EFdeN means more than 50 students with the same goal: finding the best solutions in order to build a solar energy efficient house. As a multidisciplinary team, we take this competition as a challenge to share our knowledge for obtaining innovation. By building this energy efficient house with our own hands we also intend to set an example which will drive to a change in behavior towards a sustainable lifestyle.

Since the project started, we took steps to fulfill our dream and tore apart the barriers we came up against. And we are not stopping; we are relentless and resilient in learning from each other how to be good professionals and better people!

For us, nature is the determining element, as every component designed for the house is created according to the notion of green. This is also one of our main goals, namely to bring nature into urban peoples’ lives. This is why, for us, nature is the input, which brings us to the creation of the output, namely the house, these two concepts being interconnected. The means for obtaining this equation is f(n), representing all the theoretical knowledge we have learnt until now being put into practice. All for finding the best solutions for our house!

What EFdeN is about

5 EFdeN Press Release

We adapt an energy efficient solar house to the city’s key points, taking a sustainable step towards nature!

Life in the urban context has changed a lot due to technology and the expansion of the metropolises. The city is getting bigger and bigger and the man is struggling to keep pace with it. If you are looking at Bucharest, the city has not developed like other metropolises, as there are many unused spaces within the city due to the industrialization phase. These brownfield areas are, in our view, of great interest, because of their core position within the city. Urban densification and mobility are problems which the project EFdeN wants to offer solutions to by designing and building a solar energy efficient house which can be adapted to the brownfield areas; a modular house, created to offer the user’s desired comfort.

Nowadays, the importance of nature has diminished due to the expansion of the city and, later, technology. The urban man may have forgotten how important and useful nature is. EFdeN wants to give nature its utter position, this is why our house integrates a green space. Being the central architectural element which creates a vegetal axe, it can be adapted to the urban farming concept, but being at the same time leisure space for the whole family and even for the community. Not in the least important, the integration of this corner of nature becomes an innovation as it has never been made in the field of energy efficient housing.

So we are literally putting nature into the center of the house, allocating it the most important role of the concept.

Placing nature in the center of an energy efficient solar house!

As a team comprised of sharp minds from different fields of study and research, we join together the latest principles of sustainable development towards a concept to unite them all in the ultimate solution. By correlating functional systems of building, we work to harmonize the modern housing system with the resources of the environment.

For a viable and sustainable change, continuity is key. We make sure that our initiative is part of a longer chain of change. Our plans are developed with the inspiration of natural models, adapted to modern construction principles, and designed to be further improved. Rasing the social awerness of the local comunity with regard to sustainable development is how we understand to make sure that our contribution is a meaningful one.

Efficient use of resources is the path to sustainable development. In our view, sobriety as a lifestyle is the expression of such development. Our intended course of action is to bring efficiency to fruition through modern and efficient housing. As a complementary effort, we aim all this action at a greater effort of shaping rather than changing mentalities towards welcoming a more considerate lifestyle.

Powered by unity, continuity and frugality Unity for harmony

Continuity for certainty

Frugality for sustainability

Project DescriptionEFdeN, the solar house for an upgraded urban lifestyleEFdeN proposes a concept that addresses the 6 main points of Solar Decathlon Europe competition is trying to solve: density, mobility, sobriety, innovation, accessibility, project vs. prototype. While still treating all six challenges like priorities, EFdeN makes it a point to stick to the specifics of the Romanian context, where most of the urban challenges spring from improperly managed mobility and densification issues. Bucharest is representative of Romanian cities which have naturally but uncontrollably grown into city sprawls, hindering the development of a comfortable lifestyle. As follows, our main goal is to put forward one way of solving these issues by means of designing and building an energy efficient solar house, with a catch.

EFdeN proposes a modular, energy efficient solar house that can be adapted to the capital’s brownfield sites - spaces that have previously shown a predominantly industrial use, but are now abandoned. The catch is that on these sites, starting from the EFdeN prototype, semi-collective housing can be developed, compounds which can have both the advantages of individual and collective housing. This way, the project aims to re-integrate the concept of community in the Romanian’s living style.

8EFdeN Press Release

The lack of a multi-polar development generates an inconvenient use of Bucharest’s urban areas, leading to the congestion of the city center and the functional segregation of certain areas. By creating communities and service areas connected to the housing areas, we can ensure higher density as well as a lower degree of overcrowding in the central zone.

If managed correctly, the EFdeN prototype can help the urban rehabilitation of many other former industrial cities from Romania. Considering the current scenario, comprised mostly of mobility and density issues, with eventual pollution as a consequence, we might just have the key stone. EFdeN will not only align Bucharest with the other major European capitals in terms of quality of living and interest in sustainability, but it will also answer several urban challenges in Romania, while still being applicable to other similar sites around the world. We’re not the only country with abandoned industrial sites.

Given the fact that the urban scenario restricts the access to green areas for the typical urban inhabitant, we are responding to this need by integrating a green-space in the house’s architecture. When deemed part of the development plan, this green space becomes an important element for community activation that encourages communication between neighbors by having common spaces.

EFdeN brings nature into an urban context, thus permitting the inhabitant to have a permanent connection to it. To that end, the greenspace integrated in the house’s architecture provides the perfect opportunity for the individual to use this space for both utility and pleasure purposes. This green space gives the user the ability to include urban farming in his style of living and enhance his comfort level by providing a perfect leisure space. In addition, it functions as a thermic buffer during winter time and has a functional role in the HVAC system.

Photovoltaic and Electrical

BMS (Building Management System)

The house will function with electrical energy produced by the photovoltaic panels, installed on the rooftop. It will also be connected to the national power grid, making use of it only under specific circumstances (for example, cloudy days). When the house produces more energy than needed, it can be injected into the city’s grid. The illuminating of the house is done using both natural light (where possible) and a high efficiency LED system.

We plan to build an intelligent house, permanently linked to its owner, thus optimizing comfort conditions and minimizing energy consumption. The BMS system will carry out specifically this function; with a cause-effect base principle and with the help of a central processing unit, the system continuously receives information from the sensors installed in the house and adjusts the prototype’s HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems accordingly. The inhabitant has permanent control over the BMS, being able to access it via Internet and can, at any given time, create a specific ambiance, according to his needs and desires.

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) One important part of the HVAC strategy is the integrated green-space, that acts as a thermic buffer during winter time. The green-space benefits from a thermal mass wall that during the day accumulates energy, ceasing it to the inside environment during the night. The technical space has the same thermic buffer function during winter, because of its position to the North, protecting the house from air currents and helping with the heating process through heat emissions from the equipment installed. Phase-changing materials play another part in the intake and distribution of the caloric energy. During winter time, they accumulate thermal energy produced by the solar radiation that enters the house, later distributing it in the interior environment. During summer, these materials help absorb the excess heat by being shaded during the day.

The heating/cooling system of the house is composed of an air-water heat pump and a solar panel system. The solar panels are connected through a bivalent boiler. The same system will help prepare the needed domestic hot water . Terminal units of the heating/cooling system are represented by the capillary tubes positioned on the lateral walls. Foul air will be extracted from the kitchen and the bathroom, combined with the fresh air and introduced in the living room and bedroom. At the same time, the heat recovery will also be carried out. The two streams will intersect within a heat recovery unit so that little energy is wasted.
