Dear Research Medical Center Family,

Fall is almost here and what a welcome change it will be to feel some cooler weather!

Speaking of hot – our stroke team delivered exceptional care again recently when they achieved a 29-minute door-to-needle time with Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Eppler in the lead. This ties our record for the fastest time from patient arrival in our ER to delivering clot-busting t-PA. This patient is doing very well.

It was great to read recently in a Bates County Memorial Hospital community newsletter about our amazing stroke care. A patient presented to the ER at BCMH with stroke symptoms and within minutes

the physician was consulting with our physicians using telemedicine and our telestroke program. Diagnosis was made and t-PA was administered; soon thereafter the patient was on her way to Research Medical Center for further treatment. The advances we are achieving in stroke care began with the incredible dedication of Dr. Ahmed more than 10 years ago. All the professionals who work with him every day are outstanding caregivers.

In addition to stroke outreach, we are looking to enhance regional patient access to our perinatal and obstetric services. The plan is to add physician coverage and access points for high risk obstetric care. I’ll share more in the near future as we celebrate the grand reopening of our remodeled and expanded Midwest Women’s Healthcare locations on the Research campus and in the northland.

As another way to connect with our surrounding communities, Research Medical Center is developing a Community Advisory Board. This will be a group of business leaders, community advocates, and patients who volunteer to serve and agree to meet one time each quarter to share information. We’ll ask one physician and department leader to share briefly about a new service or innovative technology at each gathering and then we’ll take the opportunity to listen. The goal here is to create another forum to listen to our community and share the great work that’s happening here.

Research Medical Center Expands its Business Development Team

Jamie Robinson, MSN, RN, CEN, has been selected as the only MidAmerica Division representative to enter the Emergency Department Director Development Program. Modeled after our organization’s other leadership development programs, this prepares up-and-coming leaders to be successful as Emergency Department Directors. This is another example of how HCA is investing in developing future leaders of healthcare.

During her time at Research Medical Center she has successfully partnered with Dr. Bjerke to increase our trauma volume, reduce our trauma diversion, and develop many strategic relationships with EMS and other partners such as the VA. She has also been the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Research Medical Center and Research Psychiatric Center since 2013.

Jamie Robinson Accepted into the Emergency Department Director Development Program

Shannon Griggs and Nancy Sucher recently joined the Research Medical Center team as Directors of Business Development. They are responsible for working with physicians and internal teams to positively impact referral processes and enhance the patient experience. They work in a myriad of ways to give physi-cians voice through the issue resolution process and by proactively working with them to develop and grow new services. They also help connect specialists physicians with each other and with Research Medi-cal Center’s service lines.

Shannon focuses strictly on surgical services. She comes to us with over 20 years of Business Development and Project Management experience. Previously, she worked as the Business Development Director at Lee’s Summit Medical Center. Shannon received her Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Business Logistics from the University of Missouri and is

in the process or earning her Masters of Hospital Services Administration at the University of Kansas.

Nancy is a high-impact medical sales leader with extensive sales experience. She comes to us from HCA in Houston, TX, where she was the Director of Business Development in the Ambulatory Surgery Centers. Prior to that she worked in pharmaceutical and medical sales. Nancy received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration at Lindenwood College in St. Louis, MO.

Todd DePaepe, BSN, was appointed the new Nurse Manager of Adult Services at Research Psychiatric Center. The Adult Inpatient Unit is our largest, and arguably, most challenging unit. The acuity of the patients seems to have escalated, over the past few years, demanding that we, as a treatment team, continually hone our skills and responsiveness. Todd brings many years of experience to the role and a unique level of understanding of Trauma Informed Care (TIC). As we roll out TIC to our staff, it will be invaluable to have a leader who has successfully done so in other settings. Todd possesses firsthand knowledge of the provision of inpatient psychiatric care as both a line staff and a leader. He began his career as a mental health technician and was promoted through the years into ever greater leadership roles, obtaining his BSN along the way.

Megan Kelly, RN, came to Research Psychiatric Center on June 2nd as the Unit Manager for the Geriatric Psychiatric Unit. Megan has lived in Kansas City the majority of her life and began her nursing career at the Research Brookside campus when it was known as Baptist Medical Center. She has a unique and varied background which includes working in psychiatry, neurology, rehabilitation, and most recently she has been a Director of Nursing in Long Term Care. As the manager of the unit her plan is simple: communication within her nursing staff with the physicians to provide optimal care for the geriatric population in need of services. She also feels very strongly on good and open communication with the family members. Megan says, “There is nothing worse than not knowing what is happening to a family member and not able to get answers.” Although she credits her years in working on the medical side of things for her vast scope of knowledge, she says that she feels she has come back full-circle into psychiatry as she describes this arena as her “roots.”

Last month, Juan Carlos Correa, MD, a fellowship-trained vascular surgeon began seeing patients at Research Medical Center. Dr. Correa recently finished his vascular surgery fellowship at Saint Louis University, where he also served as chief general surgery resident. He has a broad background in medical academia and clinical practice, including rotations in transplant surgery, topical burn research and serving as a college professor. Dr. Correa earned his medical degree at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador in Quito, Ecuador.

