Happy New (Rotary) Year!“I work for you.”

I have made this pledge to your Club President every time I have spoken with her or him since Sep-tember of last year, when we first began preparing for this Rotary year.

What does “I work for you” mean?

Simply put, it means that we don’t need a Ro-tary District without great Rotary Clubs. It means that every single member of the District Leadership team is committed to providing the resources and experience that can help you committee chairs and club leadership team make the most of the coming Rotary year. It also means that I truly believe that the best leaders are also the best servants.

This year, RI President John Germ has established four goals for Rotary International and its clubs:

• END POLIO NOW – AND FOREVER!

• IMPROVE ATTRACTION, ENGAGEMENT, AND RETENTION PROCESSES

• DEVELOP PARTNERSHIPS OUTSIDE ROTARY LOCALLY & WORLDWIDE

• CELEBRATE THE CENTENNIAL OF OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION

By putting a “once and for all time” end to polio, we say to children throughout the world, “I work for you.” By developing individual, tailored club ap-

proaches to attracting, engaging, training, re-taining, we help good people remain active in their clubs, their communities, and the world. By working with partnerships in our communities and all over the globe, we leverage the good name of Rotary and expand our reach to help make people’s lives better. Celebrating OUR Rotary Foundation’s Centennial next June in Atlanta means making ev-ery effort to contribute meaningfully financially, physically, and spiritually in support of its mission, ”To do good in the world.”

One final thought: We are all members of Rotary clubs. A club is a group of people who like each other and enjoy spending time together as a group. That’s why, in addition to our International theme for this year – ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY – I have adopted my club’s slogan for the district this Rotary Year:

“Doing Good, Having Fun!”More on that during my visit to your club. Let’s

have a great year together as Rotarians. Remem-ber: I work for you!

The Rotary Club of Central Pinellas, a 100% PHF club, was chartered in 1983 as the Rotary Club of Clearwater Feather-sound. On July 1st, 2007 the Rotary Club of Pinellas Bard-moor Bayou was merged into the club and the Pinellas Feath-er Sound Rotary Club was formed. In May of 2012 the name was officially changed to The Rotary Club of Central Pinel-las. The club now meets Tuesday evenings from 5:45pm until 6:30pm at Liberty Lanes in Largo. Signature events include the 5th Annual Bowling for Literacy fundraiser, to be held on August 20th and an Annual Poker Run that will be held near the end of January. The club tends to support organizations that provide assistance to children and provides complete meals for families multiple times throughout the year.

During Rotary Year 2016-17 President James Holloman is focusing on growth, organization and their District Focus Grant. The club is leading a combined project of 8 of the 11 clubs in Areas 1 & 2 to construct hydroponic farms to support local charities in partnership with St. Petersburg College.

Rotary Club of Central Pinellas

Rotary Club of Tarpon Springs

The Rotary Club of Clearwater meets Wednesdays at 12:15 at the Bellair Country Club. We tout the best lunch on the West Central Gulf Coast, so please join us when you can!

Our club was chartered January 2, 1925 and is 91 years old; we look forward to hitting that 100-year mark! We are 100 members strong and purposeful supporters of The Rotary Foundation; we are both a 100% PHF club and an EREY sus-taining club.

We’re well-known for our Kingfish tournament, 24 years strong. This year’s event hosted 65 boats and raised over $32,000--over the lifetime of the tournament we have raised and donated almost $1M to local charities! Also for many years, we’ve supported our local High School students in continuing education. Last year we supported three separate “turnaround” students with scholarships.

We were excited to start a new fundraising event this year, the Beer-B-Que. In addition to local craft beer and BBQ, it was a jazz event; if you missed it, spring will be back around soon enough! Details of all of our events are on our website: http://www.clearwaterrotary.org/

Rotary Club of Clearwater

The Rotary Club of Tarpon Springs was established in March, 1927 with 23 mem-bers; we have now grown to 104 members. Our meetings are held Thurs-

day 12:15 PM at the Tarpon Springs Yacht Club.

Our Signature event is a Triathlon, now in its 27th year. Held in September at Fred Howard Park, it includes swim-ming, biking, and running. Last year, we had 600 participants and 200+ volunteers and businesses donating food. Net pro-ceeds benefit scholarship for young people and single par-ents.

http://tarponspringstriathlon.com/

Our focus is the youth in our community, and we have a separate Foundation that helps provide many scholarships ev-ery year. We support the local Boys & Girls club, the Culinary school at Tarpon High, and have had a special project regard-ing preserving our past at the Tarpon Springs Middle School (pictured with map bookshelf we built this last Rotary year).

We also had an amazing Global Grant project in Bali last year. See details on our website, under “Get Involved”!

http://www.tarponspringsrotary.org/

Meets Fridays at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club 12:15 – 1:15pm - Visitors are always welcome!

