Chamber Buckswinner at Panhandle
Area Community ExpoCongratulations go out to Stacy Frodl,
owner of Sticks-N-Stones, Etc. winner of the Panhandle Area Chamber of Com-merce Chamber Bucks. Stacy’s ticket was drawn at the 2011 Community Expoheld at the Tri County High School Fri-day, April 29th. To get into the drawing,Stacy turned in her receipts from shop-ping Panhandle Area Chamber member businesses. For each receipt validated,
she received an entry into the Chamber’s
drawing. As the winner, she received $250 in
Chamber Bucks Gift Certi cates, redeem -able at Panhandle Area Chamber of Com-merce members. “The Panhandle AreaCommunity Expo is a great opportunity for my business to showcase it’s prod-ucts. Winning the drawing was icing onthe cake!” says Stacy.
In past years, the Chamber held draw-ings for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, each re-ceiving a cash prize. Once the money was
awarded, there was no assurance that thefunds would be spent in our local com-munities. To ensure this, the ChamberBucks keeps the money local and helpsour businesses.
“The concept and participation wassuccessful” stated Marianne VanBen-nekom, Chamber Director. “As a Cham-
ber, we are looking for ways to add valueto our membership. Keeping the drawingaward local keeps dollars in our commu-nities.”
Look for this promotion to be offeredagain next year. When we shop local, ev-eryone wins!
If you are interested in joining theChamber, be sure to check us out at
ww.panhandlechamber.com or call theChamber at (231) 937-5681.

Artist Information:For nearly three decades, Blue Öyster
Cult has been thrilling fans of rock world-wide with powerful albums loaded withclassic songs. Blue Öyster Cult occupies aunique place in rock history because it’sone of very few bands to earn both genu-ine mainstream critical acclaim as well ascommercial success. The band is often cit-
ed as a major in uence by other acts suchas Metallica. BÖC was also listed in VH1’s
countdown of the greatest hard rock bandsof all time.
Upon the release of BÖC’s self-titleddebut album in 1972, the band was praisedfor its catchy-yet-heavy music and lyricsthat could be provocative, terrifying, funny or ambiguous, often all in the same song.BÖC’s canon includes three stone-coldclassic songs that will waft through the cos-mos long after the sun has burned out: Thetruly haunting “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”from 1976’s Agents of Fortune, the pum-meling “Godzilla” from 1977’s Spectres andthe hypnotically melodic “Burnin’ for You”from 1981’s Fire of Unknown Origin.
With Special Guest Mid-Life Crisis- MLC is a popular 8 piece Grand Rapids band featuring 7 singers and a full horn
section. Loving music from the 60’s and70’s, MLC has been rocking West Michigan
for 9 years. MLC has released 2 original al- bums, including “It’s All Good” releasedin 2006 and “It’s Always Something” re-leased in 2009. They also love performingall their classic rock favorites. MLC has been named “Best Band in Grand Rapids”6 years in a row by Grand Rapids Maga-zine, won 3 “Golden Townie Awards” fromOn-The-Town Magazine for Best Band, and been named “Top Band in Grand Rap-ids” by the Grand Rapids Press Tops of GR Award. MLC’s music is played on local ra-dio, such as LAV, WYCE and others, along with numerous television performances.

in 2011.These facility developments
along with ongoing enhance-ments and additions to our pa-tient service offerings has led tosustained growth and improvedquality and safety across thehospital,” said Spectrum HealthUnited Hospital President, PaulBonis. “We have seen signi cantincreases in our patient volumesacross all of our service lines.
The number of yearly emer-gency room visits at UnitedHospital has increased fromapproximately 12,500 visits in2003 to an expected 30,000 vis-its by 2012.
When United hospital wasconstructed in 1952, the over-
whelming nature of care wasinpatient based and the hospi-tal was designed to accommo-date this mode of care. Today,
because of new technology andadvanced medical techniques,70 percent of United Hospital’s
business is now performed onan outpatient basis. This reno-
vation will make the necessary changes to address this evolu-tion in healthcare, allowinghospital outpatient areas to bemore ef cient, private and pa -tient friendly.
Bonis believes this expan-sion will set the stage for furthergrowth and economic develop-ment in the Greenville area.
“This is a necessary and sig-ni cant investment in our com -munity at a critical juncture forGreenville and our surroundingcommunities. Investing now in the core services of our com-munity such as our schools andour hospitals, even in these dif-
cult economic times, will pay
huge dividends for the growthand prosperity of our commu-nity well into the future,” saidBonis.
Project Scope: SpectrumHealth United HospitalEmergency Department
The emergency departmentat Spectrum Health UnitedHospital will be upgraded andenlarged in order to meet thedemands of existing patient vol-ume as well as provide capacity for expected future growth.
The project includes reno-
vations of both the existing5,095 square feet as well as thecreation of an additional 7,611square feet to support neededtreatment rooms and supportspace. The additional spacehas been designed to maximizethe use of available property, directly adjacent to the currentemergency department.
The expansion will increasecurrent patient treatment areasfrom 11 to 28. Additionally, theemergency department expan-sion and renovation will in-
clude:Three trauma bays with di-
rect access from the ambulanceentrance
Two gynecology rooms An orthopedic treatment
roomSixteen private exam rooms
An isolation room A patient holding roomFour observation rooms
A new faster and safer CTAlltreatment bays will be private. The 140 square foot rooms willinclude a caregiver zone, a pa-
tient zone and a family zone. The exam rooms will be de-signed to maximize exibility patient convenience and opera-tional ef ciency.
An additional, crucial aspectof the plan includes the reloca-tion of the CT scanner and otherimaging equipment to spacedirectly accessible by the ED.This will minimize time neededto provide emergency patients
with vital diagnostic services re-quired.
Project Scope: SpectrumHealth United Hospital Pa-tient Access and DiagnosticImaging
Patient registration will berelocated closer to the frontdoors of the hospital. The goalis to make patient registrationmore accessible and con den -tial. Patient check in and regis-tration will be completed in theprivacy of spacious enclosed ar-eas ensuring privacy and com-fort during this process.
Diagnostic imaging willundergo a complete transfor-mation in order to support thedepartment’s current and futureneeds. Rooms and hallways will
be expanded and designed toaccommodate new technology and increase patient ow. Thenew imaging area also includesa dedicated women’s center, complete with separate chang-ing and waiting areas to createa more digni ed and privatetreatment area for female pa-tients. Additionally, dedicatedspaces for digital mammogra-phy, stereo-tactic biopsy, Dexa(densitometry) and ultrasound
will be included within the women’s center.

The ordeal of buying a newcar. You know you’re notsupposed to walk out pay-ing sticker price. But you’rethinking “I’m no good atbargaining.” And, “I alwaysend up buying sticker price!”It’s time to stop that kind of thinking by learning the wayout of the ordeal of buying. You have to bargain up, notdown.
The key is up. The key tobuying any new major ticketitem is to nd out what theseller paid for it, start fromthere, and bargain up. Find-ing the dealer’s wholesaleprice is something you, andyou alone, have to do, andyou have to make sure you
get correct, up to date in-formation. Once you havethe dealer’s wholesale, or“invoice” price, on the basepackage and on all the fac-tory-installed options andpackages you want, you’ll beable to gure out the dealer’swholesale cost for the verynew car you’re looking at.And you’ll be halfway tosaving money. You’ll havethe dealer’s “sticker” price, which is where the dealerwants to start bargaining, butyou’ll start bargaining from
the wholesale cost – the placeYOU want to start.
There are several places youcan get the dealer’s whole-sale, or “invoice” cost on anew car or other item. Theone I prefer, hands down, isConsumer Reports. Consum-er Reports (consumerreports.org) has been around for de-cades. It’s an organizationdedicated to helping consum-ers learn more about prod-ucts, how safe they are, howreliable they are, what they’reselling for, and what dealerspay for them. If you’re not in-ternet savvy yet, no problem.By calling Consumer Reportsat 1-800-657-7378 you canreach their New Car Pricing
Service and order a mailed orfaxed copy of the “dealer in-voice” information you want. There is a charge but it’s just afew bucks small – very small- compared to how muchyou’ll save when you bargainup instead of down. Peoplewho bargain up from whole-sale save about $2,500 on theaverage new car. $25.00 forwholesale cost information isworth a $2,500 savings.
Homework’s done. Consum-er Reports has information to
step you through negotiating, like how to respond to deal-er’s pitches. In the eyes of thelaw, what dealers say, like “if I sell it for any less, I won’tbe making any money on it”,is considered hufng, whichmeans words you can’t holdthem to. So, do not trust thedealer. Get the facts yourself. Then bargain up.
Hush up the trade in. Onemore hint: Did you know thatpeople who do not talk abouttheir trade in until after theyhave agreed on a purchaseprice save money? And, if you know the real value of your trade in (from Con-sumer Reports, or autotrader.com) you’ll know if this deal-
er tries to take advantage of your ignorance. So get edu-cated. And bargain up. Onlyknowledge gives you thepower to make fair car deals.

