Luke 2:8-14
"And in that region, there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, 'Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!'"
At the birth of a child, most parents make numerous telephone calls to relatives and friends to tell them about the wonderful news. In addition to telephone calls, announcement cards are often sent. When Jesus was born, there were no telephones or mail service. However, God had a better method of announcing the birth of his Son. He used his angels.
God, in his sovereignty, did not choose the rulers of the time nor the wealthy to be among those who were the first to hear of Jesus' birth. Interestingly, he chose a group of people who, in many ways, were considered outcasts. Upon hearing the good news of the Christ child, the shepherds went to Bethlehem to see Jesus in the manger.
After seeing Jesus, the shepherds went out and spread the word concerning what had been told to them. God used these people to be his ambassadors. The people who heard the shepherds talk about Jesus were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
Like the shepherds, we are called to be faithful witnesses of Jesus and his love. Once we begin to comprehend his love for us, we are compelled to share that love with others. In telling others, we reflect our gratitude for his love, grace, and mercy. God hears and sees our gratitude through the way we live our lives.
Rev. Scott A. Sager
The Lectionary recommends passages of scripture for each Sunday of the year. We will not read all of these in worship, but they are provided for your individual study and reflection for the week. We encourage you to read the lessons the week prior to Sunday service.

The Camel Had Wandered
Our family has always enjoyed a Christmas tradition of setting out a ceramic nativity scene--complete with wise men, camels, shepherds, sheep, and of course, Mary,
Joseph, and Baby Jesus. Each season the nativity scene was the same.
One year when my children were young, I
carefully unwrapped each piece and set up an artistic display representing the first
Christmas. The children gathered around to watch. We talked about the birth of Jesus and the visit of the shepherds and Magi. I
then cautioned the children, as always, not to touch the pieces, explaining that they
were fragile and easily broken.
This year, however, the temptation was too great for my two-year old daughter,
Elizabeth. The day we set up the nativity scene, I noticed several times, with some
irritation, that a camel had wandered from its appointed place or a sheep had strayed from the watchful care of the shepherd.
Each time, I returned the piece to its rightful place, and then tracked down the culprit and admonished her to leave things
alone.
The next morning, Elizabeth awoke and went downstairs before I did. When I
walked into the living room I noticed right away that the manger scene had been disturbed again. All the pieces were
clumped together in a mass, as tightly as they could be fitted together.
Impatiently, I stepped forward to put things right; but I stopped short as I realized that
some thought had gone into this new arrangement. All twenty-three figures were grouped in a circle, facing inward, pushed together as if to get the best view possible of the figure resting in the center of them
all—the Baby Jesus.
The spirit touched my soul as I pondered the insight of a two-year old. Certainly,
Christ should be the center of our holiday celebrations. If we all could draw in’ around our Savior—not only during the
Christmas season but during each day—what a better perspective we would have. The
love He offers to each of us would be easily shared with others who have not ventured
so close.
I left the nativity arranged according to Elizabeth’s design that year. It served as a poignant reminder during the rest of the
season of what Christmas is all about.

MANY THANKS TO OUR MEMBERS God has blessed us with a very generous church
family. We have helped many others with these
recent offerings.
Neighbors In Need: We contributed $110. for this
UCC offering which addresses issues of justice and
compassion in the USA.

a seminary student pursue their goal of becoming a

a total of 33 cleanup buckets. In addition, we were
able to send a check for $673.46 to help fill the
enormous needs due to hurricane destruction this
fall.
CROP Walk: We had 7 walker packets handed out
this year and collected $955.00 to help combat
hunger and provide clean water in the USA and
overseas. 25% of funds will be used locally. Thank
you for our walkers and contributors for this cause.
Can of Green Beans: Although there isn’t an exact
count, we well exceeded our goal of 500 cans of
green beans to be added to the New Hope’s clients
Thanksgiving dinners.
Operation Christmas Child / Shoebox Donations:
We packed a total of 48 shoeboxes for children
overseas and sent a check for $528.00 for shipping

CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS EXPRESS 2017 New Hope Ministries NHM is looking for volunteers to help make Christmas a little brighter through the Christmas Blessings Express event to be held December 12 & 13 this year. There are many volunteer opportunities to prepare for this; such as, pre-event sorting, stocking, gift wrapping, personal shopper assistance, car loading. Much work is done from now through the first week of Dec. when all items are sorted and boxed to be ready to be set up for the event. On Dec. 11, the setup in the pantry area begins and requires many hands (and feet) to carry all the items from upstairs storage to the Pantry area. Dec. 12 and 13 require many volunteers to help the clients do their personal shopping. This is a wonderful opportunity to share a few hours of your time to bring the joy of the holiday season to our local community. If you have questions or would like to join the Wissler’s for sorting and working on the days of the event, please contact Jim and Karen Wissler at 717-698-3282. New Hope Ministries website will have a sign-up sheet for Volunteers for the upcoming Christmas Blessings Express (Hanover) Event.
MEDICAL SUPPLY CLOSET
We are looking for additional members to assist with our Medical Supply Closet Committee. This ministry is vital to both members of our church family as well as the community at large. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. We are also looking for anyone who is “handy” with making minor repairs. From time to time we get items
that could use screws tightened, bolts replaced, or some small repairs are needed to our
hospital beds. Please contact Doug Bradley at 443-744-3114 if you are “handy” and would
like to help. Thank you!
BOWLING LEAGUE
Sign up for the St. David’s bowling league has
begun and will start Sunday, January 7, 2018. The
signup sheet will be posted on the bulletin board in
the overflow room or you may contact Pastor Scott
at 717-880-6082. The league is open to all who want
to participate and have fun with a great bunch of
people. The league bowls Sunday nights at 6pm at
South Hanover Bowling Center, beginning January
7th. The cost is $9.00. This includes 3 games of
bowling plus shoes. January 7th will be the fun bowl.
The league play will begin on January 14th. The
length of the season depends on the number of teams
we have. If you want to bowl but don't have enough
people to make a team, then I will put you on a team
that needs more players. So, come on out and join
the fun! We will take a break from bowling during
Lent and resume and conclude the season after
Easter.
BABY BLESSING
Over the last few years, we have observed the season
of Epiphany in a very special way. When Jesus was a
newborn, his parents, Joseph and Mary, dedicated the
Christ child at the Temple in Jerusalem. Therefore, we
also have a special segment in our worship service to
dedicate our newborns to God. Of course, parents do
dedicate their children to God during the sacrament of
baptism. But in this service, we take an extra moment
to celebrate God’s gift to us of these children. We
thank God for the blessing of their lives. And, we
remember the importance of parents and a faith
community in raising up children who might also be a
blessing to others. This is a special invitation to you, as
parents who had a child in 2017, to bring your child to
the 8:45 a.m. or the 11:15 am worship service on
Sunday, January 14, 2018 at St. David’s for this
special blessing
