Study Hall February 2016 - Rikuo Miura

Preparing for another day of rigorous academics, students complete assign-ments in rooms arranged and decorated uniquely by each student.

Halfway through study hall, the prefect on duty calls a five-minute break, and the residents are free to walk about.

A 5-minute recess offers to dorm residents a much needed break from studying, to

refresh and reinvigorate themselves for another hour of studying.

The buzzer signaling the end of study hall rings, and residents make their way down to the common room for a dorm meeting. Once the dorm head starts brief-ing students on the permissions procedure for March break, they listen attentively.

Immediately following the meeting, workjobs com-mence, pictured on the bottom left.

The hallways are enveloped in silence as the residents return to their room, to get ready for lights out.

In this project, I sought to document the experiences of a boarding student, on a weekday night. Although weekday nights at first seemed mundane to me, having lived in this routine - check-in, study hall, break, dorm meeting, workjobs - for three years, I was surprised to discover the various expressions I was able to capture on that night. To see this seemingly routine part of life at LC in the form of photographs, witnessing my fellow residents’ diligence, or the joy and playfulness bursting out during break, allowed me to recognize and appreciate the experience of living in a boarding school. In laying out the photographs, therefore, I aimed to express the density and diversity of activity I witnessed that night, and capture the atmo-sphere of life in a dormitory.