Brian Mieczkowski, DO, MSc, a fellowship-trained pulmonary and critical care specialist, recently joined RMC. He earned his medical degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also earned a Master of Medical Science from Ohio State University where he had the opportunity to focus on medi-cal research and academic medicine. He has lead medical research projects, written abstracts, delivered multiple academic and CME lectures. Dr. Mieczkowski has special interest in diagnosing and caring for patients with sleep apnea and pulmonary disease.

As a reminder, creating and using a consistent email signature across our organization is a great way to consistently and professionally market the health system. However, if used incorrectly, an email signature can add unnecessary size and length to an email. Please follow these rules when setting up and using your email signature:• The email signature should be used when communicating to someone outside of our health system. When communicating to someone inside our organization, be thoughtful when you include the full signature. • You should only use an email signature on original emails or during your first response. If there is an ongoing email chain, it is unnecessary to include your email signature at every response. Replies and forwards should only include your name and preferred contact method.• Do not include backgrounds on your emails as these take up space and can be hard to read.• Do not add personal messages or favorite quotes to your signature. Part of building our brand involves adopting the same mission and messaging. Adding personal messages can dilute and add confusion.


Research Medical Center Opens New TIA Clinic with Diagnostic and Treatment Services in One Location

Led by internationally recognized TIA expert Iftekhar Ahmed, MD, the TIA Clinic is another community healthcare resource to help in the prevention of stroke, the country’s fourth leading cause of death.

Research Medical Center’s TIA Clinic is dedicated to offering quality care to patients who may be at risk for a stroke, focusing on secondary prevention of stroke after a TIA. Stroke is the #1 cause of adult disability and the #3 cause of death. The TIA Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 7:30am - 6:00pm. Patient appointments will be within 24-72 hours of primary care physician notification.

All components of medical work-up are completed in one day, usually over a 6-8 hour period and can include the following: • Neurological examination and consult by a cerebrovascular neurologist • MRI/MRA • Echocardiogram • Blood pressure monitoring • CT Angiography • Laboratory studies • EKG • Counseling by a nutritionist and social worker if needed • Extensive stroke prevention education Research Medical Center, the first Certified Primary Stroke Center in the region, was recently awarded the Triple Crown in Stroke Care by the American Heart Association and has received Get With the Guidelines™ - Stroke Gold Plus recognition from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association for five consecutive years. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

Did You Know Research Medical Center is Recycling Styrofoam & Clear Plastic Wrap?

If your department generates any White Packaging Styrofoam (i.e. coolers, packaging inserts, packing peanuts) or Clear Thin Plastic Wrap (shrink wrap, bubble wrap, plastic bags, clean trash liners), please bring them down to the “B” Level Supply Chain Storage Area and place these items in the Large Cardboard Boxes provided that are located near the cardboard baler unit. Since we implemented this Phase II Recycle Program in August 2013, Research Medical Center has recycled 11,464 lbs (5.7 tons) of Styrofoam & Clear Thin Plastic Wrap! To give you a perspective, that’s more weight than what one full-grown adult elephant weighs! Please do your part and continue to keep recyclable items such as these out of the landfill.

The Imaging department is a full-service department providing diagnostic services for clinicians seeking information on their patients. At Research Medical Center and the Brookside Campus, mammography, diagnostic (X-Rays), CT, and Ultrasound are offered. MRI, Nuclear Medicine/PET and Angiography, also known as Interventional Radiology are also offered at the Research Medical Center’s main campus. We also do interventional procedures – biopsies, drainages, Chemo-embolizations, tube placements, myelograms are a very few examples.

CARE Behaviors – in all areas, staff realizes that the tests we do are routine to us – as they are all skilled technologists but they realize that to our patients, the tests and procedures they may have are foreign and often worrisome. Staff excel at putting the patients concerns at ease. They accomplish this by providing each patient a full explanation of what the test entails, what the patient needs to do, how long the procedure will take and of course, after the procedure, what the patient will need to do if indicated by the testing done.

A Closer Look at Depression

After the death of Robin Williams shook the world, KCTV5 interviewed Royals announcer, Ryan Lefebvre who suffers from depression and Research Psychiatric Center’s David Strother, LMSW, Unit Coordinator for the S.T.A.R. Program, to take a closer look at the disease. What people need to know is that anyone can and many people do suffer from depression. Some symptoms to look out for are hopelessness, helplessness, appetite loss, fatigue and physical pain. Depression is a real medical condition that requires real medical intervention. Excellent Emergency Healthcare Transforms Lives -- Research Medical Center’s First Video News Release

Research Medical Center’s Trauma Services rallied 20 departments to save baby Aiden. Aiden’s mother was in a car accident last December and after being ejected from her vehicle, she sustained major injuries including massive head trauma, a broken pelvis and collarbone and lacerated spleen and liver. She was about 15 weeks pregnant with Aiden at the time.

American Medical Response (AMR) paramedics were called to the site of the accident site as the first responders where they stabilized her and transported her to where LifeFlight Eagle could fly her to Research Medical Center. Once here she underwent a full trauma workup. Neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and high-risk obstetrics were immediately consulted.

