La presente edicin de la revista Labiofam muestra el trabajo sos-tenido del Grupo Empresarial, centro que hoy logra cubrir el 98 % de los medicamentos que necesita el sector veterinario y que tiene entre sus proyecciones abarcar la totalidad de la demanda y abrirse con mayor fuerza hacia el mercado internacional.

a close ally of Cuban cattle breeders, the LaBIofam Entrepreneurial Group has been supplying, for almost five decades, the drugs, diagnostic kits and vaccines used by veterinarians from all over the country.

Doctoral and master graduates, working together with other specialists from this well-known scientific institution, have developed formulations replacing formerly imported products, also pursuing new re-search projects that have raised significantly the standard of care of Cuban veterinary medicine.

The present issue of the Labiofam journal show-cases the results of the Groups efforts, which meet 98 % of the veterinarian drug needs of our livestock. LaBIofams future plans include completely satis-fying the national demand and establishing a stron-ger presence on the international market.

En sus palabras resaltan las vivencias de ms de 50 aos de vinculacin al desarrollo ganadero de Cuba, con sus logros y momentos difciles, pero sobre todo marcadas por el optimismo de quien ha logrado sortear, junto a su institucin, pocas de limitaciones y dificul-tades financieras.

Comenc mis estudios universitarios en la Empresa Pecuaria Nia Bonita. All empec a familiarizarme con temas ganaderos, una especialidad que me caus espe-cial atraccin, permitindome vivir momentos de satis-faccin cuando alcanzaba grandes resultados producti-vos, y pequeos disgustos cuando de enfrentar las cosas mal hechas se trataba.

Me desvincul de la produccin despus de haber estado trabajando en ella muchos aos. Durante ese tiempo hubo controversias por los errores que dificulta-ban la existencia de una ganadera adecuada a un pas tropical, concebida por Fidel, que necesitaba obtener combina-ciones de razas que produjeran animales resistentes a las condiciones climticas, que elevaran los rendimien-tos de leche y carne. Por esa poca me dieron la tarea de dirigir el Grupo Empresarial, donde me he mantenido por espacio de 21 aos, alejndome de la actividad ga-nadera propiamente dicha, aun cuando estamos en una industria de produccin de medicamentos, vacunas y hormonas para las diferentes ganaderas.

failures. They reveal the unyielding optimism of a man that has successfully surmounted, to-gether with the institution under his direction, a considerable number of obstacles and financial difficulties.

I started my university studies at the nia Bonita Cattle Raising Enterprise. There I had my first taste of cattle breeding, a specialty that sparked my interest and provided many pleasurable moments whenever production went well, but also its fair share of irritations whenever some-thing was not done right.

It was only after many years that I left the cattle industry. During that time there were heated arguments about errors which, in my consideration, led our industry astray from fidels conception of a cattle farming system adapted to tropical conditions, based on combinations of breeds that would yield animals resistant to our environmental conditions while exhibiting the characteristics of ex-

cellent dairy and beef producers. at the time I was assigned the task of directing the Entrepreneurial Group, and though Ive remained here for the last 21 years, away from cattle breeding per se, I am still working in an industry where we pro-duce drugs, vaccines and hormones for cattle farmers.

How much of what you do is in line with your vocation?Id say that vocation is born within the context of your obligations. your decisions have to be compatible with the fulfillment of your duties. you always have to keep higher objectives in mind, be they obligations to your homeland, the Revolution, the people, or yourself. our work only tries to meet the expectations and trust those around us place in our actions.

Thats how your duty becomes your voca-tion, and in the end, given that your work pleases

you and is in line with your convictions, you do things right. of course, we cannot say that everything weve done is error-free; mistakes are made, and were only humans. Sometimes, even the very desire to do things better has led us down the wrong path.

Cunto de vocacin hay en la actividad que usted realiza?Yo dira que la vocacin se crea cuando existe el compromiso de cumplir, de hacer aquello con lo que uno se ha comprometido. Siempre se debe pensar en objetivos mayores, en compromisos con la patria, con la Revolucin, con uno mismo y con su pue-blo. Por lo tanto, se trabaja para corresponder a las expectativas y a la confianza que los que te rodean depositan en lo que ests haciendo.

Es ah donde la vocacin se convierte en algo obligado, y al final, como haces las cosas con satisfaccin y acorde a tus con-vicciones, entonces las haces bien. No podemos decir que todo lo que hemos hecho est bien, pues se cometen errores y no es-tamos exentos de que se repitan, pues errar es de humanos. En ocasiones el deseo, el inters de hacer algo mucho mejor, nos lle-va incluso a equivocarnos.

Aun cuando sienta aoranza por lo que haca, mi vocacin est ahora en este lugar, donde estn mi obligacin y mi sentido de pertenencia, ese que me hace esforzarme para luchar y traba-jar en pos de obtener mejores resultados. La vocacin no es ms que el cumplimiento del deber.

Cul es la importancia de tener una ganadera eficiente?La ganadera, como toda actividad productiva, tanto indus-trial como agrcola, requiere ser viable, sostenible; para lo cual hay que obtener resultados a travs de las diferentes vas de produccin y sus posibilidades. Exige aprovechar al mximo los recursos, incluyendo los propios recursos vivos, en este caso, el ganado. Ese es un objetivo de constante exigencia, ya que de ello depende lograr una mejor alimentacin para el pueblo y sustituir importaciones.

El sector pecuario ha demostrado que es un rea rentable, pero eso solo se logra sobre la base de aprovechar todo lo que ge-nera. No se debe desperdiciar nada, todo puede ser utilizado, la carne, las pieles, incluso hasta las pezuas se emplean en diferen-tes tipos de producciones. A veces duele ver cmo se pierden los animales, cmo incluso mueren por las restricciones de sacrificio. Esto conlleva a que finalmente no se utilicen por el ser humano.

Cuba cre un potencial gentico en ganado de leche a par-tir de las ideas de Fidel, y un ejemplo de ello fue Ubre Blanca, la muestra ms significativa de esa gentica que se foment en el pas. Los litros de leche que logr Ubre Blanca marcaron rcords. No hay reporte universal que la iguale. Ubre Blanca fue el mayor exponente de esa gentica.

La mayor parte de la ganadera cubana estuvo antes bajo la direccin de empresas estatales. Desde hace unos 15 aos ha ido cambiando su composicin. Hoy est mayoritariamente en ma-nos privadas dentro de un sistema cooperativo donde a veces no se logra que se apliquen los adelantos de la ciencia y la tcnica, las experiencias anteriores y el conocimiento cientfico, incluyen-do la propia gentica como se lograba en el sector estatal. Esa estructura no se puede modificar o cambiar de inmediato, pero es necesario establecer nuevos mecanismos que logren que esa

and work to obtain better results. Vocation is but the fulfillment of your duty.

How important is it to have an efficient cattle industry?Cattle ranching, as every other industrial or agri-cultural production activity, has to be viable and sustainable, which in turn requires obtaining tangi-ble results and capitalizing on the possibilities every

production modality pro-vides. It requires making the best use of every resource, including live resources such as cattle, in this particular case. That is a top-priority objective, as it directly provides food for the population and replaces existing imports.

Cattle ranching can be profitable, no doubt about that, but only if you use every one of its products. nothing can be wasted; everything can be put to some use: beef, leather, even hooves can be taken advantage of. It pains me to see how sometimes animals are lost, how they even die without being put to use, due to slaughtering restrictions. Decisions like those are causing the loss of many head of cattle be-

fore humans have a chance to take advantage of them.

Cuba created a considerable genetic po-tential in the case of dairy cattle, thanks to fidels ideas. one case in point is Ubre Blanca, a brilliant example of the sustained work on the genetics of dairy cattle that took place in our country. The liters of milk produced by Ubre Blanca set records; world records. Ubre Blanca represented the crowning achievement of that program.

for a long time, Cuban herds remained mostly in the hands of state-owned enterprises. This situation started to change some 15 years ago, and these days our cattle are raised mainly by private owners, organized into cooperatives. Unlike large-scale state-owned farms, however, these small organizations sometimes fail to take advantage of technical advancements and existing experiences and scientific knowledge, including

Quien pretenda resolver el cre-cimiento con restricciones en el sacrificio de animales, no va a lograr el desarrollo en este rengln econmico.

Fidel logr incrementar la masa ganadera entre los aos 1959 y 1965. En ese perodo se creci respecto al 59 en un milln de cabezas de ganado, sobre la base de la reproduccin, la introduc-cin de la inseminacin y el desarrollo de la poltica gentica. Despus de esa fecha comienza el decrecimiento de la masa ganadera en Cuba. A causa especficamente de la falta de reproduccin, esa masa se estanc, dej de procrear y comenzaron a disminuir, in-

cluso, los sacrificios. En las vaqueras empezaron a quedarse ani-males improductivos, que competan en el consumo de alimento con los ms jvenes. Esta tendencia dio inicio a un ciclo negativo en el que se detuvo el crecimiento.

Qu influencia podra tener la gentica en el desarrollo de la masa ganadera?El tema gentico no se puede descuidar. No se resuelve solo con tener centros genticos muy buenos, sino que hay que aplicar sus resultados en todos los rebaos para llevar a los animales los beneficios que da la ciencia, y reproducir los caracteres que se

genetics. and while it is impossible to change or reorganize this structure in the short term, it is necessary to provide new mechanisms to guaran-tee that the science, the existing knowledge, that know-how in cattle genetics, are put to use be-fore the work of years is lost.

How would you assess the current situation of the cattle industry in Cuba?It is said that one of the main factors influencing the death rates of our herds is poor nutrition. Increasing the size of our herds is a matter of reproduction, and requires systematic technical work. Whoever hopes to increase head counts by restricting slaughtering is deceiving himself, and will fail inevitably.

fidel achieved a significant growth of our head count between 1959 and 1965. During that period the total number of animals grew by one million, using reproductive programs, artificial insemination and sound genetic policies. The decline of Cuban herds started after that period.

Due to insufficient reproduction, those herds stagnated and stopped procreating; even slaugh-tering started to decrease. our farms began to house unproductive animals, competing with younger ones for available resources. This trend started a negative feedback cycle that cut short the growth of our herds.

Can genetics play a role in developing our livestock?Genetics cannot be neglected. you need good genetic research centers, but you also have to disseminate and apply their results to every herd if science is to make an impact in the propaga-tion of desirable traits. Sometimes you just have to play it loose with breeds, and forget about the idea of the one magical breed that will solve your problem. Crossbreeding is currently regarded as an important tool for obtaining faster-growing animals that are better dairy and beef producers.

Nada se puede descuidar. Hay que tener en cuenta tambin la poltica de los pastos para la alimentacin, la mezcla de gramneas con leguminosas. Hay pases que obtienen altos rendimientos en

la produccin lechera a pesar de tener climas tan fuer-tes como el nuestro. Eso lo

han logrado sustentando su produccin en principios

bsicos como evitar la per-manencia al Sol de los anima-

les por largos perodos de tiempo y garantizando el suministro regular de agua. Estas son dos cuestiones bsicas para el equili-brio del metabolismo.

Cuando estos factores inciden negativamente, condicionan el metabolismo, disminuye el consumo de alimentos y se afec-ta la reproduccin. La sombra es esencial, porque la carga de la energa solar hace que los animales busquen un equilibrio libe-rando calor para disminuir la temperatura del organismo. Cmo lo logran?, dejando de consumir alimentos. Si adems de eso no tienen un suministro estable de agua, ese equilibrio no se logra y comienzan a afectarse el metabolismo y la reproduccin. Para evitar el deterioro total, el animal comienza a regular sus meca-nismos de defensa. Reproducirse en esas condiciones es tener una criatura en el vientre que va a consumir los pocos nutrientes que la madre consume, y entonces el animal limita la reproduc-cin. Es un mecanismo que permite reaccionar en momentos de crisis, es la lucha por la sobrevivencia.

Entonces, adems de la alimentacin, que es bsica para todas las especies para que se manifieste su

potencial, es esencial lograr ese equilibrio. Muchas veces culpa-mos a la alimentacin, pero se trata de un conjunto de elementos que repercuten en el desarrollo de la masa ganadera.

Considero que estamos en tiempos de cambiar, pero desde las concepciones propias de la ganadera, el estado tiene que esta-blecer las reglas de esas transformaciones, emitir las regulaciones necesarias, dado que se trata de un patrimonio del pas. Debemos trabajar en funcin de que no se pierdan los valores creados, esa gentica que se logr en la bsqueda de mayor rendimiento en leche y carne, y adems incrementar la poblacin ganadera.

such as avoiding long stays of the animals under the sun and guaranteeing a steady supply of water. These two factors are fundamental for the metabolic equilibrium of cattle.

failing to secure these factors always has a negative metabolic impact. food intake drops, and so does reproduction. Sheltering against the sun is essential, as excess solar energy leads the animal to seek equilibrium by releasing energy in order to decrease body temperature. and how do they do it? They just stop eating. If, in addition, they dont have a steady supply of water, that equilibrium is never reached, and both metabolism and reproduction suffer the consequences. The animal starts regulating its defense mechanisms to prevent further damage. In these conditions reproduction imposes an additional burden, as the developing embryo com-petes with its mother for already scarce nutrients, and animals therefore limit their reproduc-tion. Its a mechanism triggered during critic situations; part of the struggle for survival.

So, in addition to nutrition, which is essential for realizing the true genetic potential of this and any other species, theres also the question of reaching that equilibrium. We often place the blame on nutrition, but most problems do not have a single origin, being caused instead by sets of factors whose interaction hinders the development of our cattle industry.

In my opinion its time for a change, but from the point of view of cattle raising, its better if setting the rules of such a transformation and issuing the necessary regulations is left to

LABIOFAM has also entered foreign markets. What are the commercial opportunities pur-sued by the Group beyond our borders?our foreign customers are mainly interested in technology transfers, consultancies, and help with the development of production laboratories for veterinarian drugs or vaccines. We work hard to satisfy their requests for collaborations and, logically, to obtain good results.

What strategies are being implemented at LABIOFAM to meet the multiple obligations the Group is currently assuming?We are, first and foremost, producers of veteri-narian drugs and vaccines. That is our main mission. However, we are starting to play a role in the pro-duction of biofertilizers and biopesticides for agri-cultural use, and the fact that we may influence the cattle industry indirectly through its nutrition has not escaped us.

We appreciate the acknowledgement. at the same time, however, we realize this is a considerable challenge, for it demands even harder work and better results. When we were transferred the pro-duction of spirulina, those facilities had remained closed for two years, and right now they are already operating, with exciting prospects ahead. Still, we do not rest on our laurels, and despite the efficiency and results we have achieved there, many things remains to be done. We were also transferred the production of biopesticides and biofertilizers, and all plants and facilities are now working 24/7, storing high-quality products under the conditions to dis-tribute them throughout the country.

The future looks really bright and exciting. our past and present have been complex and difficult, and though today we are talking about cattle breeding and animal health, in the future we may discuss human health issues and signifi-cant scientific achievements in that field. We are developing excellent health products that provide an answer to disorders for which at present there is no satisfying solution, in addition to natural and homeopathic products to improve the patients quality of life. Everything that may improve the life of human beings is becoming a purpose, an objective, in addition to our main mission.

Work is underway with antitumoral recom-binant peptides that could be used as adjuvants to cancer therapy or, in the future, as prophylactic natural compounds administered to families predis-posed to the disease. Lofty expectations are set for the LaBIofam 2012 Congress, where we intend to disclose very interesting results from this research.

Esa es nuestra principal misin. Sin embargo, comenzamos a tener responsabilidad en la produccin de biofertilizantes, bioplaguicidas para la agricultura, y no escapa la posibilidad de incidir en la produccin ganadera a travs de la nutricin.

El Ministerio de Economa nos ha solicitado estimular el desarrollo de alimentos que puedan ser industrializados para sus-tituir importaciones. Aceptamos el reto y estamos tratando de inte-grar a diferentes centros y especialistas que durante muchos aos han investigado sobre esos temas con reconocidos resultados.

Se ha logrado estimular el crecimiento de plantas de alto va-lor nutritivo y biolgico por su composicin proteica, de amino-cidos y minerales, por lo que pueden constituir fuentes de base proteica para el desarrollo de concentrados nacionales e ir dismi-nuyendo, de este modo, las importaciones. Se ha estimulado la produccin de granos, bsicamente de maz, soya, sorgo, etc. Pero tambin insistimos en que cada una de nuestras entidades aplique otras iniciativas, resultados de investigaciones que nos permitan superar los altos niveles de importacin. Estas ltimas, aunque no se realizan en terri-torio nacional, cuentan con capital humano de la institu-cin. Para su elaboracin actualmente se trabaja en China y Argentina.

Todas estas producciones constituyen un eslabn pri-mordial en la salud animal del pas, pues somos el nico laboratorio que garantiza las vacunas bacterianas que de-

manda la ganadera nacional, por lo que no podemos parar para evitar el riesgo de que los animales se enfermen, nos comenta el tambin especialista principal de la produccin de Tuberculina PPD Bovina y Aviar.

Las exportaciones, segn Acosta Dueas, tambin han sido parte de su trabajo. Hemos exportado la vacu-na Leptospira a Espaa, y como medio de diagnstico la Tuberculina Bovina a naciones como Venezuela, Bolivia y Repblica Dominicana.

A VACCINE FOr LEptOspIrA: tHE ONLy sOLutIONDr. naomi Gainza Santos, a 20-year LaBIofam veteran serving as prin-cipal Polyvalent Leptospira Vaccine specialist at the bacterial vaccines group, also joins our conversation.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that has spread worldwide, although warm and rainy tropical climates are especially favorable for disseminating its causative microorganism through the proliferation of its transmission vectors, mainly wildlife animals and, specifically, rodents, explains Dr. Gainza, who started her career in LaBIofam as part of a team that had already been using Soviet technology to produce this vaccine since the eighties.

Dams and rivers often become transmission hubs for leptospirosis. Despite the availability of effective therapeutic options, leptospirosis can

be deadly if not treated early, and therefore vaccination remains as the most efficient intervention for this disease.

In 1992 Cuban technology and indigenous strains were used for the first time to produce the vaccine, a milestone achievement that eventually led to a more efficient product. Preliminary testing of the Cuban vaccine was performed in susceptible species, specifically swine, at sites ex-hibiting high morbidity and mortality from leptospirosis. Logically, the first production batches were devoted to vaccinating our porcine livestock, on account of not only the susceptibility of this species, but the possibility of evaluating the impact of vaccination in high-incidence field conditions thanks to an epizooty spreading, at the time, throughout the Cienfuegos province. as production volumes increased, it became feasible to evaluate

Con 20 aos de experiencia en el Grupo Empresarial LABIOFAM, la doctora Noem Gainza Santos, especialista principal de la vacuna de Leptospira Polivalente del Grupo de Vacunas Bacterianas, se une tambin a este provechoso intercambio.

La leptospirosis es una enfermedad zoontica difundida en el mundo. Climas clidos y tropicales con presencia de lluvias son ms propicios a la diseminacin del mi-croorganismo, lo que favorece la propaga-cin de la enfermedad a travs de animales de vida salvaje, principalmente roedores; nos explica la doctora Gainza, quien co-menz a trabajar en esta empresa junto a otros especialistas que ya venan produ-ciendo esta vacuna desde la dcada del 80, mediante tecnologa sovitica.

Las presas y ros son fuentes fundamen-tales para la transmisin de esta enferme-dad. Su tratamiento a tiempo puede ser efectivo, pero si se implanta de forma agu-da, el ndice de mortalidad aumenta consi-derablemente. El nico control que existe es la vacunacin.

En 1992 se comenz a producir la va-cuna con tecnologa cubana y con cepas autctonas, lo que propici que la efec-tividad y los resultados de inmunizacin aumentaran su aval. Se trabaj en lugares donde haba gran incidencia de morbilidad y mortalidad en especies susceptibles, es-pecialmente en los porcinos. Los primeros lotes se dedicaron a la vacunacin de esta especie por ser la masa ms vulnerable a la enfermedad, y se realiz la prueba de cam-po para evaluar el impacto de la vacuna, principalmente en Cienfuegos, lugar donde haba ms incidencia de esta zoonosis. No

obstante continu aumentando la produc-cin y se comenz a valorar cmo se iba a comportar en bovinos, segunda especie con mayor morbilidad y mortalidad, sobre todo en las recras. Este estudio se realiz con resultados satisfactorios en Camagey, lo que motiv que se realizara la vacuna-cin a todos los bovinos susceptibles.

Las pruebas continuaron aplicndose con gran efectividad en los caninos, con alta demanda de esta vacuna en el pas.

Estos resultados, logrados en las distin-tas especies susceptibles, permitieron con xito la generalizacin en el pas de la vacu-na cubana contra la leptospirosis animal, la

Eventually, efforts behind the development of this vaccine have led to the standardization of its use against animal Leptospirosis throughout Cuba, producing significant savings not only by substituting previously im-ported products, but by providing new exports for the country.

A prOMIsING FuturESandra moreno Reyes, a specialist working with Pedro acosta and the bacterial vaccine production group, commented on the promising long-term plans of the organization, which include a research and development project to improve the vaccines production technology.

Building another production plant is also part of those plans, adds the specialist. It will be dedicated to the production of bio-pesticides for disease-transmitting vectors of public health relevance, and of biopes-ticides and bio-fertilizers used in agriculture, with a projected production scale that should meet the demands of both sectors. on the medium and long term, these actions will contribute to the replacement of chemi-

cal pesticides, providing an alternative with a much lower environmental impact while maintaining productive levels. In addition, the increased pro-duction capacity such a plant provides will enable LaBIofam to export its productions to countries in the region.

Longer-term projections include building two additional plants in the central and eastern provinces of the country, which should lower pro-duction costs for the domestic market, according to moreno. These fa-cilities will comply with existing Good manufacturing Practice and Good Laboratory Practice guidelines, which are followed worldwide for produc-tions involving this type of microorganisms.

Ultimately, it is through the purposeful labor of these hard-working Cuban animal health professionals that the institution meets its ultimate mission: to continue working and researching to increase production levels, develop new products and remain an essential part of the countrys efforts in the control and eradication of diseases that have a significant impact on human and animal health, such as tuberculosis, brucellosis, leptospirosis, malaria and dengue.

Sandra Moreno Reyes, especialista que la-bora junto a Pedro Acosta y al Grupo de Produccin de Vacunas Bacterianas, expre-s lo satisfactorias que son las perspectivas de la Empresa, al encontrarse inmersos en un proyecto de I + D (investigacin y de-sarrollo) para mejorar tecnolgicamente la produccin de vacunas.

La creacin de una nueva fbrica es otro de los elementos que auguran un futuro prometedor, nos comenta la especialista. Su misin principal ser la produccin de bioplaguicidas para el control de vectores en la salud pblica, bioplaguicidas y biofer-tilizantes para la agricultura, y satisfacer las demandas de ambos sectores. Estas acciones contribuirn a me-diano y largo plazo a la sustitucin de productos qumicos, lo que permitir lograr un gran impacto medioambiental y garantizar, con el aumento de las producciones, la exportacin de estos productos a los pases de la regin.

A este futuro promisorio tam-bin se aade la posible construc-cin de dos plantas similares, una en el centro del pas y otra en el oriente. Ello posibilitar abarcar la produccin nacional con me-nos costo, afirma Moreno. Estas fbricas cumplirn con las buenas

prcticas de produccin y de laboratorio, vigentes a nivel mundial para microorga-nismos de este tipo.

En manos de estos especialistas que tra-bajan arduamente por la salud de la masa animal cubana hay un trabajo muy fuerte: seguir investigando y produciendo en aras de incrementar las producciones, desarrollar nuevos productos y continuar siendo un eslabn importante en el control y erradica-cin de enfermedades como tuberculosis, brucelosis, leptospirosis, malaria, dengue y otras de control vectorial, todas con graves implicaciones no solo en animales, sino tambin en seres humanos.

a tuberculosis del ganado vacuno es una de las enfermedades ms importantes de Amrica. Est considerada como una zoonosis con serias con-secuencias para la economa y la salud pblica. Debido a que su existencia constituye un serio factor limitante para el desarrollo de la industria ganade-ra, incluyendo el mercado internacional de animales y de productos de origen animal, y por ser una enfermedad de importancia para la salud pblica, resul-ta esencial que sea controlada y finalmente erradicada.

La prueba tuberculnica es un elemento til para el diagnstico de la tuber-culosis. En medicina veterinaria esta prueba es fundamental, ya que es el m-todo de diagnstico universalmente empleado en los programas de control y erradicacin de la tuberculosis bovina.

Tuberculosis in cattle is one of the most impor-tant diseases in america. It is considered a zoo-nosis with serious consequences for the economy and public health. Because its existence is a se-rious limiting factor for the development of the livestock industry, including the international market of animals and animal products, and for being a disease of public health importance, it is essential that it be controlled and eventually eradicated.

The tuberculin test is a useful tool for diag-nosis of tuberculosis. In veterinary medicine, this test is of paramount importance, since it is the diagnostic method of infection universally used in programs for control and eradication of bovine tuberculosis.



La produccin en Cuba de Tuberculina PPD Bovina comenz en la dcada de los 70, en los Laboratorios de Produccin Veterinaria (CUBAVET), actual Grupo Empresarial LABIOFAM, donde comienzan las primeras experiencias con el objetivo de sustituir el biopreparado de importa-cin por la Tuberculina PPD cubana con la cepa de Mycobacterium bovis AN5. En 1976 se logra introducir de forma extensi-va este producto, luego de ser sometido a ensayos de actividad y especificidad frente al Patrn Internacional de Tuberculina PPD mamfera y un PPD bovino de importacin empleado en el diagnstico con resultados satisfactorios.

Despus del surgimiento en 1987 del Patrn Internacional de Tuberculina PPD Bovina, el doctor Felipe Portuondo y sus colaboradores comienzan en 1995 los pri-meros trabajos para obtener un producto acorde a las exigencias internacionales. A

partir de 2001, el doctor Pedro Acosta y su equipo de trabajo continan desarrollan-do este proyecto de armonizacin de la Tuberculina Bovina, para lo cual se realiza-ron estudios de laboratorio en el Servicio Nacional de Sanidad Animal (SENASA), de Argentina; estudios de campo en el estado de Zulia, en Venezuela, donde se realiz la prueba de sensibilidad del producto; y en la Empresa Pecuaria Valle del Per, de la antigua provincia La Habana, donde se realiz la prueba de especificidad. Despus de ser avalados todos estos estudios por las autoridades correspondientes, se comien-za en 2003 la comercializacin de la nueva Tuberculina cubana.

El producto ha obtenido numerosos re-conocimientos nacionales e internaciona-les, como premios relevantes en los frum municipales de 2005, Mencin Provincial en el ao siguiente y el Premio Provincial de Innovacin Tecnolgica en 2005, entre otros.

Production of Bovine PPD Tuberculin in Cuba began in the 70s in the Veterinary Production Laboratories (CUBaVET), now named LaBIofam, where they began their first experiences with the aim of replacing the import bio-product of PPD Tuberculin by the Cuban PPD Tuberculin with the Mycobacterium bovis an5 strain. In 1976 this product was introduced extensively, after being subjected to tests of activity and specificity compared with the international stan-dard of mammalian PPD Tuberculin and an im-port bovine PPD Tuberculin used in the diagnosis with satisfactory results.