THE Rotary Club of St. Petersburg was chartered in 1920. Our club is steeped in the history of the early years of St. Pe-tersburg. Notables in that inaugural group of members were its first president, William Straub, owner and editor of the St. Petersburg Times, who responsible with dedicating so much of St. Petersburg waterfront to parks; Al Lang, Mayor of St. Pe-tersburg, was responsible for bringing baseball spring training to the young town of St. Petersburg; and George ‘Pop’ Gandy who thought it would be a good idea to have a bridge across the bay linking Tampa and St. Petersburg.

Signature events are the St. Petersburg Illuminated Boat Pa-rade, Wine for the Arts, and the annual pig roast in collabora-tion with the Rotary St. Petersburg Sunrise Club that supports the Shelter Box.

New this year is a collaboration with Area I Rotary Clubs and Volunteers of America for a concert featuring the Sauce Boss to be held Saturday, February 18th at Williams Park in St. Petersburg. We have also partnered with Area 2 clubs in the creation of the hydroponic garden project, which will be a sustainable food source for the homeless and an educational resource for technical skills students in Pinellas County.

Keep an eye out for Monday communications from the Governor! www.rotary6950.org

Monday with Mikey: June 27, 2016

! Why the red Converse ALL STAR ™ shoes? Well….

RI president Germ has said that we are “ROTARY’S ALL STAR TEAM” this year. The word “team” can mean a whole lot of things – but in this case it means:

Together Everyone Achieves More!

My first challenge to you is this: • Buy a pair of ALL STARS. There are lots of options and prices online or in strores Buy them in

whatever style or color you prefer. • Wear them in places where they look a little out of place. I am not encouraging anyone to violate

workplace dress codes. However, wearing them to events and in places where they’re not normally expected is part of the challenge.

• When someone asks you, “Hey, what’s up with the shoes?”, tell them you’re wearing them because you’re a Rotarian, and then say to them, sincerely, “Let me tell you about MY Rotary Club.”

• See what happens next. I guarantee you that one (hopefully more) of the people you tell about your rotary Club will want to know more, so invite them to join you for breakfast, lunch, cocktails – in whatever locale and format your club meets.

Together, we can – in fact – achieve more! Our first step (shoe pun obviously intended) is to do something that makes us noticed and causes people to ask us about this wonderful movement called Rotary.

My second challenge to you is this:

• Email me a picture of you (that includes your CONVERSE ALL STARS™ on your feet – hopefully with the rest of you in the picture!! My email address is [email protected],

• I’ll get it posted to the district Facebook page, website, and newsletter. We may also use it for some fun at District Conference and RI Convention next June!

Until next Monday, keep “Doing Good, Having Fun!”

Your Friend in Rotary Service,

Mikey Mike Chapman District 6950 Governor 2016-17

Do you know someone that has been involved in a Group Study Exchange (GSE), Rotary Youth Exchange (RYS), Semi-nars For Tomorrow Leaders (S4TL), or a Ambassadorial Schol-ar? Those are some of the people defined as alumni of Rotary. And, we are looking for them!!!

Many thanks to Susanne Nielsen, the past alumni chair for District 6950. Susanne has done a SUPER job in organiz-ing the alumni committee. The alumni committee has been tasked with identifying alumni throughout the district to reen-gage them with Rotary. We could use your help.

Alumni can be very beneficial to your club in a number of ways. They certainly would make a great program telling your club about their Rotary adventure. Listening to a young man or woman describe their RYE opportunity will capture anyone’s attention; their enthusiasm about their experience is infectious! Ask anyone who attended the District Convention just a few months ago, and they will agree that Ally Vincent is a wonderful ambassador for Rotary!

I don’t know of any club that can’t use another pair of hands at a service project or a fundraiser. There could be a wealth of Rotary alumni close to you that would love to volunteer for a few hours to a worthy cause.

There are only a handful of clubs that actually have a wait-ing list of people wanting to join their club….most clubs do not have that luxury. But, what if there were alumni that were at a point in their life where joining a Rotary club was a viable option - alumni that have graduated from college and started their profession? We are finally getting away from the thought that networking in Rotary is off limits. After all, wasn’t that what Paul Harris had in mind?

During this year, we will be contacting alumni we identify to engage them in club and district events. Please make sure you post your club events to the DaCDb calendar, as that is the simplest way for the committee to get the information to share with alumni. In addition, members of the committee will be in touch with club representatives to share information about events and/or to get contact information about alumni.

So, in summary, we are reaching out to alumni to reengage them with Rotary and help clubs increase their membership! Please contact an committee member if you know of alumni in your area!

Thank you!

In his address, incoming President Jim Campbell talked about plans for the new year, including the grant to feed the poor and homeless. At the meeting on June 16, Jim and AG Gary Coil explained the grant and how all the Westside 6 clubs will be involved. Much research has gone into the plan to raise fruit and vegetables in barrels in a self sustaining, highly productive way. Certain kinds of beans and potatoes, for example, are very productive in this environment and cre-ate crops that can be dried and saved or safely stored. Plant-ing will start later this year, so there is much to do to get ready, including setting up irrigation.
