The restorative approach rests with the belief that people make positive changes when those in positions of authority do things WITH them rather than TO or FOR them. It focusses on behaviours and interactions which help build and sustain positive relationships. The restorative approach was introduced within Children’s Social Care in Trafford in 2018; since then over 75% of colleagues have attended a 3 day training course. This has led to changes in practice including the use of team check-ins, problem solving circles and a new way of chairing Child Protection conferences (which includes changes to the physical environment where these meetings are held). The approach can also be used in supervisions with staff. There are restorative ambassadors who help champion and support the approach within teams. According to the social discipline window (left) it is about providing a balance of HIGH SUPPORT alongside HIGH CHALLENGE. There are a number of tools and techniques used but ultimately it’s about how we use language, perspective and collaboration in our relationships with the people we work alongside.

In social care this includes the families we work with but also our fellow professionals.

Further 3 day training course dates in 2020 will be announced soon. For more information please contact: h&[email protected]

For our multi-agency partners places for a one day course are available. Bookings are being taken via Trafford Strategic Safeguarding Partnership.

Alongside training, mentoring sessions are also

running; providing an opportunity to discuss and

ask questions about the approach.

We’ll also be looking at policies and procedures and how these can best

support the use of the approach in practice.

RESTORATIVE

PRACTICE

to achieve for now and in the future.

These will be our guiding principles and will underpin every decision we make going forward, affecting all areas of our service. They will be a constant reminder of what we want

1. Right children looked after

2. Children living at home are safe

3. The right support for our families

Our Obsessions

The restorative approach was introduced within Children’s Social Care in Trafford in 2018; since then over 75% of colleagues have attended a 3 day training course.

This has led to changes in practice including the use of team check-ins, problem solving circles and a new way of chairing Child Protection conferences (which includes changes to the physical environment where these meetings are held). The approach can also be used in supervisions with staff.

There are restorative ambassadors who help champion and support the approach within teams. Through ‘Train the Trainer’ courses we now have colleagues qualified to deliver the training.

What is Restorative Practice?

The restorative approach rests with the belief that people make positive changes when those in positions of authority do things WITH them rather than TO or FOR them. It focusses on behaviours and interactions which help build and sustain positive relationships.
