Whether you are thinking about studying at NSCC or have already enrolled at a college or university, it makes sense to learn how you can maximize your education by applying your diploma or degree to new programs.

Today, many university students continue on to college, and college students continue on to university – both provide distinct advantages for graduates entering the workforce and throughout their career. As a student, you want options that best suit your interests and career needs, and build on the learning from your hard-earned credits and degrees. At NSCC we can help.

Investing in post-secondary education is a big commitment of time and money – but it is a must have in today’s labour market.

Page 4: NSCC Articulation Guide

GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR DEGREE OR DIPLOMA

Transfer agreements NSCC has established numerous special arrangements (called articulation

agreements) with post-secondary institutions in Canada and the US. Through

these cooperative agreements, NSCC graduates gain advanced standing in a

variety of university programs and vice versa.

One of the most popular options is the Two + Two Agreements – where a two-

year NSCC Diploma is recognized as the equivalent of two years of a four-year

university degree. By studying two years at NSCC and two years at university,

you can complete a diploma and a degree in just four years.

Quality education in your communityNSCC has campuses throughout Nova Scotia, so more students can access

post-secondary education closer to home. We offer more than 100 quality

programs combining classroom learning with on-the-job training so that you

can fully explore your education and career path. And with lower tuition costs,

NSCC can make a college/university combination a cost-effective choice for

many Nova Scotia families.

GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR DEGREE OR DIPLOMA

Respected and in-demand careersOur quality education is highly respected in the workforce – 91% of NSCC

graduates are employed most within their fields of study and earning good

salaries. With results like these, a growing number of university students come

to NSCC to get the career-ready skills and practical experience they need for

the jobs they want.

In fact, nearly half of NSCC students in 2007 had some university or college

education. For graduates with university degrees and college diplomas, NSCC

offers a range of Advanced Diplomas that provide advanced and applied

learning in specialized fields of study, better preparing you for the marketplace.

Find out how you can benefitThis booklet outlines the agreements in place with universities in Canada

and the United States that will provide you with advanced standing in many

university and college programs. This is intended to provide you with an

overview; however, for the most up-to-date information, please consult the

NSCC website: nscc.ca.

Mount Saint Vincent University, Class of 2009

Bachelor of Business Administration

Temple Young attended NSCC 16 years ago and had such a good experience she decided

to come back again. In 2007, she graduated from the Business Administration program and is

now enrolled in the BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) program at Mount Saint Vincent

University (MSVU) as an Accounting major and working toward a CMA designation.

Temple credits NSCC for igniting a passion for learning. She earned top marks at NSCC and

numerous academic awards. By far her biggest accomplishment was winning the Canadian

Millennium National Excellence Scholarship. It funded her second year at NSCC and is now

paying her way through her first year of university. “I’m proud of myself and of what the College

has brought out in me – a passion for learning, compassion for others, and the confidence to

make my own opportunities in life,” Temple says.

“The College allowed me to dream a bigger dream for myself. It provided me with an amazing foundation to build on.”

SCHOOL OF TRADES & TECHNOLOGY

Cannon Janes is proof positive that when you find something you love to do, there are no limits to what you can achieve.

Cannon does not describe himself as a model student growing up. When Cannon graduated from high school, he had no idea what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. After working and studying for a few years, at the age of 23, Cannon decided to check out NSCC. He chose to study Mechanical Engineering Technology and never looked back. “I knew from the first week, I had found my niche,” says Cannon. “I loved it.”

Mechanical Engineering Technology is a very challenging program but it was one in which Cannon excelled. After NSCC, Cannon joined the Air Force and went on to Lakehead University where he completed his Engineering degree in two and a half years. Today, Cannon is a Captain in the 423 Maritime Helicopter Squadron. He leads a team of almost 200 people responsible for the maintenance of all operational Seakings on the East Coast of Canada. He has traveled all over Canada and has flown in or at the controls of a multitude of aircraft including CH146 Griffons, CC130 Hercules, CT142 Dash 8s, CH124 Seakings and even broken the sound barrier in CF188 Hornets. “NSCC and the military provided me with great opportunities,” says Cannon.

