The Reality 2 Samuel 8:14-15 ..the Lord

made David victorious wherever he went. [15] So David reigned over all Israel and did what was just and right for all his people.

Psalms 33:16-17 The best-equipped army cannot save a king, nor is great strength enough to save a warrior. [17] Don't count on your warhorse to give you victory- for all its strength, it cannot save you.

Psalms 20:7-8 Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God. [8] Those nations will fall down and collapse, but we will rise up and stand firm.

• But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. 2 Cor. 2:14

Desiring What God Desires2 Samuel 9:1

One day David asked, “Is anyone in Saul’s family still alive—anyone to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

[9:2] He summoned a man named Ziba, who had been one of Saul’s servants. “Are you Ziba?” the king asked. “Yes sir, I am,” Ziba replied. [3] The king then asked him, “Is anyone still alive from Saul’s family? If so, I want to show God’s kindness to them.”

ChesedNot just kindness, but God’s

kindness

Translated: Love, lovingkindness, mercy, kindness

Ps. 103:17 From everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear himPsalms 25:6-7 Remember, O Lord, your

compassion and unfailing love, which you have shown from long ages past. Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth. Remember me in the light of your unfailing love, for you are merciful, O Lord.

Psalms 51:1 Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Psalms 86:5 O Lord, you are so good, so ready to

forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.

Psalms 130:7 O Israel, hope in the Lord; for with the Lord there is unfailing love. His redemption overflows.

Psalms 31:7 I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul.

Psalms 86:15 But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.

Psalms 145:8 The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

[9:3] The king then asked him, “Is anyone still alive from Saul’s family? If so, I want to show God’s kindness to them.”

Ziba replied, “Yes, one of Jonathan’s sons is still alive. He is crippled in both feet.” “Where is he?” the king asked. “In Lo-debar,” Ziba told him…

• 2 Samuel 4:4 (Saul’s son Jonathan had a son named Mephibosheth, who was crippled as a child. He was five years old when the report came from Jezreel that Saul and Jonathan had been killed in battle. When the child’s nurse heard the news, she picked him up and fled. But as she hurried away, she dropped him, and he became crippled.)

2 Sam. 9:5-6 So David sent for him and brought him from Makir’s home. When he came to David, he bowed low to the ground in deep respect.

Desiring What God Desires2 Samuel 9:7 “Don’t be afraid!” David said. “I intend to show kindness to you because of my promise to your father, Jonathan. I will give you all the property that once belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will eat here with me at the king’s table!”

2 Samuel 9:8 Mephibosheth bowed respectfully and exclaimed, “Who is your servant, that you should show such kindness to a dead dog like me?”

2 Samuel 9:10 You and your sons and servants are to farm the land for him to produce food for your master’s household. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, will eat here at my table.”

2 Samuel 9:11 “Yes, my lord the king; I am your servant, and I will do all that you have commanded.” And from that time on, Mephibosheth ate regularly at David’s table, like one of the king’s own sons.

2 Samuel 9:13 And Mephibosheth, who was crippled in both feet, lived in Jerusalem and ate regularly at the king’s table.

Grace (Chesed)Characterizes God

It’s not his only character trait

But one of the most important

The only way to come to God

Eph. 2:8,9 For by grace you have been rescued through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Life-Changing!

1Jn 4:7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1Jn 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins
