Mercantilism—A nation seeks to increase wealth & power Tobacco, lumber
America was an extension of England’s economy
But, the goal of the colonists was to become self-sufficient
Conflict Begins… Navigation Acts (1651):
No country could trade with the colonies unless through English ships
All vessels must be run by crews that are ¾ English or Colonial
Certain products only exported to England (Sugar, tobacco, molasses, etc)
Almost all goods traded between colonies and Europe must first pass through English ports

British and French Ended with Treaty of Paris (1763)

Proclamation Line of 1763—prohibited colonists from settling West of App. Mountains

French & Indian War = Big Debt Big Debt = Prime Minister raised taxes
for colonists
Taxes were raised and smugglers were tried in British courts Sugar Act Stamp Act Townshend Act
Conflict Begins… “No Taxation Without Representation!” Boston Massacre—British soldier fires on a
mob, kills 5 Americans Partially repealed Townshend Acts Boston Tea Party—refused to lift tax on tea
& gave rights to British company So, Americans dumped it all into Boston Harbor