“The sky is the limit.”

Tristan Goulden NSCC – Annapolis Valley Campus – Class of 2001

Geomatics Engineering Technician Diploma

University of New Brunswick – Class of 2005

Geomatics Engineering Degree

Tristan Goulden came to NSCC directly from high school and in a few short years managed to

earn both a college diploma and a university degree in the exciting world of Geomatics Engineering.

After completing his diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technician, Tristan moved on to university

to pursue a degree in Geomatics Engineering. He was given credit for his studies at NSCC’s

Centre of Geographic Science (COGS) and managed to complete what would normally be a

5-year university program in just four years flat.

Tristan, who grew up in Wolfville, is grateful for the doors his NSCC Geomatics Engineering

Technician Diploma opened for him. “You get a lot more practical experience with the College

than you would at university, where it’s more theoretical.” Tristan says the fact that he could prove

he had a certain set of skills also helped him get summer jobs and obtain work in the United

States. “It really helps when you have a piece of paper to show somebody.” The Mediterranean,

Western Canada, and Texas are just some of the places Tristan has already worked. He enjoys

the travel that comes with his work, but research is his love and he’s now working on his Masters.

“NSCC has opened up a world of opportunity for me.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS AN ARTICULATION AGREEMENT?Some programs and institutions have specific arrangements in place to assist students in pursuing multiple diplomas and degrees. Articulation is a formal agreement between two or more institutions that allows specific programs at one institution to be credited towards direct entry or advanced standing at another. These arrangements are often referred to as articulation agreements. If a student is in a program with such an agreement, they may easily enter into an articulated program at another institution to further their studies. NSCC has prioritized the pursuit of articulation agreements with a number of post-secondary institutions because we value and respect learning and want to make sure that the learning outcomes achieved at our institution become portable educational building blocks to the future. For example, credit for our Practical Nursing program can be awarded towards Nursing degree programs at Nova Scotia universities. These institutions have already determined the subjects for which they will give advanced standing, as well as any other specific requirements such as grade point average.

We are also pleased to help our adult learners through a partnership agreement between NSCC and the NS Department of Education. This agreement affords students the ability to obtain the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults. The Adult Learning Program is for those students who are 19 years of age or older, have been out of public school for one full year or more, and do not already have a Department of Education recognized high school graduation diploma. This program offers a flexible, negotiated paced learning environment which both challenges and supports adult learners as they work toward improving their employability, gaining entrance into post-secondary programs, learning new skills and improving their existing abilities.

19

Page 21: NSCC Articulation Guide

WHAT ARE TRANSFER CREDITS?A transfer credit is one that is granted by an institution based upon previous successful study that has been undertaken at another institution. Students who have completed a program of study at NSCC will be able to transfer credits earned here towards advanced standing in an articulated program at another institution. Students who have successfully completed credits at another post-secondary institution may in turn apply for transfer credit at NSCC. Students must officially apply to have their credits recognized and, if successful, they will appear on the student transcript as “CR”.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE ARTICULATION PROCESS?There are huge benefits to be realized through the articulation process. Not only will students save money on tuition, student fees and textbooks, they will be able to cut down on the duplication of learning by transferring credits already obtained. This speeds up the academic process and moves them that much closer to career readiness.

HOW DO I ENSURE I MAKE THE MOST OF ARTICULATION AND TRANSFER CREDITS?The best way for students to make great career and educational decisions is to engage in some pre-planning. Discussing post-secondary options with a guidance counselor or career transition specialist will ensure that students are knowledgeable about their learning options and are aware of those college programs that are associated with university degree completion opportunities.

If you are already a student at NSCC and are thinking of entering an articulated program at another institution after graduation, make sure you contact the institution you are planning to attend early in your program at NSCC. In order to take full advantage of an articulation agreement, you may need advice from the receiving institution regarding things such as concentration and/or elective selection.