Es un ingeniero industrial traspasando los lmites de su espe-

cialidad para incursionar con vehemencia en los complejos mbitos de la biologa, la veterinaria, la qumica, la farmacutica, un imprescindible e inevitable atrevimiento para quien desde hace cuatro aos dirige una industria dedicada a la produccin de medicamentos inyectables y ora-les empleados en la salud animal.

Pavel Pizart Mijares, director de la Empresa de Productos Inyectables LABIOFAM, se ha propuesto contribuir de manera sostenida, jun-to con su equipo de trabajo, a los proyectos de desarrollo del Grupo Empresarial al que pertenece, y con ese objetivo se involucra en cada uno de los procesos productivos que se ejecutan en su empresa. He is an industrial engineer that refuses to be straightjacketed by his specialty, constantly wandering into biology, veterinary medicine, chemistry or pharmaceutical science. His thirst for knowledge has paid off, however, as his last four years have been spent running a company for the production of oral and injectable veterinary drugs.

Pavel Pizart mijares, director of the LaBIofam Enterprise for Injectable Products, seems bent on leaving his imprint into every development project undertaken by the organization. This young execu-tive and his team have been involved one way or another in each of the companys produc-tions, keeping his motto, running ahead of time, but doing things right alive with the unfaltering dedication of his daily work.

Pharmaceutical industry products follow a development cycle that starts with research and development, continues with regulatory approval or licensing and ends in large-scale production for marketing and distribution.

The importance of these products for animal health and developing the cattle industry in our country provides a big motivation to our techni-cians and specialists, who spare no time searching for new formulations and methods to optimize their production processes. We currently manu-facture 64 different types of drugs in our four production lines, including sera, antibiotics and vitamins, among other medicine types.

Hoy son 64 los tipos de frmacos que logramos fabri-car, a partir de cuatro lneas de produccin dedicadas a sueros, antibiticos y vitaminas, entre otros medicamentos.

Cules son los principales proyectos que desarrolla la empresa?Es estratgico incentivar investigaciones que nos permitan multiplicar la cantidad de medicamentos que hoy ofertamos. Estamos obligados a adecuarnos a las exigencias del mercado in-terno y evitar que se importen productos que nuestra industria es capaz de proveer con iguales estndares de calidad que los productos farmacu-ticos que hoy se ofertan en el mercado internacional.

Tenemos en ejecucin tres proyectos de investigacin, dos en vas de registro e incorporamos cinco nuevos. Para la elabo-racin de los productos hemos utilizado principios activos muy semejantes a los que propone la Farmacopea, y que adems son sugeridos por institutos de investiga-cin y universidades del pas que tambin trabajan en estas reas de investigacin.

tives overlap with ours, and have also collaborated and made use of research results from other insti-tutions lacking the necessary facilities to take product development to its final stage. This is an alliance, a step towards integration for the benefit of animal health in our country.

How do you cope with the demand for these medicines among producers?So far, 2012 has gone off to a smooth start, as ac-tual production volumes have exceeded our plans. If we sustain this rate, our development milestones will no doubt be met. The production volumes tar-geted for the present year must generate value be-

yond 50 million pesos, and our warehouses have already stockpiled the necessary raw materials and containers to achieve this goal.

The sustained growth of our institution during the last years has brought us closer to the ob-jective of entering foreign markets, a goal that depends on the previous fulfillment of over 300 contracts we currently have with Cuban coopera-tives and state enterprises.

Cmo logran garantizar la demanda que tienen estos medi-camentos en el sector productivo?El comienzo de 2012 ha sido muy favorable al registrarse so-brecumplimientos. Si mantenemos este ritmo sostenido de produccin, nuestras aspiraciones de continuar creciendo po-drn verse materializadas. En el presente ao programamos producciones que deben generar valores por encima de los 50 millones de pesos. Para cumplir esta cifra ya tenemos en nues-tros almacenes toda la materia prima necesaria y los envases garantizados.

Este desarrollo paulatino de los ltimos aos nos sita en fa-vorables perspectivas para cumplir nuestro inters de, una vez cumplidos los ms de 300 contratos que hoy tenemos con coo-

perativistas y entidades estatales, buscar mercados forneos a los productos que genera la empresa.

n cambio de escenario en el que nuevas exigencias, la multiplicidad de frmacos que se deben elaborar y el cum-plimiento de compromisos vitales de produccin, de los cuales dependen parte de los estndares de salud animal en Cuba, no amilanan a Griselda Mena, una licenciada en Farmacia que desde hace poco tiempo se incorpor como directora en la Empresa de Produccin de Vacunas Virales y Bacterianas que pertenece al Grupo Empresarial LABIOFAM. Sin embargo, ella posee la expe-riencia de 25 aos por haber estado vinculada a varios proyectos de la referida institucin cientfica.

