and the “light” of Genesis are one and the same. John knows this about Jesus and understands his role to testify and point people toward that light so that, as Messiah, Jesus can reveal to the world the kingdom of God. John came to testify to the light. He was not the light. That light was coming into the world. We also are called to testify to that light. When we give our lives to Jesus and follow the light in the way that we live our lives, we become living demonstrations of the transformation that is possible when light enters our life and darkness is forced to flee. We are born again, symbolically leaving the darkness of the womb to enter the bright light of day. There is no going back, only forward, onward toward the light! Preparing for the third Sunday of Advent, we find ourselves in the opening chapter (and prologue) of the Gospel according to John.
