MONDAY,MAY3,2010•RIVERVALLEYNEWSSHOPPER  7LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Reader wants toclarify recall languageTO THE EDITOR:

I’m writing in an effort to inform  your readers why I felt it necessary toappeal recall language to the court sys-tem. I was under the impression that arecall effort needed to be based on my course of conduct in office. In fact thestate statute reads that each reason

for recall must make it clear what my course of conduct was that is the basisfor the recall. My problem is that thelanguage that was submitted does notpoint to anything that I have actually

done, or when, or where I’m supposedto have done it. I’d like to ask each of  you to just read the language and withthat information alone ask yourself; What did Dan Kanouse do to suppresspublic comment?

How did Dan Kanouse try to expend$30,000 without previously budgetingfor it? What are Dan Kanouse’s respon-sibilities under the FOIA? If those ques-tions can’t be answered in the languagethen according to the statute the lan-

guage is not clear.I would like everyone to know thatthe recall language submitted by Mr.Hall has absolutely nothing to do withmy course of conduct in office. I do

not control public comment, I do notreceive FOIA requests nor do I haveany responsibility to do so, and I never voted to spend or made any motion tospend any money without keeping our budget in mind.

I have done what I can to protect thetaxpayers of Winfield township fromhaving to pay for an unnecessary elec-tion but I was unsuccessful. The vot-ers of the township will now decide forthemselves whether or not to sign on to

a recall movement. They should be madeaware of the fact that the person whofiled the recall language (Robert Hall)is a disgruntled ex township employee who pled guilty to and was convicted of

embezzlement while he was employed  by Winfield Township. He is only tar-geting the four township officials who voted to suspend him in the first place.I believe it is necessary to point thisout because people are being asked tochoose between his point of view andthe point of view of the board members.Mr. Hall served alongside all four tar-geted board members through the lastelection cycle without complaint untilhe was suspending pending an investi-

gation of his actions. I have said in thepast that Mr. Hall will not be able to gethonest with the voters until he gets hon-est with himself and I still believe that.

What People Are Saying

“The River Valley News Shopper is proving to be the best

value for our advertising dollar. The ad they put together for

us was great. We had a lot of flea marketers tell us they saw

the ad in the paper, and commented on how nice looking it

was. The coverage area for the paper is phenomenal.”

BOOK REVIEW CORNERTHE DOUBLE JACK MURDERS by Patrick McManus

This book was excellent. It was the first book I ever read by this author. I

went back to the library and checked out two more of his books.

Sandra

MOTHER by Kathleen Norris

The story is set in a little town four hours from New York City. There is a

young woman who feels motherhood is not important, it is all work and

no fun. She gets a job for an upper class woman from New York City. She

gets to travel and she meets someone special. In the end she realizes how

important motherhood is and has more of a desire to be one also.

Faith

THE CHRISTMAS SECRET by Donna Van Liere

In the spirit of “Christmas Hope”, this story is about a lot of secrets not

the least of which is: “Why has Christine never known her father and why

won’t her mother talk about him?” Throughout the book we run across a

few familiar characters and get caught up on what they are doing as well.

This book is a very pleasant book to read.

Many of us have had to deal with a flat tire

at some point or another. Getting out the

spare, jacking up the vehicle and changing

the flat tire are no fun, especially when you

are dressed up and on your way to work or

a special event. Imagine never having to do

that again. Sound good to you? Then you’ll

be happy to know that run-flat tires are

making their way onto vehicles.

Although run-flat tires were introduced in

1994, they have only recently become avail-

able on more vehicles. Currently, there are

two basic types: self-supporting tires (SST)

and patented auxiliary support tires (PAX).

Both are designed to support the weight of

a vehicle for 100 miles or more and allowdrivers to continue moving down the road

until they can find a shop to repair the flat.

SSTs rely upon heavily reinforced sidewalls

to support the vehicle’s weight, while PAXs

rely upon semi-rigid support rings.

Run-flat tires offer many benefits, most im-

portantly, convenience. Drivers don’t have

to worry about pulling over and changing

a flat tire. They can leave that to the repair

shop. They don’t have to carry all of the

tools necessary for changing a flat tire, giv-

ing them more space for other things. Some

auto manufacturers, in fact, have taken ad-

vantage of this extra space to incorporate

other features into their models. Vehicles

with run-flat tires have a tire pressure mon-

itoring system, which lets drivers know

when one of their tires has lost pressure and

reduces the threat of a blowout. In instances

where a blowout does occur, run-flat tires

can handle the sudden deflation better than

standard tires, allowing drivers to maintain

stability.