Dr. Scott can be seen on KSHB41 and Dr. Scott can be seen on FOX4 news where they are interviewed on the miraculous birth that took a hospital-wide, multidisciplinary health team to accomplish. KCTV5 and KMBC9 also covered

the story. All coverage include interviews with the grandmother, Michelle King with baby Aiden in tow and AMR paramedic, Danny Hall.

Now 16 weeks old, Aiden is considered a miracle by the Research Medical Center team of physicians and nurses who tended to him in utero for almost four months, until his momentous birth in April.

“Aiden’s story is not only a medical miracle, it also underscores the strong collaborative efforts between our medical teams and EMS personnel,” says Jackie DeSouza, Chief Executive Officer of Research Medical Center. “It takes a village to deliver high-quality healthcare to all of our patients, regardless of their illness or injury, and I am so proud of the outstanding and compassionate life-saving emergency care Amie and Aiden received on the front line and in the NICU at Research Medical Center.”

Research Psychiatric Center Offers SeparatePartial Hospitalization Program for Adolescents

The Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program is now separate from the Adolescent Inpatient Unit. The program is available from 8:30am-3:30pm and offers Group Psychotherapy, Family Sessions and Individual Psychotherapy. Each patient will see Christopher Vanhorn, DO, our Adolescent Psychiatrist daily. There are also five psychotherapy groups led by Kali Keilbey, MS, PLPC. Group topics include: Grief and Loss, Stress Management, Relaxation, Mindfulness, Creative Therapy, Depression management, Self-esteem enhancement, Emotional Regulation, Coping Strategies and Anger Management. Patients attend Recreational/Occupational Therapy group once a day.

The program is a great option for those who urgently need daily treatment without the 24-hour care. The program is also a nice transition from acute inpatient care to home. We offer safe, structured treatment without much disruption to family and daily life. The program is designed to assist in restoring individuals to their highest level of functioning, help cultivate the skills necessary to maintain that level of functioning, and to help them live more satisfying and productive lives.

Common disorders treated are mood disorders, anxiety disorders, chronic suicidal ideation, personality disorders or issues pertaining to family/interpersonal conflicts. The therapies used include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Family Systems.

Tightwad, MO EMS Team Seeks Council From Research Medical Center

Trauma experts from Research Medical Center and LifeFlight Eagle were invited to Tightwad, MO recently to help debrief paramedics after they had responded to a horrifying accident involving four young men. Two did not survive and one patient was brought by helicopter to Research Medical Center for trauma care.


Research Medical Center will be using the DMAIC improvement model instead of the current PDCA.

Why the change from PDCA model to DMAIC?• DMAIC (an abbreviation for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) is an effective method for improving, optimizing and stabilizing processes. • The focus of the model is to reduce variation in processes. • DMAIC is primarily used when an established process is not working. Examples of using DMAIC successfully in the healthcare organizations include reducing medical error, reducing falls, achieving compliance and meeting regulatory requirements and improving HCAHPS scores.

Research Medical Center will begin education on how to effectively use the DMAIC model at department meetings beginning this month.

Employee Health Schedules Flu Clinic DatesThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend an annual flu vaccine as the first and best way to protect against influenza. Get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine becomes available. This will help to ensure protection before the flu season begins. It takes about two weeks after the vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection. The influenza vaccine provides protection throughout the flu season. Remember, you will not be at higher risk for contracting influenza in March or April if you receive the vaccine as early as September.

Healthy Habits UpdateSuperfood for September – AppleS!An apple a day won’t keep the doctor away, but they can be a step in the right direction. Apples are an excellent source of fiber and antioxidants. They make a delicious addition to salads, desserts; and complement pork or turkey as a main entrée. Check out the nutrition station outside the cafeteria to learn more about the health promoting nutrients in apples, and be on the lookout for September’s pro-motional items throughout the cafeteria. Clinical Excellence UpdateAnnual Competency FairIf you have not yet attended the Competency Fair in 2014, it is mandatory for all nursing, radiology, respiratory, and transport staff hired before December 31st, 2013, to attend on the final date, September 17th, 2014.

School of Radiologic Technology Accepting Applicants Now

Did you know that Research Medical Center has a School of Radiologic Technology located right here within the hospital? Their mission is to provide a quality educational program that promotes excellence in Radiologic Technology and produces competent, professional, and compassionate radiographers for the healthcare community. Graduates will obtain the knowledge required of an entry-level radiographer and be prepared to successfully sit for the ARRT examination. The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Research Golf Classic a SuccessThe Research Foundation hosted its 25th Annual Research Golf Classic on Monday, August 18 at Milburn Country Club. The event raised more than $68,000 for The Research Foundation’s ThinkFirst Injury Prevention program. ThinkFirst reaches more than 40,000 students in the Greater Kansas City Area annually, teaching them how to prevent traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Cynthia Randazzo, President & CEO of The Research Foundation said, “The 25th Annual Research Golf Classic was a tremendous success. Following a fireworks start, walk along a one-mile route carrying illuminated lanterns – white for patients and survivors, red for supporters and gold for teams walking in memory of a loved one.
