• EduNova “Study and Stay” project to attract and retain international students to stay, work and live in Nova Scotia after graduation involving NSCC and all 10 universities in NS expanded in 2018 to all four Atlantic provinces

2016 Atlantic Growth Strategy — International goals:

• Immigration: Atlantic Immigration Pilot — an increase of 2,000 applications for 2017, including a stream for international student graduates

INTERNATIONAL LEARNINGPROGRAMS

• 120 students and 16 faculty participated in projects and exchanges in 10 countries (110 students and 15 faculty in 2016/17)

• $35,000 in student bursaries for participants in International Learning Programs ($25,000 in 2016/17) — $20,000 from NSCC International externally funded projects and $15,000 from the NSCC Foundation

• New i-Cent app and enhanced online D2L pre-departure course and pre-departure conference for student and faculty participants

• NSCC led an expanded Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) project for students from Atlantic Canada to participate in the Doing Business in Europe and Global Health & Quantified Self Summer Programs at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands

• 3 new international learning programs for students and faculty in 2018

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROJECTS

• 55 externally funded international assignments for NSCC employees (47 in 2016-2017)

• 2 Leave for Change (Uniterra) international assignments for NSCC employees (Peru and Vietnam)

• 69 visiting faculty and staff on training programs, workshops and study tours at NSCC including the International Education Leadership workshop offered at NSCC for over 30 NSCC international and Canadian partner representatives prior to the CBIE conference in Halifax in November 2017

• Funding to support faculty participation to lead international learning programs and identify new opportunities for students

• Funding for International Learning Program bursaries for students

• 6 international “spin-off” projects created for NSCC students and faculty in Grenada and Tanzania

IMMIGRANT AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EXPERIENCE

• 360 International Students at NSCC (225 in 2016-2017)

• i-Graduate International Student Barometer 2017 results: NSCC best in the world in 10 categories including teaching, employability, and learning support

• 20 incoming exchange students at NSCC campuses from Europe, the Caribbean and South America

• Expanded International Student Ambassador Program with more ambassadors and more campuses

• 2nd World University Services Canada (WUSC) Student Refugee Program participant (from Sudan)

• International student participation rates doubled from 2016/17 in social activities, events and workshops

• 25 NSCC employees participated in the annual “Working with International Students” course, which is taught by international education experts from across Canada. Over 160 employees have participated in the workshop to date.

• Enhanced iCent app for international students giving them instant access to information and resources

• Enhanced Writing Centre led Library Services at the Institute of Technology, Akerley and Ivany campuses and English as an additional language data analysis report and recommendations

• 100 % employment rate in Nova Scotia for NSCC’s first cohort for the Edunova Study and Stay in Nova Scotia program, designed to link students to career opportunities to stay in Nova Scotia after graduation

AWARDSNSCC International team members Zoran Kondali and Kellie McMullin were awarded the 2017 Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) President’s Award for excellence in international education at the CBIE Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The award cited their innovative work leveraging NSCC’s international technical assistance projects to create international experiential learning projects for students and faculty, contributing to NSCC’s commitment to learning abroad in academic, service, and community engagement.

At the CBIE conference in 2017 the City of Halifax presented NSCC International Director Katie Orr with the Halifax Ambassador Award for helping to bring the CBIE conference to Halifax.

In April 2018 NSCC President Don Bureaux and NSCC International Director Katie Orr were presented with the Colleges and Institutes Canada Silver Award in Internationalization Excellence. NSCC’s internationalization accomplishments were recognized across four categories:

• student and faculty participation,

• integration of international students,

• institutional partnerships,

• curriculum and programs.

In May 2018 NSCC Screen Arts grad Erica Meus-Saunders was a finalist for the GoAbroad.com innovative student video for her short film entitled “journey of feet” about her NSCC international experience in Tanzania.

IMPACT AWARDSIn 2017 NSCC International introduced International Impact Awards and an International Learning Summit to recognize student and employee impact on internationalization at NSCC.