Health Matters
News Flash — Our genes and our DNA do not control life.Since the 1950s, we have been taught that our genes and DNA control everything about our body and our health. We hear
a lot about genetic illness. There are apparently genetic causes for everything from Breast Cancer to Diabetes.
Research laid out by Dr. Bruce Lipton in his book, “The Biology of Belief”, gives us quite a different view of how biologicallife is controlled. It turns out that the only true genetic conditions are what we call congenital – birth defects. The rest of our illnesses are controlled by something other than our genes.
Our body contains over 100,000 proteins and when the human genome project was completed it was determined that we have only about 25,000 genes. A fruit y has 18,000 genes and a simple worm has 24,000 genes. We are just a little morecomplex than a worm. If our genes controlled everything, we certainly would need more genes than a worm or a fruit y.
It is now apparent that there is another controlling mechanism that tells the genes what to do. That way it is p ossible for the25,000 genes to make more than 100,000 different proteins. That other controlling mechanism is the cell membrane. This isthe covering of every cell in our body. This membrane is made of a sandwich of materials made of fats and proteins much likean Oreo cookie. Embedded in this cell membrane are specialized proteins called Receptors and Effectors. The Receptors donothing until they get a signal from the environment outside of the cell. When it gets a signal, the Receptor activates an Effector
which does something inside the cell, such as turn on a cell membrane pump or activates a gene to make a certain protein.
It is these signals then that control everything. There are four kinds of signals: 1. The chemical environment around the cell,2. Trauma, 3. Toxins, and 4. Thoughts.
The chemical environment is controlled by what we eat and drink, the quality and the amount of food , how much sunshineand water we get, our emotions, etc. The toxins are controlled again by what we eat, what we inhale, how much exercise we get, and how w ell we eliminate wastes.
The thoughts part of this is very interesting. Most of our thoughts are automatic tapes that have beendown-loaded into us by parents, teachers, doctors, m inisters, the media, the government, etc. Some of them are accurate and some are misconceptions. If we were constantly told as children that we werestupid, that inaccurate thought signal may inhibit the Receptors and Effectors that stimulate activity inthe fore brain which controls logic and we may consequently reduce our intelligence. Mental housecleaning is very important if we want to remain healthy and be productive our whole lives. Learning tomeditate is one of the best ways to update the old programs and misconceptions.
This new Biology is called Epi-Genetics we will be hearing much more about that in the future. Inthe meantime, Put Your Health in Your Own Hands by monitoring Nutrition, getting regular Exercise, controlling your thoughts and practicing Meditation.
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Make The Right ChoiceBy Sam Erickson
Since the day your kids were born, you havefocused on the impor-tance of good nutri-tion. You serve yourkids healthy meals, and when they need alittle something extra,
you try to give themhealthy snacks. When
you’re at home, this
is easy. You grab somecarrot sticks or low-fatcheese sticks from the fridge. When you’re outand about, this gets a little harder. Conveniencestores are full of snack options, but how do you
which ones are healthy? Here are some tips.
Don’t be fooled by labels
Many snacks labeled healthy aren’t. To know forsure, you need to check out the list of ingredi-ents. Articial colors and avorings, non-naturalpreservatives, partially hydrogenated oils andhigh fructose corn syrup are all indications thathealthier snacks are available. Look for low-fat
snacks with natural colors, avors and sweeten-ers.
Do the math
Multiply the number of calories per servingby the number of servings in the package todetermine just how many calories it contains. If it contains three servings at 200 calories each, that’s a whopping 600 calories your child willconsume if they eat the whole pack. The bestsnacks contain one 150- to 200-calorie serving.Pay attention to the calories from fat as well.Divide it by the total number of calories todetermine the actual percentage.
Don’t pass up the ber
Kids need ber just like adults. Make sure thesnacks you choose have three grams or more of ber per serving, not package.
Do watch the sugar and salt
Kids don’t care how much sugar and salt theirsnacks contain, but you do. Generally, the moresugar or salt a snack has, the better kids like it,
which may explain why most eat more sugar andsalt than they should. You can reduce your kids’
intake by selecting packaged snacks low in sugarand salt.
Don’t dismiss the daily values
Every food label lists the percent daily values, that is, the percentages of nutrients one servingcontains based on the amounts recommended.Don’t dismiss these numbers. Study them care-fully to see just how nutritious the snack is. You
want one high in nutrients.
Use common sense when picking out packaged
snacks. Go for the healthiest ones you can nd,and if you don’t ndany to suit your needs, make your own andbag them. A numberof recipes are availablefor making healthysnacks like trail mixand pitas. It won’t takemuch to satisfy yourkids’ hunger and keepthem on track.
