Emmett Binkert, a graduate of the Kirksville Collegeof Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri, was lookingfor a nice small

town to establish his new practice. He ap-roached Carson City and was struck by the beautyf the St. Marys Church steeple punctuating the

andscape. He knew this was the place for him.

The sight of that steeple is still a landmarkor Carson City, and its a fun story to tell that Dr.inkert picked us because of it, said Gary Sweet, a

35-year employee of Carson City Hospital and therganizations resident historian. From what I have

earned from his daughters, Dr. Binkert founded

his practice here out of faith, and every subsequentexpansion of the hospital was done out of faith. Ibelieve this had a lot to do with our hospitals con-tinued success through many generations now.

Dr. Binkert worked in a small ofce in down-town Carson City for three years, before foundingCarson City Hospital inside his home in 1936. Sincethose humble beginnings, there have been several

expansions and many technological improvementsof the facility, including the latest expansions of thenew, state- of-the-art Emergency Department, themulti-storied front lobby entrance, the new Physical

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.is a non-partisan, non-political organiza-tion. We do not support any political candi-date, nor do we endorse any religious orga-nization. The military represents all aspectsof America as does our organization.

We are mothers who now have, or havehad, children honorably serving in the mili-tary. We are a non-prot (501[c]3) Veteransservice organization supporting our militarychildren while promoting patriotism.

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.is authorized by Title 36, Chapter 305 of theUnited States Code (36 USC 305); Section943, as of January 26, 1998.

I am a Blue Star Mother. The service banner that hangs on the

front window of my home is a two star, bluestar banner. This shows those who drive by,that I have had two children who have orare honorably serving in our United StatesMilitary. The service ag was authorizedas the ofcial banner by the Department ofDefense for display by families who have

members serving during war or hostilitiesin which the United States is engaged in.The Service ag, also called the Blue StarFlag, was designed and patented by WWIArmy Captain Robert L. Queisser of the 5thOhio Infantry who had two sons serving onthe front line.

I joined the Blue Star Mothers throughthe national webpage. In looking for a lo-cal chapter I found that the BSM GreenvilleChapter #2 is not able to hold meetings. The by-laws state that a living member mustswear in the new members. There is oneliving member who is in declining health.Unfortunately she is unable to performthe task necessary to reopen the chapter.I spoke with someone from near the Flintarea and she was working in coordinatinga new chapter for the area mothers who are

interested in joining. The dues are $20.00annually.

We now have a group, which currentlycovers Ionia, Kent & Montcalm Counties. We also have others in attendance fromtowns beyond these counties. We meetnear Orleans at the home of a Patriot GuardRider who has opened his pole barn for ouruse. We are currently submitting to the na-tional BSM organization for inclusion to thenational organization and putting in the pa-

    perwork for the 501(c)3 status.

Who can join BSM?Mothers and other family members can

join BSM. The website explains member-ship as: Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.is a nonpartisan, nonsectarian, nondiscrim-inatory and non-prot organization.

Blue Star MothersA Mother or Stepmother (since the

child was of the age of 13) who has a son ordaughter who is serving, or has been honor-ably discharged from the Armed Forces ofthe United States. Services included are theUnited States Army, Navy, Marine Corps,Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard,Reserve Units, and the Merchant Marines.

    Blue Star Dads (associate mem-ber)

Blue Star Dads is in the process or reor-ganization. Dads we need you!! Until Dadsare reorganized they should apply as an as-sociate member to BSM. We do have BlueStar Dad Pins.

A Father or Step Father (since the childwas of the age of 13) who has a son ordaughter who is serving, or has been honor-ably discharged from the Armed Forces ofthe United States. Services included are theUnited States Army, Navy, Marine Corps,Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard,Reserve Units, and the Merchant Marines.

Blue Star AssociatesAre a spouse, sister, brother, grandpar-

ent, aunt, uncle, cousin, or friend of some-

one who is serving, or has been honorablydischarged from the Armed Forces of theUnited States. Services included are theUnited States Army, Navy, Marine Corps,Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard,Reserve Units, and the Merchant Marines.

The Blue Star Mothers was founded asa Veteran Service Organization and waspart of a movement to provide care pack-ages to military members serving overseasand also provided assistance to families

who encountered hardships as a result oftheir son or husband serving in the war.

We are putting together a list of projectsto do as a group that will benet our troopsoverseas as well as troops and veterans lo-cally. Working with Bardens Funeral Homeof Stanton and many of the area elementaryschools, BSM recently sent out over 600home made valentines to troops stationedin Afghanistan. Our group is also collect-ing old cell phones to have them either re-furbished to send to troops or what cantbe xed can be sold for scrap & the moneythen can be used to buy calling cards tosend overseas. Also any used DVDs in goodshape are being gathered and included inboxes to send out to our troops. These are a

welcomed diversion for them.We promote patriotism. We also sup-

port each other. Our chapter also has two Gold Star

Mothers. These are mothers of Heroes whopaid the ultimate sacrice in their service toour country. These wonderful ladies wantto continue to support our troops and nowhave adopted members added to their fami-lies that they are in contact with.

Since we are a new group and are smallin numbers we openly welcome others tojoin with us. If you have questions regard-ing joining our local chapter you can call meat (989) 814-0650.