Llegada de Vietnam, pas donde durante cuatro aos dirigi Bio Vietnam Ltd. Co., nica fbrica de Biorat de LABIOFAM en el exterior, ahora asume su nueva responsabilidad conociendo los retos que esta implica. Aqu son numerosas las producciones en cuanto a variedad y cantidad. Tenemos que estar en constante alerta para que no falle ningn eslabn que nos impida cumplir con los planes. Comenzamos muy bien el presente ao con so-brecumplimientos que repercuten favorablemente no solo en nuestra primordial obligacin de velar por la salud de la ganade-ra cubana, sino adems en los ndices econmicos de la fbrica. Nuestro aporte en este 2012 est previsto que ascienda a unos 42 millones de pesos, una cifra que lograremos cumplir con el esfuerzo de todo el colectivo de especialistas, tcnicos y obreros de nuestra empresa y hacia ese objetivo encaminamos todos los das nuestras jornadas de trabajo.

En estos laboratorios, investigacin y produccin van de la mano, y para ello cuentan con una fuerza laboral en la que los universitarios y tcnicos forman la mayor parte.

vaCUnas vs virUsLa aparicin del virus de la fiebre porcina africana, enfermedad que provoc una disminucin ostensible de esa especie en Cuba, ha sido una constante para la produccin a escala industrial de una vacuna que protegiera contra una enfermedad que manifies-ta elevados niveles de contagio y morbilidad.

Las largas jornadas dedicadas a las investigaciones fueron pre-miadas. Este resultado se sobredimensiona cuando influye deci-sivamente en la alimentacin de la poblacin, y por tanto en la economa del pas.

En estos laboratorios refiere Daro Paneque, un mdico ve-terinario que desde hace ms de 20 aos trabaja en LABIOFAM la bsqueda de soluciones o alternativas a problemas de salud animal es una constante. a change of scenario in which new require-ments, multiple drugs in development and ful-filling of key production commitments, from which part of animal health standards in Cuba depend, did not daunt Griselda mena, a licen-tiate in Pharmacy, who recently was appointed as Director of the Company of Viral and Bacterial Vaccines Production, belonging to the LaBIofam Entrepreneurial Group. However, she has the knowledge of 25 years involved in several projects of that scientific institution.

Coming from Vietnam, a country where for four years led Bio Co. Ltd. Vietnam, the only pro-duction facility of LaBIofam abroad for Biorat, now she assumes his new responsibility to know the challenges imposed by this mission. There are many productions in variety and quantity. We must be constantly alert to avoid any link fails to prevent us from complying with the plans. We started very well this year surpassing the plans, which affect favorably not only our primary obliga-tion to ensure the health of the Cuban livestock, but also in the economic indices of the production facility. our contribution in 2012 is expected to rise to 42 million pesos, a figure that will achieve compliance with the collective effort of all the specialists and workers of our company; and to-ward that goal are moving every day our working hours.

VACCINEs Vs VIrusThe malicious introduction of the hog african fe-ver, a disease that caused a considerable reduc-tion of such specimens in Cuba during the 70s, marked the beginning of the studies for industrial scale production of a vaccine to protect against a disease that produces high levels of infection.

The long hours devoted to the investigations were rewarded with a formulation that even today after 30 years has prevented the occurrence of a single outbreak of the disease in our country. This result is oversized especially when influences deci-sively the feeding of the population and therefore the economy of the country.

In these laboratories refers Dario Paneque, a veterinarian who works since more than 20 years in LaBIofam the search for solutions or alternatives to animal health problems is a constant. We produce monthly 800 000 doses of hog cholera vaccine, covering the entire state and private sector. after weaning, each animal is vaccinated, while the breeding animals are immu-nized every 6 to 8 months, with the guarantee of being this a highly reliable product.

A pesar de los esfuerzos de numerosos pases y organis-mos internacionales, lejos est el da en el que se hagan visibles las posibilidades reales de erradicar la malaria. Esta enfermedad que no reconoce fronteras se ha extendido por el mundo, y jun-to a ella, los elevados ndices de fallecimiento por su causa, sobre todo de nios y mujeres embarazadas. Las estrategias que se han implementado en aras de poder cumplir con una de las metas del milenio de la Organizacin de Naciones Unidas eliminar la malaria poco han permitido avanzar en tan humana aspiracin.

Es en el continente africano donde esta dolencia alcanza sus ms alarmantes secuelas. All los pases pertenecientes a la Comunidad Econmica de frica Occidental (ECOWAS), re-presentantes de los programas nacionales de malaria, el Grupo Empresarial LABIOFAM y distintos grupos sociales, celebran sistemticamente encuentros tcnicos sobre el control de esta enfermedad.
