Liturgy of the word As we enter Lent, it is a great time to get a real understanding of the Liturgy of the Word. We celebrate this at every Mass. Some- times we are distracted and don't fully absorb the meaning of the Word. During Lent, let us get back to the Word and focus on the meaning, with appropriate reflections. At the beginning of the Mass, we have a penitential rite in which we express our sorrow for our sins in preparation for the celebration of the Eucharist. After that we go into the Liturgy of the Word. It consists of read- ings from Scripture. On Sundays and solemnities there are three readings. The first is from the Old Testament. The second from the New Testament and the last from one of the 4 gospels. Through the liturgy of the Word, the Church feeds the people of God from the table of his Word. The scriptures are the Word of God, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In the Scriptures God speaks to us, leading us along the path of salvation. The Responsorial psalm is sung between the readings, which helps us to meditate on the word of God. The high point in the Liturgy of the Word is the reading of the Gospel. Because the Gospel tells of the life, ministry, preaching, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, it occupies a special place of honor and reverence. The gathered assembly stands to hear the Gospel and it is always introduced by an acclamation of praise. It is usually read by the Deacon, if he is present, otherwise the Priest reads it. After the scripture reading, the celebrant preaches the homily in which he focuses on the scripture texts, drawing from them lessons which may help us to live better lives and be more faithful to Christs call to grow in holiness. The homily is followed by the profession of faith. The Liturgy of the Word is concluded with the prayer of the faithful, which is intercessory prayers of the community addressed to God on behalf of the Church, the world, themselves, praying specially for those who have passed from their midst. With this review and understanding, let us rejoice in the Word and fill our hearts with the Holy Spirit. Fr. Fr. Mathew Kavipurayidam, TOR Is this your year?