Because the technology is relatively new,

run-flat tires do pose some problems. Run-

flat tires are heavier, adding to the vehicle’s

weight and using more gas. According to

some consumers, run-flat tires do not last

nearly as long as standard tires. Replace-

ments typically cost more than standardtires and are not readily available at all

shops. In some cases, run-flat tires can be

repaired, but finding a shop with the equip-

ment and knowledge to do so can be dif-

ficult.

As run-flat tires become more common-

place, the problems with them will no doubt

be worked out. In the meantime, consumers

may want to take the purchase of a vehicle

with run-flat tires into serious consider-

ation. They should learn all that they can

about the tires, including how much they

cost and how easily they can be repaired

and replaced.

Automotive Guide  All Tuned Up

By Tresa Erickson

Most of us know that regular mainte-nance is key to a well-running vehicle.

That’s why we get our oil changed,

have our tires rotated and so forth.

Another important part of the regular

maintenance schedule is the tune-up.

Because the internal workings of ve-

hicles have changed so much over the

years, the definition of a tune-up may

vary from the simple replacement of

spark plugs to the complete overhaul

of several areas within the vehicle.

Most experts agree that the best tune-

ups involve an inspection of severalareas, including the battery, engine

mechanical, powertrain control, fuel,

ignition and emissions. Not every

shop defines a tune-up in this way,

however. Generally, the more in-

volved the tune-up, the more it costs.

When scheduling a tune-up, it is im-

portant that you find out what it will

entail and how much it will cost. Be

wary of really low estimates; chances

are the shop is pushing for your busi-

ness and the final bill for the tune-up

will be much higher.

The best shops understand that not alldrivers know what a tune-up is and

request one on the assumption that it

will fix whatever is wrong with their

vehicle. They will ask why you think

your vehicle needs a tune-up and go

from there. You may discover that

what you really need are new battery

cables rather than new spark plugs.

Once you have several estimates, sit

down and compare them. Select the

shop whose estimate includes a fairly

thorough inspection at a fair price.

You want to make sure that when youdrive away from the shop your vehicle

is running smoothly and efficiently.

The term “tune-up” means different

things to different people. Keep that

in mind as you shop around for es-

timates. Know what you are getting

before you take your vehicle in, and

if you are getting a tune-up for any

reason other than maintenance issues,

relay that information to the shop. If

you don’t, you could end up paying

for a tune-up plus a repair.

Meditation and RelaxationOne of the tools we can learn to use to help us deal with the memories of past trauma is Meditation.

In the early 1980’s I was working in the plant medical department at Diesel Equipment, one of the GeneralMotors factories in Grand Rapids. The job was very stressful and I decided to attend a class to try to learnhow to relax. I had developed an ulcer and had high blood pressure. The weekend fun of sailing, partying with friends, and excessive drinking was making things worse instead of better.

I realized that I did not know how to relax; I did not know how to slow down my mind and let my body recharge and rejuvenate. So I attended a four hour relaxation class. It turned out to be one of those lifechanging experiences.

For the first time in years, I realized that the pressure I had in my chest was not normal. With the daily

practice of the mental training exercises I had learned, the blood pressure returned to normal and the ulcer healed. The effects of this was so profound, I decided to explore further. I took a training program call “TheSilva Method”. This was a four day course targeted at teaching people to learn to use their own minds for thebenefit of their own health.

We had learned to meditate. Meditation is a way to relax the body and recharge all the chemicals that areconstantly being used up. I had always viewed meditation as something strange andodd. I had seen pictures of the Guru with folded arms and legs, chanting in a bluehaze of incense. In reality it is very different.

Meditation has three parts. The Induction helps us change quickly from an active, awake state of mind to a more passive, restful state of mind. The Programming Phaseinvolves mental pictures and statements, much like daydreaming. When we mentally see ourselves at an ideal place of relaxation, our brain thinks we are actually thereand it begins to manufacture the chemicals associated with relaxation. Positiveaffirmations (statements) help up-date our operating programs. The Ending is agradual return to our normal activity.

Daily practice of a relaxing meditation will improve our lives physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Croton Twp.

1837-1839

Newaygo County Survey:

The First

JOHN SNOW’S “TOWN”Once there was a town called “Snowtown”. It

wasn’t a very big place, maybe only 5 to 6 square miles, but

it was a boom town for “Green” Gold! What was “Green”

Gold? It was the great White Pines growing in the Big Prai-

rie and Croton Township of Newaygo County. Just like the

old gold-mining ghost towns that boomed and then died

when the gold was all mined, so goes the fate of towns like

Snowtown.

Once the White Pines were all cut, as well as any

other great trees (Maple, Oak, etc.) were cut down, then the

loggers moved on following the “Green” Gold, leaving be-

hind the prairies of sandy ground for the farmers to use. So

goes the life of the Big Prairie, known as Stearns’s Prairie,

biggest this side of the Mississippi River.
