Dear Students and Parents, It is my distinct honor to be serving as your Middle School Principal. I hope everyone enjoyed their summer vacation. As we begin the 2012-13 school year, I wanted to take a moment and share with you some of the many changes occurring around our campus this year. The first is a change in the traffic pattern for both River Springs and Manatee Cove. The changes are in response to last year’s unprecedented number of students being injured by vehicles. Parents dropping off and picking up students from Manatee Cove and River Springs should enter from Scholars Path and exit on West Ohio Avenue. Both streets will be one way and no parking will be permitted on either street. The parent loop for River Springs has switched with the bus loop and is clearly marked to ensure proper traffic flow. Law enforcement officers will be at the schools to assist drivers with the new traffic pattern. It is extremely important that everyone follow the new rules and posted signs to ensure the safety of our students. The second change is the implementation of the Swamp Time. Our school times will stay the same, but we have allocated 25 minutes each day, excluding Wednesdays, for Swamp Time. Swamp Time will allow us time to meet the new grading guidelines. Students will have opportunities for remediation, reassessment, and enrichment 4 out of 5 days per week. In line with this, we will be providing our staff professional development on the Common Core State Standards and Standards Referenced Grading. Please take note of the changes in Pinnacle GradeBook. We encourage you to check your child’s progress on Pinnacle weekly. Because we are committed to student achievement, we will be spending two full days every week in classrooms in order to help improve the teaching and learning that happens on a daily basis. Therefore, we may not always be available to speak with you when you drop in or telephone us. However, we really do value communicating with you. So, when you want to speak with one of the administrators, please contact our secretaries who will schedule a time for us to talk. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school and your patience and understanding as we implement these practices. Sincerely, Stacy Gotlib-Principal [email protected]

For the 2012-13 school year, the School Board of Volusia County will continue en-forcing the district-wide dress code which applies to every student in a Volusia County public school. The policy was amended for next school year with three basic changes 1) allowing for sunglasses; 2) allowing for hats in cold or inclement weather; 3) clarifying that distracting or inappropriate garments are prohibited in both upper and lower garments, this includes rips and tears.

The dress code establishes minimal guidelines for the appearance and dress of students. Basic requirements follow; however, the complete guidelines can be found in Policy 217, which is posted on the district's website at http://MyVolusiaSchools.org:

HEAD - No caps, visors, hoods, ban-

danas, or other head gear, except with ad-ministrative permission.

UPPER GARMENTS- All garments must

cover shoulder to shoulder. All garments must be long enough to clearly overlap the beltline or stay tucked. NO halter tops, tanks tops, spaghetti straps or muscle shirts.

LOWER GARMENTS - Undergarments

and the buttocks MUST remain entirely covered even while seated. Dresses, skirts and shorts must be at least mid-thigh or below in length. No rips/tears or skintight items.

FOOTWEAR - Shoes must be safe and

appropriate. No slippers or shoes with wheels are permitted on campus. Cleats may be worn for appropriate extracurricular sports in proper areas.

ACCESSORIES - Clothing, jewelry and

accessories must not convey inappropriate messages. Garments that are distracting or inappropriate are prohibited, including those with see-through materials, skintight items or
